Dirk Staschke is best known for his exploration of Dutch Vanitas still life themes in the medium of ceramics. His current body of work explores the space in between sculpture and painting. His work often uses meticulous representation as foil for examining skill and craft. He received his BFA from the University of Montevallo followed by an MFA from Alfred University and has maintained an ongoing studio practice and extensive exhibition record for twenty-three years. During this time, he has taught at many notable universities, including Emily Carr University, Alfred University and New York University. His work has been shown internationally and resides in the permanent collections of several museums including the Smithsonian Museum in Washington (DC), Icheon Museum, World Ceramic Center (Gwango-dong) South Korea, Crocker Museum (CA) and the Portland Art Museum (OR). He has received various artist’s grants including grants from The Virginia Groot Foundation and the Canada Council on the Arts. "Cover Jar with 2 Birds" is an original stoneware vase by Ernst Gramatzki. 9" x 5 1/4" art Ernst Gramatzki is a world renowned artist, sculptor, potter, painter and poet. Some of his work is in the Smithsonian Institute in D.C. as well as in art galleries in both the U.S and Europe. Ernst was born in Koenigsverg, Germany, in the Russian sector near the Baltic Sea. The area is also referred to as Kaliningrad and is the birthplace of philosopher Emanuel Kant. His interest in art is the result of two Hungarian art students taken in as borders by his family following the Hungarian revolution. One, who is still well known throughout Europe, was a potter. "I shared half of the garage with him," said Ernst, who attended the School of Art in Hamburg. It was in 1961 that Ernst immigrated to the United States, taking a position with the Milwaukee Public Museum. He has lived in Rochester for nearly 30 years. Each room of his home is dedicated to a different art form. A room at the top of the stairs is filled with oil paints and multi-paneled works that are still in progress. In the basement, wet clay sits ready to be molded by inspired hands. Ernst still does work for museums, which sometimes directs where he focuses his energy each day. "I try to juggle the things I have to do with the things I want to do," he said. "One is always at the expense of the other. "I like to blow things up that people are too busy to look at," he said of his oil paintings. "You have to sit and look at things. You don't need to name things. That limits people in their imagination and what they would like it to be." An entire painting may be devoted to the stains on the bottom of a coffee mug, or a close-up view of a twig. Ernst said his inspiration can come from anything around him. He found a use for a dried-up grapefruit by using it as a mold for a clay stamp. Nothing, including an old corn cob, is overlooked as an artistic tool. "I dream lots of things. It's like turning on the TV as soon as I hit the sack," he said, working the surface of a clay toad he had sculpted the following day, using a walnut to stamp out some eyes. Most of his pottery takes the form of covered jars, each of which has its own number and entry in a journal that includes a sketch and to whom the piece were sold. Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso (Málaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) Paseo A.R. 416 and Arrastro A.R. 423 are numbered from the edition of 50 on the reverse and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse. Pablo Picasso was an avid fan of bullfighting his entire life, attending his first corridas when he was a child in Spain and gaining a renewed interest in the events when he settled in the South of France after World War II. Undoubtedly the theatrical drama and flashy machismo of the matadors appealed greatly to Picasso's sensibilities and resonated with his Spanish roots. In 1959, Picasso produced an 8-piece plate series, each featuring a different bullfighting scene suggested through lively stipple lines. Paseo A.R. 416 depicts a line of bullfighters highlighted by a streak of yellow. The strokes of blue above and below the figures contrast with the warm of the yellow, creating visual tension that anticipates the drama of the fight. Arrastro, from Service Scènes de Corrida, 1959 A.R. 423 features a victorious  bullfighter holding his curved sword, known as an estqoue, over his head. The dark atmosphere created by the deep blue, black, and touch of brown is slashed by the intense yellow down the center of the plate. Cindy Avroch is a multi-talented artist who began her career by following in her mother’s footsteps. Cindy’s first love was always drawing, painting and sculpting, although Cindy is also a trained dancer.
