Charles and Ray Eames Furniture

American

Charles Eames and Ray Eames were the embodiment of the inventiveness, energy and optimism at the heart of mid-century modern American design, and have been recognized as the most influential designers of the 20th century. The Eameses were lovers of folk craft who had a genius for making highly original chairs, tables, case pieces and other furniture using traditional materials and forms.

As furniture designers, filmmakers, artists, textile and graphic designers and even toy and puzzle makers, the Eameses were a visionary and effective force for the notion that design should be an agent of positive change. They are the happy, ever-curious, ever-adventurous faces of modernism.

Charles Eames (1907–78) studied architecture and industrial design. Ray Eames (née Beatrice Alexandra Kaiser, 1912–88) was an artist, who studied under the Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann. They met in 1940 at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in suburban Detroit (the legendary institution where Charles also met his frequent collaborator Eero Saarinen and the artist and designer Harry Bertoia) and married the next year.

His technical skills and her artistic flair were wonderfully complementary. They moved to Los Angeles in 1941, where Charles worked on set design for MGM. In the evenings at their apartment, they experimented with molded plywood using a handmade heat-and-pressurization device they called the “Kazam!” machine. The next year, they won a contract from the U.S. Navy for lightweight plywood leg splints for wounded servicemen — vintage Eames splints are coveted collectibles today; more so those that Ray used to make sculptures.

The Navy contract allowed Charles to open a professional studio, and the attention-grabbing plywood furniture the firm produced prompted George Nelson, the director of design of the furniture-maker Herman Miller Inc., to enlist Charles and (by association, if not by contract) Ray in 1946. Some of the first Eames items to emerge from Herman Miller are now classics: the Eames chair, the LCW, or Lounge Chair Wood, and the DCM, or Dining Chair Metal, supported by tubular steel.

The Eameses eagerly embraced new technology and materials, and one of their peculiar talents was to imbue their supremely modern design with references to folk traditions.

Their Wire chair group of the 1950s, for example, was inspired by basket weaving techniques. The populist notion of “good design for all” drove their molded fiberglass chair series that same decade, and also produced the organic-form, ever-delightful La Chaise. In 1956 the Eames lounge chair and ottoman appeared — the supremely comfortable plywood-base-and-leather-upholstery creation that will likely live in homes as long as there are people with good taste and sense.

Charles Eames once said, “The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” For very good collectors and thoughtful interior designers, a piece of design by the Eameses, the closer produced to original conception the better, is almost de rigueur — for its beauty and comfort, and not least as a tribute to the creative legacy and enduring influence of Charles and Ray Eames.

The original Eames furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes chairs, tables, case pieces and other items.

Eames 670 Lounge Chair 671 Ottoman Blue Leather Walnut Rosewood Herman Miller
By Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in Topeka, KS
Fascinating vintage Eames 670 lounge chair and 671 ottoman in bright blue leather for Herman Miller. The seat frame is comprised of walnut, aluminum 5 prong base with black painted lower, and black shaft and the ottoman is comprised of a Rosewood frame, 4 prong base with black painted lower, and black shaft. This is a married set so please see NOTE below for further information. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. And this one has wear, so if you like perfect this is not the one for you. The chair frame has been oiled and all parts have been cleaned and assembled. The leather has been repaired and some buttons have been repaired with the leather from under the arms. We have supported the leather by gluing canvas to the underside as there were many scrapes and cuts in the original leather. We also mixed a matching leather coloring to use on the worn spots! It was then oiled and conditioned. The ottoman had some minor chip repairs to the Rosewood shell. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, 20th Century. NOTE: The seat, arms, back, and ottoman cushions and ottoman base are all 2nd generation determined because cushions are feather filled, wood is 5 ply rosewood, has screw on feet and not push on, and the clips match second gen clips; however, arms have only 3 upper arm screw holes which is a sign of 1st generation which makes me wonder but?? It’s a puzzle. The chair itself, wood portion and base are 5th generation determined by the walnut 7 ply frame which has a stamped date of March 29, 1999; however, the cushion clips look like 2nd generation clips…More puzzlement! This is definitely a treasure to observe, study, & love! Can we get a drum roll please…. Here it is! The chair and ottoman of a lifetime! This iconic and sought-after mid-century modern brainchild of Charles and Ray Eames was the product of years of research and development. It was first produced by Herman Miller in 1956. Even then it was considered iconic and was premiered to the public with great flourish on the NBC’s Home show while the Eames were being interviewed by Arlene Francis. It was regaled with lights and curtains and the whole nine yards! If you search online, you can find this unveiling to watch for yourself. This particular set is done in bright blue leather with button detail on the removeable seat and back, walnut frame, & black shaft. The chair has the famed 5 prong base with brushed aluminum top and black painted lower and the ottoman has a removeable cushion, 4 prong base with brushed aluminum top, black painted lower, and black shaft. We considered selling the ottoman and chair separately since the wood is unmatching however in our opinion, this set was brought together and married at some point and have probably been through a lot together over the years. We all know marriage takes commitment, so that just didn’t feel right! And besides…what’s a little “generation gap” when it comes to a good marriage? LOL… Seriously, there is something endearing about the different stages in the life of this “pair” and wanting to keep it original so it can live on for generations to come… it just adds to the charm. Not to mention we love the history held in vintage pieces. Just imagine the fun and enjoyment derived by sitting in this chair and the joy Eames’ would feel knowing they had in part provided that. See above note for specific details. This dynamic duo will look fabulous in ANY room of your home and is sure to be the topic of wonderful conversation! Charles Eames was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1907. Ray Kaiser Eames was born in Sacramento, California in 1912. They met at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and were married in 1941. They moved together to California and continued their design work they began together at Cranbrook. Eames Herman Miller Dark Cherry Round Top Table Universal Pedestal Base
By Charles and Ray Eames, Herman Miller
Located in Topeka, KS
Wonderful Eames for Herman Miller round top table with universal pedestal base and dark cherry finish. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There is a small rough spot on the tabletop edge and a small ding in its surface. We have touched up both. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, November 26, 2007. Herman Miller Magnificence!!! We have a classic vintage universal pedestal base table designed by the iconic duo of designer’s husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames to offer to you. The tabletop is round with a gorgeous dark cherry finish, and it’s mounted on the famous universal pedestal base which they designed to accommodate many different length tabletops. This one is black with an aluminum spider attachment. And, although the manufactured date on this table is 2007, it was first introduced by Charles and Ray Eames in 1961. Goes to show the genius in the design that is still sought-after over the years! And talk about versatility! It would be great in an office as a conference table, or it would be equally as fabulous in your dining or game room. And, with Eames’ system approach to design, the table breaks down for easy shipping and moving! It is a beautiful and classic table that will host many options of dining or office chairs. Yes, Eames is mid-century modern. • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2024
No, Plycraft is not the same as Eames. Plycraft is the name of an American furniture manufacturer founded in the early 1950s in Massachusetts. Eames refers to Charles and Ray Eames, two of the most celebrated furniture designers of the 20th century. After marrying in 1941, Charles and Ray moved to Los Angeles, where they established the Eames Office and eventually built their lifelong residence, the Eames House in Pacific Palisades as part of the Case Study House Program. Their designs are among Herman Miller’s most popular products of all time. Plycraft founder Paul Goldman was the company’s principal designer, but George Mulhauser and Norman Cherner were also enlisted to create furniture for the brand. On 1stDibs, shop vintage Eames furniture (and Plycraft, too).

Yes, Charles Eames chairs are comfortable. The Eameses — Charles and Ray — were fascinated by ergonomics and designed chairs with comfort in mind. The legendary mid-century modernist designer-couple famously called their Eames lounge chair and ottoman “a special refuge from the strains of modern living” and described their design as having the “warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.”

While the couple’s DCW chairs, introduced in the 1940s, prioritized ease of production and affordability of materials, the Eames lounger, which debuted in 1956, was Charles and Ray’s interpretation of luxury furniture. And to the Eameses, luxury meant, above all, comfort.
