Stunning Early 20th Century Khotan Rug from East Turkestan
Located in San Francisco, CA
Situated along the ancient Silk Roads running between China and Central Asia, Khotan is an oasis city in the region of East Turkestan in what is now Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region in northwest China. Reflecting the geography in which it was woven, this piece blends elements of Central Asian and Chinese design. A central medallion is drawn in the center of an abstract field which actively combines a host of well-spaced floating motifs. Butterflies, shrubs and smaller floral forms are drawn spaciously spanning the area surrounding the medallion and in between two planted pots on either end of the field. Two borders derived from Chinese traditions frame the composition. With their pleasing light palette and spacious drawing, Khotan weavings...

Outstanding Floral Bessarabian Kilim with Light Green Border, 19th Century
Located in San Francisco, CA
Outstanding Floral Bessarabian Kilim with Light Green Border, Mid-19th Century Pile carpets and flat-weaves known in the market as 'Bessarabian' were woven mostly in the 19th century in what are now the countries of Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine—along the northwestern coastal areas of the Black Sea (in eastern Europe). Both pile and Kilim types use floral subject matter and a distinct coloration, with a dominant dark ground and accents in rose reds. This older Bessarabian flat-weave uses a red derived from imported cochineal and adds a pleasing complimentary contrasting light green border, a feature lost in later examples. Planted flower pots...

East Anatolian Long Rug
Located in San Francisco, CA
Three large and boldly articulated medallions in the style of early Kazak weavings from the Caucasus dominate the vibrant madder-red field of this historically important and masterfully executed example from eastern Anatolia. The treatment of this iconic central medallion as repeat ornament is innovative and highly successful. While exceedingly true to the spirit of drawing and its execution, the distinctive construction of this piece reveals it as the work of a particularity skillful Anatolian weaver. This piece was published in "Oriental Rugs from Pacific Collections" in conjunction with the International Conference on Oriental Rugs (ICOC) in 1990. Antiques and art courtesy of Foster Gwin...
