Charlotte Perriand Sideboards

French, 1903-1999

A pioneer of modernism in France, Charlotte Perriand was one of the most influential figures in 20th-century design and architecture. In her long career, Perriand’s aesthetic grammar constantly evolved, moving from the tubular steel furniture of the Machine Age to a lyrical naturalism that is reflected in her enduring designs for chairs, sconces, daybeds and other works.

Perriand’s studies at the Ecole de L'Union Centrale de Arts Decoratifs left her enthralled by Charles-Édouard "Le Corbusier" Jeanneret and his vision of a new, rational architecture. In 1924, she joined his studio to design furniture along with Pierre Jeanneret, Corbu’s partner and cousin.

Together, they devised some of the finest examples of early modernist furniture, including two icons of the era: the B306 chaise — later renamed the LC4 —  with its swooping frame and hide upholstery; and the chunky, steel-framed Grand Confort club chair. Both pieces were part of the LC line, which saw the trio of designers carrying out bold experiments with tubular chromed steel, just as architect and Bauhaus faculty member Marcel Breuer had executed with his cantilever Cesca chair around the same time. (Furniture created by Perriand, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret was originally produced by Austrian manufacturer Thonet but Italian firm Cassina acquired the production and sales rights to their works in 1964.)

Collaborative design produced another Perriand triumph: in the early 1950s, she and Jean Prouvé were engaged to produce desks, worktables and bookcases for the University of Paris. The bookcases — slim pine shelves with brightly painted aluminum dividers — are minimalist mid-century masterpieces.

By the end of that decade, Perriand’s aesthetic had changed completely from the earliest days of her career. She produced a series of furniture in ebonized wood: chairs with gentle S-curve legs, front and back; tables with elliptical tops. In the 1960s, Perriand pushed the boundaries of prefab to produce high-quality housing and furnishings at low cost for the French ski resort Les Arcs. She also adopted an almost rustic look at the time, designing simple chairs with dowel-cut frames and rush seats.

Everything in Perriand’s oeuvre is beautiful, whether it’s the centerpiece of a décor or an accent, and her work is in every great design collection, public and private.

The vintage Charlotte Perriand furniture for sale on 1stDibs includes stools, coffee tables, case pieces, lighting and more.

Charlotte Perriand 5 Door Bloc Cabinet, C. 1958
By Charlotte Perriand
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Charlotte Perriand 5-Door ‘Bloc’ cabinet designed for Cité Cansado, Mauritania c. 1958, edited by Galerie Steph Simon. Perriand’s ‘Elements-Blocs De Rangement’ cabinets issued by Steph Simon gallery, 1958 were composed of coreboard shelves veneered with a choice of different woods, braced by black lacquered sheet metal backs and side panels to ensure absolute rigidity. The side panels were perforated to accommodate racks for shelves or patented drawers in high-impact polystyrene in red, yellow, gray, or black . The sliding doors are melamine over masonite, which was favored over plywood or aluminum as they could be moved without making a noise. Storage was a vital issue for Perriand, who believed that life was not possible without rational storage. “Create emptiness.” she wrote, “You have too many things in your homes". Her intention was to liberate space - a fundamental idea in her writings. For her, emptiness was the scope to think and move. Measurements: 99" length x 30 1/2" height x 18 1/2" depth Materials: Ribbon mahogany, lacquered metal, metal legs with inset oak feet, melamine over masonite doors. Condition: Original, untouched condition. Patina as to be expected with age (actual patina, not neglect). Wood shelves are adjustable with original metal brackets. Legs have chips and loss of lacquer as to be expected with age. These could be repainted if desired, we prefer not to do any restoration. Please refer to images and feel free to be in touch with any questions. Provenance: Cité Cansado, Mauritania; Private Collection. Literature: Jacques Barsac, Charlotte Perriand, L'œuvre complète, Vol. 3: 1956-1968...

Check out our Goldwood storefront for more Les Arcs, a 1960s ski resort in France designed by a collective of architects led by Charlotte Perriand, is celebrating its half centenary. Part of the Paradiski area, Les Arcs today is formed of four villages named for their altitude, Arc 1600, Arc 1800, Arc 2000, and Arc 1950. The first villages were built first and under Perriand, and are significant examples of 20th-century Alpine architecture. Perriand aimed to push the boundaries of prefabrication to make producing high-quality mass housing possible in the short summer building seasons. Les Arcs was built on a greenfield site, with lifts and new buildings added each year as the resort expanded. The architects also carefully preserved the existing cowherd huts that dot the slopes. The architect, then in her 60s, was at the peak of her career in 1967 when she was brought on board to lead a team of young architects tasked with turning a plot of virgin alpine pasture into a ski resort. Charlotte Perriand (24 October 1903 – 27 October 1999) was a French architect and designer. Her work aimed to create functional living spaces in the belief that better design helps in creating a better society. In her article "L'Art de Vivre" from 1981 she states "The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living — living in harmony with man's deepest drives and with his adopted or fabricated environment." Charlotte liked to take her time in space...
