Bronze Sculptures

Dirk Staschke is best known for his exploration of Dutch Vanitas still life themes in the medium of ceramics. His current body of work explores the space in between sculpture and painting. His work often uses meticulous representation as foil for examining skill and craft. He received his BFA from the University of Montevallo followed by an MFA from Alfred University and has maintained an ongoing studio practice and extensive exhibition record for twenty-three years. During this time, he has taught at many notable universities, including Emily Carr University, Alfred University and New York University. His work has been shown internationally and resides in the permanent collections of several museums including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington (DC), Icheon Museum, World Ceramic Center (Gwango-dong) South Korea, Crocker Museum (CA) and the Portland Art Museum (OR). He has received various artist’s grants including grants from The Virginia Groot Foundation and the Canada Council on the Arts. This splendid sculpture represents Young Girl with a Goat (Amalthea and Jupiter's Goat), after the original by Pierre Julien commissioned by Louis XVI in 1785 and completed in 1787 for the cot of Queen Marie-Antoinette in Rambouillet. The work of the sculptor Pierre Julien decorated the interior of a grotto in a pavilion decorated with bas-reliefs by the same sculptor (acquired by the State by dation in 2003). The work was the main element of a rock basin, which was destroyed during the renovation of the gardens of the small castle. The same sculpture was seized during the Revolution and exhibited in the Louvre from 1829. The terracotta sketch, which belonged to the collector Ernst May, must have adorned his château de la Couharde (Yvelines) before entering the Louvre's collections in 1920. The bronze set with a beautiful gilded patina presented here is a work after the original by Pierre Julien (1731-1804) and dates from the 19th century (around 1850). The superbly preserved sculpture, which has belonged to the same family since its acquisition, is presented on its original base in grey serpentine marble. The quality of this work is doubly certified: - on the one hand it is stamped with a round stamp at the top "A. This stamp is a sign of high quality. Achille Collas (1794 - 1859) was the French engineer, engraver and illustrator, inventor among other things of the patented mathematical reduction process of the 19th century to reproduce sculpted objects in reduction, which was very successful. He was awarded a prize at the 1855 exhibition: his "Procédé mécanique", the name under which he prints all his productions, is easily recognisable by the finesse of its execution and by the famous stamp which appears on the base (terrace) of this sculpture. - On the other hand, an important signature is found on the terrace of the sculpture "F. Barbedienne Fondeur", founder. In 1844, Achille Collas, in order to protect his invention, formed the Société Collas et Barbedienne (Paris) with the art founder Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892), which began to produce and sell famous but smaller sculptures in plaster, wood, bronze or ivory. The first object to be marketed was the Venus de Milo after the original in the Louvre Museum. Other sculptures such as the sculpture of George Washington, of which a bronze bust was made by the Barbedienne & Process Collas foundry, are currently in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris, the Barbedienne company again presented a large number of its compositions, including the large neo-Renaissance clock of 1878. This clock, which was part of the Leblanc-Barbedienne estate, was donated by his heirs to the city of Paris, and is kept in the city hall. Pierre Julien (20 June 1731 - 17 December 1804) was a French neo-classical sculptor who worked in the full range of rococo and neoclassical styles. He had an early apprenticeship in Le Puy-en-Velay, near his native village of Saint-Paulien, and then at the École de Dessin in Lyon, before entering the Paris workshop of Guillaume Coustou le Jeune. In 1765, he won the Prix de Rome for sculpture with a bas-relief panel depicting a subject from Antiquity and entered the Royal School for Protected Pupils, which offered a special curriculum under the direction of the painter Louis-Michel van Loo. He was a boarder at the Académie de France in Rome from 1768 to 1773, where he was influenced by the wave of neoclassicism affecting his fellow students. As boarders were required to do, he sent back to France a slightly reduced marble copy of the so-called Cleopatra, the Sleeping Ariadne from the Vatican, which survives in Versailles. Back in France and with his former master, he worked on the sculpture of the mausoleum of Louis, the Grand Dauphin, in the cathedral of Sens. After a failed attempt in 1776, with his Ganymede, he was accepted by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1778, with a Dying Gladiator. He was appointed one of the first members of the Institut de France in 1795, and knight of the Legion of Honour in 1804. He was commissioned by the Count of Angiviller, director of the King's Buildings, on behalf of Louis XVI, to paint the figures for a series of life-size portraits of the great men of France: he produced a Jean de La Fontaine and a Nicolas Poussin, whom he chose to depict in a nightgown, similar to the draperies of a Roman toga. While fulfilling commissions in Paris, for the church of Sainte-Geneviève (now the Panthéon, Paris), or for the Pavillon de Flore in the Louvre, he sculpted in 1785 a virtuoso marble set representing the nymph Amalthée and Jupiter's nurse goat for the Queen's Dairy at the Château de Rambouillet; for his model, he adapted the pose of the famous Venus of the Capitoline. She welded crushed automobile scrap metal into energetic moving torsos, horses, and flying draperies. "One of the things that made Judy stand out as an artist was her ability to work in many different mediums. Some of this was by choice, and sometimes it was by necessity. Her surroundings often dictated what medium she could work with at any given time. After all, you can't bring you're welding gear with you to Rome ."Brown attended Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers, New York (B.A., 1954), where she learned to weld from her teacher, Theodore Roszak, a pioneering abstract expressionist sculptor. I first realized my love for visual storytelling when I began producing and directing television shows. Starting with the writer’s script, my palette was everything seen through the camera’s lens: actors, movement, light, and mood. Shot by shot, I wove together these images into two-dimensional dramas. I longed, however, to tell my own stories, to move beyond words and pictures, and to explore themes that ignited my imagination. My sculptures and assemblages became the three-dimensional stories I wanted to tell; stories about relationships, childhood, time passage, marriage, motherhood, and secrets never told. Antique Horse Bronze Portrait of a Trotting Stallion Isidore Jules Bonheur (France, 1827-1901) Cast bronze mounted on a rectangular plinth with dark brown patina, Signed: I. BONHEUR 17 x 11 3/4 A brilliant exploration of a stallion in full trot. The patina is a deep, warm walnut brown with honey-colored tones. Isidore Bonheur was best known and the most distinguished of the 19th century French animalier sculptors. Isidore, the younger brother of Rosa Bonheur and older brother of Auguste, began his studies of painting initially with his father, who was friends with Francisco Goya. By 1848 he debuted at the Paris Salon having discontinued animal and landscape painting to concentrate on creating sculptures and in 1849, Bonheur enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He won medals at the Paris Salon in 1859 and did so again in 1865 and in 1869. After entering the Exposition Universelle 1855, he won the Gold Medal in 1889. In the 1870s exhibited in the London at the Royal Academy of Arts where he earned great prestige and won the coveted Medaille d’Or. After winning numerous other medals and prizes, Bonheur was awarded the Legion d' Honneur in 1895 and he was Knighted in Portugal, Spain and France. Bonheur continued exhibiting at the Paris Salon until 1899. Many of his bronzes were fabricated at the foundry owned by Hippolyte Peyrol, Bonheur's brother-in-law by marriage to Isidore’s youngest sister Juliette Bonheur. The Peyrol casts for both Rosa and Isidore are exceptionally well executed which suggests a strong working relationship between the founder and sculptor. There is little doubt that Isidore Bonheur was an acute observer of nature; his animals were not anthropomorphized but modelled to catch movement or posture characteristics of the particular species he was sculpting. He achieved this most successfully with his sculptures of horses which are usually depicted as relaxed rather than spirited. These figures are among his most renowned works and his equestrian models became very popular, particularly among the British aristocracy. An acute observer of nature, his sculptures reflect his commitment to the Realist school - with precise detailing of the movements of animals in their natural habitats. Biography: François Pompon (1855-1933) is known for his animal sculptures whose innovative style is characterized by the simplification of shapes and polished surfaces. Pompon entered as an apprentice in the workshop of his father, Alban Pompon (1823-1907) who was a "compagnon du devoir" of the carpenter-cabinetmakers. Thanks to a scholarship obtained by the parish priest, he left in 1870 for Dijon where he became an apprentice stonemason with a marble worker. He attended evening classes at the School of Fine Arts in Dijon, first in architecture and engraving with Célestin Nanteuil, then in sculpture with François Dameron (1835-1900). After a short stint in the army in 1875, Pompon arrived in Paris where he became a marble worker in a funeral business near the Montparnasse cemetery. He attended evening classes at the Petite École, the future National School of Decorative Arts. His teachers were the sculptors Aimé Millet (1819-1891) and Pierre Louis Rouillard (1820-1881), also professor of anatomy, who showed him the menagerie of the Jardin des Plantes.
