About

Ceramic vessel, glaze, sculpture, abstract art Trio measurements: Small gourd: 17 3/4" x 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" Medium gourd: 20.5" x 5.25" x 5.25" Large gourd: 24 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" Known as ‘ Nature’s Pottery,' gourds have been fashioned into utilitarian wares since the Neolithic age. Archeological sites have uncovered gourds as far back as 7BCE in the form of cups, storage containers, and instruments. It is thought that some of the earliest pottery unearthed was shaped to resemble gourds because of their practicality. Over the centuries ceramic ‘gourd’ vessels have evolved and morphed into various designs in numerous cultures. Michael Boroniec's "Collections; Gourd Vessels," series are works stemming from this long tradition of the gourd as inspiration. The works are wheel thrown with a localized clay body found in Berkshire County, MA, and finished in a second firing with a smooth satin black glaze giving it the feel of compressed carbon. The forms become purely sculptural objects as the extreme long neck removes any utilitarian purpose. These vessels are the second iteration of Boroniec's Gourd series, first exhibited at the Fuller Craft Museum in Massachusetts (2006). Michael Boroniec (b. 1983) is a sculptor and designer who resides and creates in Berkshire County, MA. Graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2006, Boroniec has shown in numerous museums and galleries throughout the United States in both group and solo exhibitions. Intrigued by creating art at a young age, Boroniec took to ceramics as a means of communication expressing that earth is of the oldest material known to man. His sculptures link the historical implications of clay with contemporary fine art. ceramic, vase, vessel, abstract, design, handcrafted, pottery, clay, glaze, sculpture, abstract sculpture, minimalism, design, decor, black, monochrome, gourd
