Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Randy Shull is an artist who works fluidly between a variety of mediums, including furniture design, spatial design, painting, and landscape design. He is highly acclaimed for his rich and sensual use of color and space. Awarded a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship in 1994, an NEA Southern Arts Federation grant in 1995, and a master residency at Oregon School of Arts & Crafts in Portland, Randy has also had four solo shows in New York in the past decade. His work is included in a number of important museum collections including The Brooklyn Museum; The High Museum in Atlanta; The Renwick Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft & Design in Charlotte; Racine Museum of Art; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design, and Museum of Art and Design in New York. Randy stays involved in the local community by serving on the board of the Asheville Art Museum. Randy maintains studios in Asheville, NC and Merida, Mexico. In 2008 and 2009 Randy’s work was the subject of a twenty-year retrospective that opened on January 24th at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State, and traveled to the San Francisco Museum of Craft & Design as well as The Bellview Art Museum and The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Reviews of the exhibition can be found in the Raleigh News and Observer and the San Francisco Chronicle. The craft revival in the 1920s brought a renewed interest in traditional native crafts and folk art at places like the John C. Campbell Folk School and Penland School of Crafts. Using pocket knives, carvers transformed scraps of wood into dolls and toys for their children. As tourism developed, carving became an important source of income, and successful carving centers developed in Cherokee, Asheville, Tryon and Brasstown. Seaborn Bradley was known for making war clubs, tomahawks and walking sticks; Will West Long and his son Allen made masks used in native celebrations; and Hayes Lossiah crafted traditional Cherokee blowguns, darts, bows and arrows. Goingback Chiltoskey and Amanda Crowe became influential teachers for the Cherokee community. Eleanor Vance and Charlotte Yale, coming to N.C. most likely as missionaries, established Biltmore Estate Industries in Asheville in 1905, initially focusing their production on carving and later adding weaving. In 1915, the pair moved south of Asheville to establish Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers. In the 1930s, several folk art wood carvers were known in and around Brasstown, home of the John C. Campbell Folk School, including Floyd Laney, William Julius “W. J.” Martin, who carved traditional animals, and influential carving teacher Parker Fisher. Other carvers, like Herman and Mabel Estes, made mostly functional items including serving platters. “Brasstown Carvers” was established in the 1950s, known for its small, highly polished animals and nativity scene figures. Today, the Southern Highlands Craft Guild and Piedmont Craftsmen give visibility to the finest wood artists in the state. The aptly named Woody family, now in its seventh generation of crafting traditional wooden rockers and chairs by hand without nails or glue, maintains its business in Spruce Pine while the work of high-end Asheville furniture artists like Randy Shull and Brent Skidmore appears in venues like the Mint Museum Uptown in Charlotte. Renowned Saluda woodturner Stoney Lamar creates art with a lathe, and Bynum outsider artist Clyde Jones invents “critters” with his chainsaw. All have earned international recognition. This piece is unsigned. Irving Lehman (1900-1983) was an American Jewish painter, sculptor, engraver, and designer. Born in Kiev in then Russia, Lehman studied at the Art Students League, Cooper Union and the National Academy of Art and spent much of his working life in New York City. Part of the Abstract Expressionist school, he worked in oil and watercolor as a painter and in metal and steel as a sculptor; his works have been shown in galleries in England, France, Italy, Israel and Japan, and were included in an international traveling exhibition in Europe in 1951. Like many other artists of his generation, he painted for the WPA and then adopted a more abstract style after WWII. Lehman spent much of his career in NYC. He had his first exhibition at ACA Gallery in 1934. He also exhibited at the Whitney, National Academy, PAFA, Brooklyn Museum, Chicago Art Institute, and others. Frank Vittor (1888-1966) important bronze of mother and child. Signed by the artist “F. Vittor” and dated 1915. Also bears the foundry mark. Measures 12 1/2"h x 12 ½”w x 9"long. Bronze rests on a 1 ½ inch marble plinth. Artist born in Italy, studied with Rodin. The foundry is the National Art bronze works. The bronze was converted to a lamp at one point, and still bears a threaded tube projecting from the lower base approximately ½ inch. Frank Vittor (January, 6, 1888 - January 24, 1968) was an Italian immigrant to the United States who became famous as a sculptor. Vittor was born in Mozzato, Como, a suburb of Milan, Italy. He studied art in Milan at the Academy of Beres and then traveled to Paris, France to study under Auguste Rodin. When Vittor was 18, in 1906, U.S. architect Stanford White brought Vittor to New York to work on his staff. White, who had designed Madison Square Garden II, was murdered at a performance at The Garden two weeks after Vittor arrived. The youth, having little money and knowing very limited English, decided to stay in America and soon opened an art studio. He met his future wife, Ade Mae Humphreys, a resident of Pittsburgh, and made the move to her home town. Aviator Charles Lindbergh's first solo trans-Atlantic 3,600-mile (5,800 km) flight between Long Island, New York and Paris, France was immortalized in bronze by Vittor with a 50-foot-tall (15 m) sculpture showing a winged youth spanning the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower. Congress approved the expenditure in 1928, and the work was completed in 1929. Perhaps no work by Vittor created as much controversy and media coverage as did his nude statue of Henrietta Leaver, Miss America 1935. Though Leaver posed for Vittor, she did so in a bathing suit, accompanied by her grandmother. Upon first viewing the life-size 5-foot 5-inch plaster statue Leaver was shocked that it was a nude and demanded her representation be draped or veiled. Vittor did not agree and called in art experts to judge the work and all agreed it should stay as it had been created. Leaver did not back down and demanded people her own age review The American Venus, as it had originally been called. Unfortunately for Leaver her 60 peers, many of whom were art students, agreed it should remain unveiled. Though the strong disagreement between the two eventually did subside, Leaver, Vittor and the statue resurfaced five decades later in recaps of controversial Miss America mishaps. Baseball player Honus Wagner, one of the first five players inducted into the Hall of Fame, was memorialized by Vittor in a 17-foot-tall (5.2 m) bronze statue, originally on display near the Pittsburgh Pirates Forbes Field. It was moved to Three Rivers Stadium and, when that stadium was imploded in 1971, the statue was relocated to PNC Park.[6] In 1958, one of Vittor's greatest works, a 50-foot-tall (15 m) granite base and bronze statue of Christopher Columbus, was unveiled in Pittsburgh's Schenley Park. Shortly after the statue was placed, the bronze plaque at the base was stolen by vandals. The Sons of Columbus USA desire to replace the plaque with the original wording; however, there exists no record of what Vittor had written regarding Columbus. Charles Lindbergh was the recipient of a second work of art created by Vittor. The artist and sculptor designed a commemorative stamp picturing the pilot and his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis. Walter F. Brown, the U.S. Postmaster General, authorized a 175th anniversary commemorative "Battle of Braddock" 2-cent stamp to be designed by Vittor. The artwork he created featured a likeness of Colonel George Washington with the inscription "Battle of Braddock's Field, 1755-1930. In 1936 the U.S. Congress authorized minting a half-dollar coin to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the American Civil War. Vittor was the person selected to design the coin. The obverse depicts the profile of two soldiers, one from the North and one from the South and the reverse holds a symbol of the battle placed between the combatant's shields. The coins were distributed through the Pennsylvania State Commission for Gettysburg. Throughout Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities there exist more than 50 statues and fountains, as well as numerous other works, including a dozen historical panels on County bridges...

Morris had graduated from Yale in 1928 and studied at the League until 1930, when he went to Paris to attend the Academie Moderne. A sculptor, writer, art critic and teacher in addition to abstract painter Morris himself later taught at the Art Students League from 1943-1944, as well as St. John's College, Annapolis, Maryland, 1960-1961. Morris' intrinsic abstract bent was made even clearer by his positive feeling for Hans Arp's sculpture. He and Arp edited the French art magazine, "Plastique."
