Cubist Prints and Multiples

CUBIST STYLE

Inspired by the nontraditional ways Postimpressionists like Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat depicted the world, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque pioneered an even more abstract style in which reality was fragmented into flat, geometric forms. Cubism majorly influenced 20th-century Western art as it radically broke with the adherence to composition and linear perspectives that dated back to the Renaissance. Its watershed moments are considered Picasso’s 1907 Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, in which nude figures are fractured into angular shapes, and Georges Braque’s 1908 painting show, which prompted a critic to describe his visual reductions as “cubes.”

Although Cubism was a revolutionary art movement for European culture, it was informed by African masks and other tribal art. Its artists, which included Fernand Léger, Alexander Archipenko, Marcel Duchamp, Juan Gris and Jean Metzinger, experimented with compressing space and playing with the tension between solid and void forms in their work. While their subjects were often conventional, such as still lifes, nudes and landscapes, they were distorted without any illusion of realism.

Cubist art evolved through different distinct phases. In Analytic Cubism, from 1908 to 1912, figures or objects were “analyzed” into pieces that were reassembled in paintings and sculptures, as if presenting the same subject matter from many perspectives at once. The palette was usually monochromatic and muted, giving attention to the overlapping planes. Synthetic Cubism, dating from 1912 to 1914, moved to brighter colors and a further flattening of images. This unmooring from formal ideas of art would shape numerous styles that followed, from Dada to Surrealism.

Pablo Picasso, 6.12.57., from The Fall of Icarus, 1972 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite heliogravure after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled 6.12.57, originates from the rare 1972 folio Pablo Picasso, La Chute d'Icare (The Fall of Icarus), Decoration du Foyer des Delegues Palais de l'UNESCO a Paris, Suite d'etudes preparatoires en noir et en couleurs realisees du 6 Decembre 1957 au 29 Janvier 1958. Published by Editions d'art Albert Skira, Geneve, under the direction of Albert Skira, Editeur, Geneve, and printed by Atar Roto Presse S.A., Geneve, this edition presents a series of preparatory studies—both monochrome and color—created by Picasso for his monumental mural commissioned for the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. This composition, dated December 6, 1957, marks one of the earliest studies for the project, capturing Picasso’s first explorations of form, rhythm, and mythological energy that would evolve into his iconic La Chute d’Icare (The Fall of Icarus) mural. Executed on velin paper, this heliogravure measures 11.4 x 15.4 inches (28.96 x 39.12 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized 1972 publication format. This edition, produced under Albert Skira's supervision, preserves the tonal precision, gestural vitality, and compositional experimentation of Picasso’s 1957 preparatory works for one of his most significant public commissions. Published by Editions d'art Albert Skira, Geneve. Printed in Switzerland." About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose revolutionary vision redefined modern art in the 20th century. Born in Malaga, Spain, he demonstrated prodigious talent from an early age and trained in Barcelona and Madrid before moving to Paris, where he became the epicenter of avant-garde innovation. Picasso pioneered Cubism alongside Georges Braque, explored emotional depth through his Blue and Rose periods, and continually reinvented his style across thousands of works in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking. His influence spans movements from Surrealism to abstraction, and his work remains central to global art history. The highest price ever paid for one of his artworks is approximately US $179.4 million for Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) (1955). Pablo Picasso heliogravure...

Pablo Picasso, Two Heads of Women, from Ovid's Metamorphoses, 1970 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Deux tetes de femme (Two Heads of Women), originates from the rare 1970 folio Suite des reproductions des Eaux-fortes de Pablo Picasso pour illustrer les Metamorphoses d'Ovide. Published and printed by Production Edito-Service S.A., Le Grand-Saconnex, Canton of Geneve, in collaboration with Albert Skira, Geneve, this edition presents faithful reproductions of the original etchings created by Picasso in 1930–31 for the landmark illustrated book Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide. The composition exemplifies Picasso’s neoclassical grace and psychological depth, depicting two female profiles rendered with refined linework and sculptural simplicity inspired by antiquity. Executed on velin papier Verge fin blanc des papeteries de Bellerive, this lithograph measures 11.02 x 8.66 inches (28 x 22 cm) with an image size of 4.3 x 5.5 inches (10.9 x 14 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized 1970 publication format. This edition, produced under Albert Skira’s supervision, preserves the tonal clarity and linear precision of the original copper etchings created by Picasso for the 1931 deluxe edition of Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, one of the most celebrated artist’s books of the 20th century. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision and restless creativity reshaped the trajectory of modern art. Born in Málaga, Spain, Picasso demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age, studying at the Royal Academy of San Fernando before settling in Paris, the artistic epicenter of the early 20th century. There, his pioneering spirit gave rise to groundbreaking movements, most notably Cubism, developed alongside Georges Braque, which revolutionized visual representation by deconstructing form and perspective. Over his prolific seven-decade career, Picasso’s work evolved through distinct stylistic periods—the Blue, Rose, African, and Classical phases—culminating in a body of art that embraced experimentation, emotional depth, and innovation. His influence and dialogue with fellow visionaries Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray shaped the foundation of modernism, while his legacy continues to resonate through the work of post-war and contemporary artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. Together, these artists collectively expanded the boundaries of art in the 20th and 21st centuries. Picasso’s staggering output of more than 20,000 works—spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and printmaking—embodies his belief that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” His creations are housed in the world’s foremost museums, including the Musée Picasso in Paris, MoMA in New York, the Guggenheim, and the Tate in London. The highest price ever paid for a Picasso artwork is approximately $179.4 million USD at Christie’s New York in 2015 for Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955). About the Publication: Grabados al linoleo (Linocuts), published in 1962 by Gustavo Gili, S.A., Barcelona, and Editions Cercle d'Art, Paris, stands as one of the most celebrated printed albums devoted to Picassos linoleum engravings. Supervised and printed by Verlag Gerd Hatje, Stuttgart, the album documents Picassos innovative mastery of the linocut technique—an approach he developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s while working closely with the printer Hidalgo Arnera in Vallauris. These works, created between 1958 and 1961, demonstrate Picassos ability to synthesize color, form, and movement within a single, reductive process that demanded precision and intuition. The album was issued in a limited numbered edition of DXX examples, accompanied by the publisher’s acknowledgment of Galerie Louise Leiris for facilitating access to the original blocks. As a historical publication, Grabados al linoleo reflects Picassos late-career vitality and his relentless experimentation with materials and printmaking methods, offering collectors and scholars an enduring testament to his inventive genius in graphic art. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision revolutionized modern art and defined the visual language of the 20th century. A child prodigy from Malaga, Spain, Picassos career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed an astonishing range of styles and innovations—from the melancholic Blue and romantic Rose periods to his pioneering invention of Cubism with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional notions of perspective and form. Influenced by the bold expressiveness of El Greco, the structure of Cezanne, and the vitality of African and Iberian sculpture, Picasso became a central figure of the Paris avant-garde, working in creative dialogue with contemporaries such as Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His insatiable experimentation extended across painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, forever expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. A master of reinvention, Picasso profoundly shaped generations of artists who followed—from Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jeff Koons and Banksy—cementing his status as a timeless cultural icon whose works remain among the most sought after worldwide. His landmark painting Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) achieved a record-breaking sale of 179,365,000 USD at Christie's, New York, on May 11, 2015, affirming Picassos enduring legacy as one of the most influential and valuable artists in history.
