A large and powerful Chinese famille rose enameled porcelain "Five Dragon" meiping vase, modern, China.
The oversized vase of traditional meiping form, with a splayed foot supporting a baluster shaped body with high shoulders, short, narrow neck, and rolled mouth rim.
The large vase decorated with five dragons molded in relief. Their bodies painted in vibrant overglaze famille rose enamels of reds, greens, yellows and turquoise.
The dragons portrayed dancing in the sky among flames and clouds. Their bodies twisting and writhing, claws extended, tails coiled, some with mouths open in triumphant roars. The main dragon in red, and portrayed to more directly face the viewer.
The dragons dance against a white ground sky. The blank sky broken up by overglaze red painted stylized clouds and flames. The foot decorated with a band of crashing waves. Chinese sancai glazed figures of Guan Yin and lion are a type of ceramic artwork that originated in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD). "Sancai" means "three colors" in Chinese, and refers to the use of three distinct colors of glaze (usually green, yellow, and white) in the creation of these figures.
Guan Yin is a Chinese bodhisattva associated with compassion and mercy, and is often depicted holding a vase of healing elixir or a willow branch. The lion, on the other hand, is a symbol of power and strength, and is often used as a guardian figure in Chinese mythology.
The combination of Guan Yin and lion in a single artwork is significant, as it represents the union of mercy and power, a common theme in Buddhist and Taoist philosophy.

Kaneshige Toyo National Treasure Signed Japanese Bizen Pottery Sake Bottle Vase

A beautiful, perfectly shaped and balanced antique Bizen ware shibui sake bottle (tokkuri) vase by renowned Japanese master potter/artist Kaneshige Toyo (1896-1967) featuring a unique natural, wonderfully textured organic forming ash glaze. Kaneshige is universally considered to be the founder of modern Bizen pottery.
In 1956, Kaneshige was certified as a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Heritage) for his work in Bizen Ware pottery/ceramics. Bizen Ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally from the Bizen province, presently a part of the Okayama prefecture. It is considered one of the Six Ancient Japanese Kilns (along with Echizen ware, Seto ware, Shigaraki ware, Tamba ware, and Tokoname ware).
The piece is signed/ sealed on the base with one of Kaneshige's traditional incised marks.
A rather striking and engaging work. One of the best Kaneshige works we have come across. Scarce and hard to find in such an excellent condition. Would be a fantastic addition to any Japanese/Asian pottery or Bizen Ware collection or eye-catching stand-alone work in about any setting.
