Haring united the appeal of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists such as Jean DuBuffet as he developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic that comprised energetic, boldly outlined figures against solid or patterned backdrops. His major themes included exploitation, subjugation, drug abuse, and the threat of nuclear holocaust; Haring boldly engaged with social issues, especially after receiving an AIDS diagnosis in 1987. Provenance: Private Collection Bella Feldman is an American sculptor whose work addresses the themes of sexuality, war, and the persistent anxiety of the industrial age. Feldman is known for pioneering the use of glass with steel. Her work has affinities with Surrealism, Post-Minimalism, and the Feminist art movement, although she has no formal affiliation with these. A Professor Emeritus at the California College of the Arts, Feldman lives and works in Oakland, CA and London, England. Bella Feldman was born in 1930 in New York City to a family of working-class Jewish immigrants from Poland. She grew up in the Bronx tenements. Feldman attended The High School of Music & Art in Manhattan during World War II. Students were required to visit museums and galleries as part of the curriculum. When Feldman was thirteen, she visited her first art museum, the Museum of Modern Art. There, she saw Meret Oppenheim’s Object (1936), the fur-lined cup and saucer, and was struck by her strong psychological response to this work. Other early influences included Alberto Giacometti’s The Palace at 4 a.m. (1932) and the sculpture of David Smith. One of Feldman’s earliest sculptures Warrior (1952) pays tribute to Giacometti. During the Holocaust, Feldman lost numerous family members who remained in Poland, an experience that helped shape her worldview. This includes her life-long preoccupation with war, and the overwhelming effects of the military-industrial complex. Feldman received a BA from Queens College, City University of New York. She married Leonard Feldman at age 18, and moved to California with him in 1951 where they both accepted teaching positions. Feldman has two children, Nina Feldman, born 1954 and Ethan Feldman, born 1956. In 1965, Feldman started teaching at the California College of the Arts. In 1971 she and her family moved to Uganda, East Africa on a grant from the E. L. Cabot Trust Fund at Harvard University. Feldman spent two years teaching art in Uganda prior to the genocidal war in that country. Upon her return to CCA, she faced gender discrimination and a threat to her job. Her successful fight to retain her position prompted her to later become an advocate for other women faculty, who she helped to achieve equity and job security. Randy Shull is an artist who works fluidly between a variety of mediums, including furniture design, spatial design, painting, and landscape design. He is highly acclaimed for his rich and sensual use of color and space. Awarded a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship in 1994, an NEA Southern Arts Federation grant in 1995, and a master residency at Oregon School of Arts & Crafts in Portland, Randy has also had four solo shows in New York in the past decade. His work is included in a number of important museum collections including The Brooklyn Museum; The High Museum in Atlanta; The Renwick Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft & Design in Charlotte; Racine Museum of Art; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design, and Museum of Art and Design in New York. Randy stays involved in the local community by serving on the board of the Asheville Art Museum. Randy maintains studios in Asheville, NC and Merida, Mexico. In 2008 and 2009 Randy’s work was the subject of a twenty-year retrospective that opened on January 24th at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State, and traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Craft & Design as well as The Bellview Art Museum and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Reviews of the exhibition can be found in the Raleigh News and Observer and the San Francisco Chronicle. The craft revival in the 1920s brought a renewed interest in traditional native crafts and folk art at places like the John C. Campbell Folk School and Penland School of Crafts. Using pocket knives, carvers transformed scraps of wood into dolls and toys for their children. As tourism developed, carving became an important source of income, and successful carving centers developed in Cherokee, Asheville, Tryon and Brasstown. Seaborn Bradley was known for making war clubs, tomahawks and walking sticks; Will West Long and his son Allen made masks used in native celebrations; and Hayes Lossiah crafted traditional Cherokee blowguns, darts, bows and arrows. Goingback Chiltoskey and Amanda Crowe became influential teachers for the Cherokee community. Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale, coming to N.C. most likely as missionaries, established Biltmore Estate Industries in Asheville in 1905, initially focusing their production on carving and later adding weaving. In 1915, the pair moved south of Asheville to establish Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers. In the 1930s, several folk art wood carvers were known in and around Brasstown, home of the John C. Campbell Folk School, including Floyd Laney, William Julius “W. J.” Martin, who carved traditional animals, and influential carving teacher Parker Fisher. Other carvers, like Herman and Mabel Estes, made mostly functional items including serving platters. “Brasstown Carvers” was established in the 1950s, known for its small, highly polished animals and nativity scene figures. Today, the Southern Highlands Craft Guild and Piedmont Craftsmen give visibility to the finest wood artists in the state. The aptly named Woody family, now in its seventh generation of crafting traditional wooden rockers and chairs by hand without nails or glue, maintains its business in Spruce Pine while the work of high-end Asheville furniture artists like Randy Shull and Brent Skidmore appears in venues like the Mint Museum Uptown in Charlotte. Renowned Saluda woodturner Stoney Lamar creates art with a lathe, and Bynum outsider artist Clyde Jones invents “critters” with his chainsaw. All have earned international recognition. Hand Forged Iron Stone Mosaic Hanukah Menorah Candelabra David Palombo was an Israeli sculptor and painter. He was born in Turkey to a traditional family and immigrated to the Land of Israel with his parents in 1923. They lived in the Nahalat Shiva neighborhood of Jerusalem. In 1940 he began his studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, and from 1942 was a student of sculptor Ze’ev Ben-Zvi. For a period of time, Palombo was an assistant at Ben-Zvi’s studio and also taught at Bezalel. During this period he was also a member of the “Histadrut HaNoar HaOved VeHaLomed” (The General Federation of Students and Young Workers in Israel). In the 1940s he took art lessons at night. In 1948 he went to Paris, where he visited the studio of the sculptor Constantin Brancusi whose work influenced him. Around 1958 he married the artist Shulamit Sirota. In 1960 he quit his job to devote himself to art. In 1964 he married for the second time to the artist Yona Palombo. The two of them went to live in an abandoned home on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. In 1966 he was killed when the motorcycle on which he was riding ran into a chain stretched across the street to prevent the desecration of Shabbat. His widow opened a museum in their home that was active until the year 2000. Work by Palombo is included in the Judaic collection of the Jewish Museum (a well known Hanukkah menora). Palombo executed the impressive metal gates of the Tent of Remembrance at the Yad Vashem, the memorial to the martyrs of the holocaust, as well as the gates to the Knesset Building the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco award) awarded him a scholarship for study in Japan. He worked in marble, granite, bronze, iron and steel. as well as with glass mosaic tiles. Palombo’s early works, in the 1950s, were influenced by modernist sculptors such as Brancusi. These works were composed of abstract images from nature and were carved out of stone or wood. At the end of the 1950s he began making metal sculptors, using the technique of welding. His work took on a more abstract and expressive character. Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 and Arrastro A.R. 423 are numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse. Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight. Arrastro, from Service Scènes de Corrida, 1959 A.R. 423 features a victorious  bullfighter holding his curved sword, known as an estqoue, over his head. The dark atmosphere created by the deep blue, black, and touch of brown is slashed by the intense yellow down the center of the plate.
