Cubist Prints and Multiples

CUBIST STYLE

Inspired by the nontraditional ways Postimpressionists like Paul Cézanne and Georges Seurat depicted the world, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque pioneered an even more abstract style in which reality was fragmented into flat, geometric forms. Cubism majorly influenced 20th-century Western art as it radically broke with the adherence to composition and linear perspectives that dated back to the Renaissance. Its watershed moments are considered Picasso’s 1907 Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, in which nude figures are fractured into angular shapes, and Georges Braque’s 1908 painting show, which prompted a critic to describe his visual reductions as “cubes.”

Although Cubism was a revolutionary art movement for European culture, it was informed by African masks and other tribal art. Its artists, which included Fernand Léger, Alexander Archipenko, Marcel Duchamp, Juan Gris and Jean Metzinger, experimented with compressing space and playing with the tension between solid and void forms in their work. While their subjects were often conventional, such as still lifes, nudes and landscapes, they were distorted without any illusion of realism.

Cubist art evolved through different distinct phases. In Analytic Cubism, from 1908 to 1912, figures or objects were “analyzed” into pieces that were reassembled in paintings and sculptures, as if presenting the same subject matter from many perspectives at once. The palette was usually monochromatic and muted, giving attention to the overlapping planes. Synthetic Cubism, dating from 1912 to 1914, moved to brighter colors and a further flattening of images. This unmooring from formal ideas of art would shape numerous styles that followed, from Dada to Surrealism.

Pablo Picasso, Seated Woman and Horse, from Ovid's Metamorphoses, 1970 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Femme assise et cheval (Seated Woman and Horse), originates from the rare 1970 folio Suite des reproductions des Eaux-fortes de Pablo Picasso pour illustrer les Metamorphoses d'Ovide. Published and printed by Production Edito-Service S.A., Le Grand-Saconnex, Canton of Geneve, in collaboration with Albert Skira, Geneve, this edition presents faithful reproductions of the original etchings created by Picasso in 1930–31 for the landmark illustrated book Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide. The composition reveals Picasso’s classical elegance and mythological imagination, juxtaposing human and animal forms in a scene that embodies transformation and harmony central to Ovid’s narrative. Executed on velin papier Verge fin blanc des papeteries de Bellerive, this lithograph measures 11.02 x 8.66 inches (28 x 22 cm) with an image size of 4.3 x 5.5 inches (10.9 x 14 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized 1970 publication format. This edition, produced under Albert Skira’s supervision, preserves the precision, tonal delicacy, and lyrical balance of the original copper etchings created by Picasso for the 1931 deluxe edition of Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, one of the most celebrated artist’s books of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: After Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Title: Femme assise et cheval (Seated Woman and Horse), from Suite des reproductions des Eaux-fortes de Pablo Picasso pour illustrer les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, 1970 Medium: Lithograph on velin papier Verge fin blanc des papeteries de Bellerive Dimensions: Paper size 11.02 x 8.66 inches (28 x 22 cm); Image size 4.3 x 5.5 inches (10.9 x 14 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1970 (after the 1931 etchings) Publisher: Production Edito-Service S.A., Le Grand-Saconnex, Canton of Geneve Printer: Production Edito-Service S.A., in collaboration with Albert Skira, Geneve Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1970 folio Suite des reproductions des Eaux-fortes de Pablo Picasso pour illustrer les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, authorized by Albert Skira, Geneve Notes: Excerpted from the 1970 folio (translated from French): "The original edition of Les Metamorphoses d'Ovide, full text of the association, Guillaume Bude, established and translated by Georges Lafaye, is illustrated with XXX original etchings by Picasso. The draw, completed on October 25, 1931, in Paris, on the presses of Leon Pichon for typography, and by Louis Fort for the engravings, was limited to CXLV examples, all numbered in the press and signed by the artist. The edition included XXX examples on Japon blanc a la forme fabrique specialement par la manufacture imperiale, including V examples, numbered from I to V, each containing a sequel on Japon with remarks in bistre, a suite on Chine with remarks in black and an original drawing by the artist; XXV examples, numbered from VI to XXX, each containing a sequel on Japon with remarks in black; XCV examples, numbered from XXXI to CXXV, on verge de pur chiffon fabrique specialement a la main par les papeteries d'Arches; and CX non-commerce examples, numbered in Roman numerals from I to XX, reserved for the artist and collaborators. The coppers used to draw the illustrations were scratched by the artist in the presence of the publisher. This album has been presented to collectors and bibliophiles of the United States of America by Marie Harriman. This lithograph edition, 22 x 28 cm, was printed with Albert Skira's authorization on papier Verge fin blanc des papeteries de Bellerive." About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision and restless creativity reshaped the trajectory of modern art. Born in Málaga, Spain, Picasso demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age, studying at the Royal Academy of San Fernando before settling in Paris, the artistic epicenter of the early 20th century. There, his pioneering spirit gave rise to groundbreaking movements, most notably Cubism, developed alongside Georges Braque, which revolutionized visual representation by deconstructing form and perspective. Over his prolific seven-decade career, Picasso’s work evolved through distinct stylistic periods—the Blue, Rose, African, and Classical phases—culminating in a body of art that embraced experimentation, emotional depth, and innovation. His influence and dialogue with fellow visionaries Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray shaped the foundation of modernism, while his legacy continues to resonate through the work of post-war and contemporary artists such as Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. Together, these artists collectively expanded the boundaries of art in the 20th and 21st centuries. Picasso’s staggering output of more than 20,000 works—spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and printmaking—embodies his belief that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” His creations are housed in the world’s foremost museums, including the Musée Picasso in Paris, MoMA in New York, the Guggenheim, and the Tate in London. The highest price ever paid for a Picasso artwork is approximately $179.4 million USD at Christie’s New York in 2015 for Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955). Pablo Picasso, The Flies, from Verve, Revue Artistique, 1951
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite lithograph by Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Les Mouches (The Flies), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. VII, No. 25–26, originates from the 1951 issue published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris, and printed by Draeger freres, Maitres-Imprimeurs, Paris, October 25, 1951. This remarkable composition exemplifies Picasso’s dynamic postwar period in Vallauris, where he explored themes of mythology, vitality, and the human spirit through bold forms and radiant color. Les Mouches reflects Picasso’s fascination with symbolism and everyday life, transforming a simple subject into a poetic expression of rhythm, humor, and artistic freedom. Executed as a lithograph on velin du Marais paper, this work measures 14 x 10.5 inches. Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of the Draeger freres atelier, renowned for its collaborations with the leading modernists of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Title: Les Mouches (The Flies), from Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. VII, No. 25–26, 1951 Medium: Lithograph on velin du Marais paper Dimensions: 14 x 10.5 inches Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered as issued Date: 1951 Publisher: Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, under the direction of Teriade, Editeur, Paris Printer: Draeger freres, Maitres-Imprimeurs, Paris Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire, Vol. VII, No. 25–26, published by Editions de la revue Verve, Paris, 1951 Notes: Excerpted from the album (translated from French), This issue of Verve is entirely devoted to Picasso’s recent works (peintures, sculptures et ceramiques) made in Vallauris between 1949 and 1951. The cover and the frontispiece were specially composed by the artist for this work which was completed to print on the presses of the Maitres-Imprimeurs, Draeger freres on October 25, 1951. About the Publication: Verve, Revue Artistique et Litteraire was one of the most influential art periodicals of the 20th century, founded in Paris in 1937 by the visionary Greek-born publisher Teriade (Stratis Eleftheriades). Conceived as a synthesis of art and literature, Verve brought together the greatest modern artists and writers of its time—Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Joan Miro, Fernand Leger, and others—alongside poets and philosophers such as Paul Eluard, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Each issue was a work of art in itself, luxuriously printed by master lithographers such as Mourlot Freres and produced in collaboration with leading typographers and designers. Verve became a platform for avant-garde creativity, publishing original lithographs and essays that reflected the evolving spirit of modernism. Matisse collaborated closely with Teriade from the magazine’s inception, producing some of its most iconic issues, including those devoted to his paper cut-outs. The final Verve issue of 1958, which featured La Tristesse du Roi and the Nu Bleu series, stands as a testament to Matisse’s enduring genius and to the publication’s legacy as the definitive meeting of art, poetry, and printing craftsmanship in 20th-century France. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision revolutionized modern art and defined the visual language of the 20th century. A child prodigy from Malaga, Spain, Picasso’s career spanned more than seven decades and encompassed an astonishing range of styles and innovations—from the melancholic Blue and romantic Rose periods to his pioneering invention of Cubism with Georges Braque, which shattered conventional notions of perspective and form. Influenced by the bold expressiveness of El Greco, the structure of Cezanne, and the vitality of African and Iberian sculpture, Picasso became a central figure of the Paris avant-garde, working in creative dialogue with contemporaries such as Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. His insatiable experimentation extended across painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, forever expanding the boundaries of artistic expression. A master of reinvention, Picasso profoundly shaped generations of artists who followed—from Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Jeff Koons and Banksy—cementing his status as a timeless cultural icon whose works remain among the most sought after worldwide. His landmark painting Les Femmes d’Alger (Version “O”) achieved a record-breaking sale of $179,365,000 at Christie’s, New York, on May 11, 2015, affirming Picasso’s enduring legacy as one of the most influential and valuable artists in history. About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose extraordinary vision and restless creativity reshaped the trajectory of modern art. Born in Malaga, Spain, Picasso demonstrated exceptional talent from an early age, studying at the Royal Academy of San Fernando before settling in Paris, the artistic epicenter of the early 20th century. Picasso’s staggering output of more than 20,000 works—spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and printmaking—embodies his belief that “art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” His creations are housed in the world’s foremost museums, including the Musee Picasso in Paris, MoMA in New York, the Guggenheim, and the Tate in London. The highest price ever paid for a Picasso artwork is approximately $179.4 million USD at Christie’s New York in 2015 for Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) (1955).
