Au Départ are one of the Grande Marques of French luggage makers. They were founded in 1834 around the advent of railway travel; Au Départ literally means 'at departure'. In 1847, Au Départ first opened at 7 Boulevard Denain in Paris selling luggage and travel goods, positioned opposite the newly opened Gare du Nord railway station. However, it wasn't until 1871 that the company really began to expand, when it was taken over by the Bertin brothers, Ernest and Paul who had started their business selling haberdashery at the Saint-Quentin market and then expanded to include bags and baskets. Under the stewardship of the Bertin brother’s, a second Paris shop was opened in 1874 at 29, Avenue de l’Opéra, while the Boulevard Denain store expanded its product offering to include armoury, hunting and fishing equipment...

Antique Au Départ Steamer Trunk, France, 1910s
By Au Depart 3
Located in Vienna, AT
Au Départ is the French historical trunk maker that began its life in the early 19th century. Au Départ is considered as one of four greatest French trunk-makers alongside Louis Vuitton, Goyard and Moynat. Years passed by and Au Départ fulfilled the exquisite traveling needs of the European upper class as the quality and craftsmanship rivaled those of the more famous competitors.
This wonderful antique Au Départ trunk is from the turn of the century, circa 1910. Marked with the original Au Départ sticker 'Malletier depuis' on the inside. The generous size offers plenty of storage space. It is superbly constructed in tan vulcanized fabric on a wooden frame with wood bracings, signed brass closures and leather handles attached with brass rivets. The interior consists of three removable compartments to maximize storage capacity. Leather belt on the exterior.
This is as much a collectors item as it is an amazing luxury piece to decorate a stylish home. Fast forward to 2020: the Au Départ brand has now been reborn as the latest heritage Maison from Paris to be rejuvenated as a luxury brand on the same level as Goyard and Louis Vuitton.
