About the Item

Vitraux in Four Sheets, Puzzle of Life, 1974, by Salvador Dali (1904-1989) Lithograph on paper 52 ¼ x 55 ½ inches unframed (132.715 x 140.97 cm) 53 ½ x 56 ½ inches framed (135.255 x 143.51 cm) Signed on bottom right and on center right 125/250, edition of 250 Description: Salvador Dali was a Spanish Surrealist artist whose reputation as an innovator and artistic revolutionary has made him a key artist whose influence is still felt today. His provocative and unique demeanor formed his artwork along with Cubist, psychoanalytic, and metaphysical influences. He is best known for his warped depictions of reality, which he created through his invention of the Paranoiac Critical Method, allowing Dali to tap into his own subconscious to discover dreams and “unreality.” In this piece titled "Vitraux in Four Sheets Puzzle of Life", Salvador Dalí Depicts two serpents across four panels of paper. The piece is reminiscent of stained glass work with "vitraux" literally translating to stained glass in French. The four panels are arranged in a two by two rectangle. All panels are equivalent height however the left two panels are wider than the right two. The composition depicts two surreal serpents; One yellow and the other blue. The yellow serpent is smooth, has a fish-like tail. dragonfly-like wings, two legs, a bald blue human-like head, and protruding tongue. On its head, it has one closed eye with accentuated eyelashes and an open shelf drawer takes the place of the other eye. The blue serpent is very scaly, has two heads, one on either end of its body and two legs. Both heads are humanoid. The head on the left is white, bald, has a long curled orange mustache and an open drawer in place of its eyes. The head on the right is yellow, has long curly blond hair, a hooked nose, a long protruding tongue with saliva dripping off the end, and also has an open drawer in place of its eyes.

Cat
By Léonard Tsugouharu Foujita
Located in New York, NY
Tsuguharu Foujita (also known as Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita) was born in Tokyo, Japan, on November 27, 1886, to an upper-class family. From an early age, Tsuguharu learned French and had ambitions to be a successful artist in Europe. In 1913 he moved to Paris, where he spent the majority of his life and cultivated an artistic circle that included Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Amedeo Modigliani in the creative and bustling Montparnasse district. Tsuguharu Foujita thrived in Paris early on, selling out his debut solo exhibition of 110 pieces on the first day. In Paris, he became known for hosting luxurious parties with his creative friends and models, who served as his muses. The extravagant lifestyle caught up with him when he was faced with a bill he could not pay and had to leave Paris. After a brief return to Tokyo at the start of World War II, Foujita traveled to the United States before eventually moving back to Paris for good. He became a French citizen in 1955 and even converted to Catholicism with the baptismal name of Léonard in 1959. Tsuguharu Foujita’s love of cats was clearly apparent from his vast collection of cat drawings and prints. He loved that they could be both wild and domestic. But it wasn’t just Foujita who had a passion for cats. Cats are a symbol in Japanese art and culture of good luck and fortune. It’s no surprise that Foujita is just one of many Japanese cat portrait artists throughout history. Due in part to the desirability of Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita cat...
