Parcel gilt and patinated bronze figural statue of a Water carrier with a pitcher on her shoulder. The contrast between the deep bronze and bright gilding is incredibly striking. The woman drips in gold jewelry and drapery, wearing arm bangles, a large necklace and outrageous earrings. Beautifully casted, the piece's details are crisp and well defined, with beautiful even patinas and gilding. She stands atop an exquisitely carved, two toned, wooden base made of three sections. A fluted column with a small garland nestled within each flute makes up the main body, while a bellied band carved to mimic tufted cushions or upholstery is sandwiched between the column and a black hexagonal ped. Attributed to the Graux-Marly Foundry. Based at 8 rue du Parc-Royal in Paris in 1860, started by Jules Graux-Marly and continued by his sons into the later 19th Century. The firm exhibited at the 1878 Paris Exhibition and was well-respected for both their figurative sculptures and decorative ornaments. Dirk Staschke is best known for his exploration of Dutch Vanitas still life themes in the medium of ceramics. His current body of work explores the space in between sculpture and painting. His work often uses meticulous representation as foil for examining skill and craft. He received his BFA from the University of Montevallo followed by an MFA from Alfred University and has maintained an ongoing studio practice and extensive exhibition record for twenty-three years. During this time, he has taught at many notable universities, including Emily Carr University, Alfred University and New York University. His work has been shown internationally and resides in the permanent collections of several museums including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington (DC), Icheon Museum, World Ceramic Center (Gwango-dong) South Korea, Crocker Museum (CA) and the Portland Art Museum (OR). “ We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust.” – Rumi Physics and astronomy inspire my artwork. As an artist I create mostly from an intuitive place while scientists’ work is of an empirical nature. I would like to be part of the link that bridges the gap between art and science. On this path I observe the micro and the macro universe, two sides of a natural polarity that together comprise a unified whole. This endless expanse is interconnected and entangled as energy waves activate all form; nothing is ever static. Whether we actually see it or not energy infiltrates all things. Dark matter that we cannot see occupies approximately 84.5% of the universe; we know of it because of its gravitational field only. Since infinite space surrounds us, I am intrigued by the concept of ambiguous spaces, such as space within space, suggestive of multidimensional space, and interstitial space, the space between matter. Energy and space make up our universe. In my current work I use drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, multi-media and installation as my forms of expression. Sometimes the work demands that I include the figure other times it does not.
