Medusa and Andromeda, is a unique three dimensional terra cotta sculpture/vase, created by the German firm Magdeburger Kunstwerkstatten, Reps and Trinte, a studio that specialized in fine works in terra cotta.
This monumental piece depicts the entire story of the Medusa, who holds Andromeda captive by chaining her to rocks in the ocean. You can see the chains at her wrists and ankles. Medusa charges the Leviathan (dragon) as guard over the captive Andromeda. Andromeda was rescued by her future husband Perseus who killed the dragon and saved his future bride.

About the artist:
Paul-Édouard Delabrièrre (29 March 1829 – 1912) was a French animalier sculptor who worked in the mid-to-late 19th century and the early 20th century. He had 70 of his sculptures juried into the prestigious Salon art exhibition held annually in Paris. His monumental work called L'Equitation adorns the facade of the Louvre museum.
Delabrièrre was an important member of the animalier school who exhibited at the Salon from 1848 through 1882. His first two exhibits were typical of the style of his work throughout his career. He submitted Greyhound Holding a Hare and Wounded Deer. Most of his oeuvre were comparatively small models, however his larger pieces often incorporated figures. His work varies in style and quality with some models directly influenced by Antoine-Louis Barye who was the father of the animalier school.
Delabrièrre's more popular realist bronzes were of impeccable quality and place him in the top echelon of his school. The facade of the Louvre incorporates one of his largest groups, the monumental L 'Equitation, which depicts a horse and two putti, one of whom is aboard the horse. It was completed by Delabrièrre in 1857 and installed that same year. In the final two years of his exhibiting career Delabrièrre experimented with iron as a worthy material for the Salon, although that idea did not go over well with collectors who were accustomed to bronzes. The works that were done in cast iron were produced by the art foundry Durenne Val Osne under the direction of Pierre Louis Rouillard. A list of Delabrièrre's 70 works presented at the Salon can be found in the Dictionnaire des Sculpteurs by Stanislas Lami.
Versatility was one of Delabrièrre's strengths. The range of animals he sculpted covers nearly every large mammal to be found in continental Europe. He also did a few lion and panther sculptures during his career, as well as some camel and bird pieces, but his favorite subjects seemed to be dogs and big cats. He exhibited his Javanese panther in plaster at the 1857 Salon as well as Tigre du Bengale at the 1865 Salon. His repertoire also included some pieces executed in the orientalist genre. Delabrièrre used both the sand casting method and the lost wax method to create his sculptures.

Kuhn’s sculptures were collected by the noted early modernist collector John Quinn (1870-1924). Among the works in Quinn’s collection was the icon Brancusi Portait of Mlle Pogany, the work that inspired Kuhn to create the wood carving “Mask” (FA10815). Mlle Pogany was chosen by Kuhn for exhibition at the Armory Show, 1913. Other sculptures by Kuhn are in the collections of the Smithsonian Museum and the Heckscher Museum.
The group of 15 wood carvings came from the estate of the artist to his daughter Brenda Kuhn.
The Kuhn Estate (Brenda) originally worked with Kennedy Galleries of New York who published a detailed illustrated catalog of offerings from the estate in 1967. The estate left Kennedy Galleries some time prior to 1983. They established estate representation with Barridof Galleries of Portland, Maine in partnership with Salander O’Reilly Galleries Inc. of New York. This partnership published a monograph catalog on the artist in 1984.
Of our group of 15 works, three of the early c. 1913 examples have Salander O’Reilly labels affixed to them. The group of works were involved in the Salander O’Reilly bankruptcy liquidation where they were bought from. There have been several related examples that have come to auction since the year 2000.
In 1912, Kuhn was one of the founders of the organization Association of American Painters and Sculptors, the organizing body for
what became known as The Armory Show, 1913. The Heckscher Museum exhibition, European Modernism, as Told by Americans, gives insight in to Kuhn’s travels, artistic associations and the influences on his artwork.
“In 1912 Kuhn traveled through Europe securing loans from artists and dealers to represent Impressionism, Post Impressionism and the newer strains of art like Fauvism and Cubism. Inspired by these developments, Kuhn tried out Fauvism and Cubism for himself.”
“Kuhn would later become an adviser to collectors like John Quinn and Lillie Bliss, a supporter of the Armory Show and later one of the founders of the Museum of Modern Art.”
Quinn acquired seven Kuhn sculptures in wood, bronze and gilt bronze which are listed in his estate inventory.

Johann Friedrich Naumann (1780 - 1857) was a German scientist and editor. Highly regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology in Europe, Naumann has often been referred to as the ‘Father of Ornithology”. His presentation shows the birds in their natural settings. Naumann employed renowned bird artists of his time such as. Keulemans, Kleinschmidt, Geisler, Von Riesenthal, De Maes and Goering. The resulting tome included over 400 plates. So popular was this work that it enjoyed a second printing less than 20 years later. Its relevancy was undisputed.
Naturgeschicte der Land- Und Wasser- Vogel Des Nordlichen Deutschlands un Angranaender Lander, Naumann the elder’s work, was first published in 1795-1817. Naturgeschichte der Vogel Mitteleuropas, or Natural History of Central European Birds, was and published in various formats between 1797 and 1817. Buchanan and Fisher describe this later second edition as the ". . . most scholarly and complete ornithological text book of its time (perhaps of any time)."
