A Close Look at art-deco Jewelry

Fascination with the Jazz Age is endless, and even today jewelry designers continue to be inspired by authentic Art Deco jewelry and watches.

The Art Deco period, encompassing the 1920s and ’30s, ushered in a very distinct look in the design of jewelry. There were many influences on the jewelry of the era that actually began to take shape prior to the 1920s. In 1909, Serge Diaghilev brought the Ballet Russes to Paris, and women went wild for the company’s exotic and vibrant costumes It’s no wonder, then, that jade, lapis lazuli, coral, turquoise and other bright gemstones became all the rage. There already existed a fascination with the East, particularly China and Japan, and motifs consisting of fans and masks started to show up in Art Deco jewelry.

However, the event that had the greatest influence on Deco was the excavation of the tomb of King Tut in 1922. When the world saw what was hidden in Tut’s burial chamber, it sent just about everyone into a frenzy. Pierre Cartier wrote in 1923 that “the discovery of the tomb will bring some sweeping changes in fashion jewelry.” And he couldn’t have been more right. “Egyptomania” left an indelible mark on all of the major jewelry houses, from Cartier to Van Cleef & Arpels, Boucheron and Georges Fouquet. (Cartier created some of the most iconic jewelry designs that defined this era.)

While a lot of Art Deco jewelry was black and white — the black coming from the use of onyx or black enamel and the white from rock crystal and diamonds — there is plenty of color in jewelry of the era. A perfect accent to diamonds in platinum settings were blue sapphires, emeralds and rubies, and these stones were also used in combination with each other.

Many designers employed coral, jade and lapis lazuli, too. In fact, some of the most important avant-garde jewelers of the period, like Jean Després and Jean Fouquet (son of Georges), would combine white gold with ebony and malachite for a jolt of color.

A lot of the jewelry produced during this time nodded to current fashion trends, and women often accessorized their accessories. The cloche hat was often accented with geometric diamond brooches or double-clip brooches. Backless evening dresses looked fabulous with sautoir necklaces, and long pearl necklaces that ended with tassels, popular during the Edwardian period, were favored by women everywhere, including Coco Chanel.

Finding the Right lever-back-earrings for You

Ear piercing is very popular everywhere in today’s world. As a result, it is difficult to overstate how much everyone pines for a dependable pair of earrings. Modernist drop earrings, glamorous Victorian hoops, geometrically complex chandelier earrings — you can’t go wrong with this must-have accessory. For hundreds of years, lever-back earrings have been a part of this category of alluring jewelry.

The ancient Greeks fashioned earrings from gold that had a similar snapping mechanism to modern-day lever-back earrings. Lever-back earrings, as we know them, have come in and out of fashion over the decades, such as in the Georgian era. The lever back used on earrings in Europe eventually made its way across the Atlantic to jewelry design in the United States.

These accessories are typically thought of as the most reliable and safest way to wear earrings, so they are perfect for larger pieces with multiple stones. Famous jewelers such as Natkina and Tiffany & Co. have crafted gorgeous lever-back earrings for their collections over the years.

Vintage lever-back earrings range in style and appearance and are a charming addition to any wardrobe. Who doesn’t love the finishing touch that earrings can provide for one’s ensemble? A good pair of lever-back earrings can be more eye-catching than a bracelet: Even the most beautiful bangle can be overlooked on the wrist, while earrings, worn on either side of your face, are almost guaranteed to be noticed.

Find a variety of contemporary and antique lever-back earrings designed in styles to match any jewelry collection on 1stDibs.

Questions About Dormouse Diamond Earrings
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
There is no single best diamond for earrings. Brilliant cuts can provide sparkle that draws the eye and adds glamor to materials, while step-cut styles emphasize the color and clarity of high-quality gemstones. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of diamond earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Yes, you can wear pearl earrings with diamond earrings if you wish. One way to tie the look together is to choose pearl and diamond earrings with matching settings. For example, you can pair platinum diamond and pearl earrings or yellow gold diamond and pearl earrings. Shop a large assortment of earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
There is no single type of diamond earring that shines the most. How much sparkle a diamond earring has depends on the gemstone's cut. Generally, brilliant cuts like the round, pear, marquise, oval, heart, radiant and princess show off the most sparkle and shine. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of diamond earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
What diamond earrings symbolize is largely a matter of personal interpretation. Some people associate diamonds with true love, making earrings set with the gemstones a romantic gift. Diamonds are also the birthstone for April and may be worn to represent a person’s birthday. On 1stDibs, find a collection of diamond earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023
The best diamond for earrings is one that appeals to you and suits your budget. When set in earrings, many diamond cuts look attractive, such as the brilliant round, the oval, the pear, the princess, the emerald and the cushion. When considering color, keep the setting in mind. With yellow or rose gold, diamonds rated I through K or better can be ideal, depending on the size, while platinum and rose gold will nicely offset diamonds rated H through J or better. Because you rarely view diamond earrings up close, inclusions are difficult to spot. As a result, most experts recommend choosing SI1 clarity or higher. Explore a large selection of diamond earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
The four Cs for diamond earrings are cut, color, clarity and carats. The cut refers to the number of facets and their arrangement, which affect a diamond's shape and sparkle. Color means whether diamonds have a noticeable yellow tint; completely clear diamonds are the rarest. Clarity is whether a diamond has any inclusions or imperfections, and carats describe the weight or size of the diamonds. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of diamond earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
One way to know if diamond earrings are real is to try the fog test. To do so, breathe on the earrings, and then look to see how long the fog created by your breath lasts. On real diamonds, the fog clears quickly. While this test can provide fairly accurate results, experts generally agree that the best way to authenticate diamond jewelry is to enlist the services of an experienced jeweler, jewelry dealer or appraiser. They can examine your jewelry thoroughly to give you a definitive answer as to whether or not it's real. Shop a diverse assortment of diamond earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 21, 2023
The most popular diamond earring shape can vary from season to season based on trends. However, some shapes have timeless appeal and always remain in style. Examples include stud earrings in brilliant round, oval and princess cuts. Explore a large selection of diamond earrings from some of the world's top dealers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024
Yes, you can try to tell when diamond earrings are fake through various tests. One of the simplest and safest for jewelry is the breath test, where you breathe on the earrings and watch to see how quickly the fog clears. The condensation will usually disappear more quickly from a genuine diamond. Because it can be difficult to determine a real diamond from a synthetic one through sight and basic at-home tests, most experts recommend consulting a jeweler, an experienced dealer or an appraiser. Shop a variety of diamond earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Yes, diamond hoop earrings can be in style. The choice to wear diamond hoop earrings is really a matter of personal preference.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
The cost of a diamond earring varies based on a number of factors. The price of diamond earrings largely depends on its caratage. Other factors that influence the price include, cut, clarity, condition, and craftsmanship. On 1stDibs.com, you can purchase a diamond earring starting at $83.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 6, 2023
Generally, a good rating for diamond earrings is SI2 and above for clarity and H or above for color. Diamond earrings with these ratings will appear eye-clean, meaning any imperfections and inclusions will be difficult to spot with the naked eye. The diamond's color is also likely to appear clear in its setting. On 1stDibs, shop a diverse assortment of diamond earrings.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
To tell if diamond earrings are real, you can conduct some tests yourself. Try breathing on the gemstones to produce a fog and watch how quickly it disappears. Fake gemstones will hold onto the condensation for longer than authentic diamonds. You can also try dropping the earrings into water. Generally, authentic diamonds will sink due to their weight, but glass imitations are lighter and will float. If you remain uncertain as to whether your diamond jewelry is real, a certified appraiser can assist you. Shop a collection of diamond earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Yes, you can order diamond earrings online. Some jewelry makers sell diamond earrings directly to customers through their official websites. Others partner with third-party online stores that sell rings from a variety of makers. You can also shop on trusted online platforms to find diamond earrings. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of antique, vintage and contemporary diamond earrings from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 23, 2024
Yes, diamond earrings can be a good gift. Since there are many different types available, you can find diamond-set earrings to suit nearly every taste. To select a gift they'll love, think about the types of jewelry they usually wear. Diamond studs or small hoops featuring diamonds can be a good option for everyday wear, while dramatic diamond dangles can be an attractive accessory for special occasions. Shop a wide variety of diamond earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertDecember 12, 2023
Yes, it can be good to wear diamond earrings. Diamonds are a visually appealing gemstone, and their popularity means that you can find them on many different types of earrings, from dainty studs to swingy dangles to classic hoops to dramatic chandeliers. Rated at the top of the Mohs scale, diamonds are also hard and can hold up to the effects of regular wear. Shop a wide range of diamond earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
What type of diamond stud earring is the best depends on your preferences, as there isn't a single cut that is better than the others. If you like the look of sparkling studs, consider brilliant cuts like the round, heart and arrow, princess, oval, pear or marquise. Stepped cuts like the emerald, cushion and Asscher let the color and clarity of diamonds show through and can also be appealing choices. Shop a variety of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 1, 2023
The most popular shapes for diamond stud earrings include round diamonds and princess cut diamonds. But stud earrings, no matter the shape, generally add a bit of glam to any ensemble. Stud earrings are simple and usually small in size, making them lightweight and easy to wear. Unlike other earrings, stud earrings have a floating appearance. They are often made with a single gemstone, such as a sapphire or emerald, and a straight post that goes through the ear, typically with a rubber or metal backing to hold it in place. Find stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2023
Yes, the cut matters for diamond stud earrings because it guides their appearance and shape. The round brilliant cut is a classic option with its tremendous sparkle and symmetrical shape. Other brilliant cuts to consider include the oval, marquise, radiant and princess cuts. Stepped cuts like the emerald and cushion show off diamonds' color and clarity more than their sparkle. Explore a large selection of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 14, 2023
Diamond stud earrings largely remain popular year after year. They are so timeless and indispensable that many people upgrade the size of their diamond studs every few years or to celebrate key milestones. Whether you start out with a one-carat total weight pair for your Sweet 16 or treat yourself to a five-carat total weight later in life, diamond studs deliver the perfect amount of sparkle every time you put them on. Find a diverse assortment of diamond stud earrings on 1stDibs.
