Located in North Hollywood, CA
Vintage traditional Regency Style Brass Door Knocker.Vintage traditional door knocker, made of solid brass, with oval cartouche.Gold polished cast brass door knocker in the Traditional Regency style.Simple lines suggest swags and rope twists on top of a large horizontal oval. The knocking arm is decorated with simple flowers. It will look excellent on your front door, or use it as a decorative paperweight.DIMENSIONS: 4ʺW × 1ʺD × 6ʺH. Door knockers are more popular in Europe, mostly in England than in any other country and can be found everywhere, even in the most remote locations.Below is the history of the door knockers. Door knockers have a long history and have been used in various cultures throughout the centuries. The exact origins of door knockers are challenging to trace, but they are believed to date back to ancient civilizations. Here's a brief overview of the history of door knockers: 1) Ancient Greece and Rome: The use of door knockers can be traced back to ancient Greece and Rome. In these civilizations, wealthy homes often had ornate metal door knockers that served both a functional and decorative purpose. These early knockers were often shaped like mythological creatures or had symbolic designs. 2) Medieval Europe: Door knockers became more prevalent in medieval Europe. During this time, they were often made of iron or brass and took on various shapes, such as animals, grotesque faces, or religious symbols. The design and material used for door knockers often indicated the status and wealth of the homeowner. 3) 17th to 19th Centuries: Door knockers continued to evolve in design and popularity during the 17th to 19th centuries. In England, for example, there was a surge in the use of decorative knockers during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Many of these designs were elaborate and reflected the fashion and artistic trends of the time. 4) Colonial America: As European settlers moved to the Americas, they brought with them the tradition of using door knockers. In colonial America, door knockers were often simpler in design, reflecting the more utilitarian style of the period. 5) 19th Century Revival: The 19th century saw a revival of interest in historical styles, including the Gothic and Renaissance periods. This influenced door knocker designs, with many reproductions and new creations inspired by earlier styles. 6) 20th Century and Beyond: In the 20th century, door knockers continued to be used, though their popularity waned with the advent of electric doorbells. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in traditional and vintage design elements...

Rare Antique American Central Oil & Gas Lighthouse 110 Stove Heater 33"
Located in Dayton, OH
A rare and impressive American Central Oil & Gas Lighthouse 110 heater. Baby boomers who grew up in Gardner may recall visits to their grandmother’s house that had a large Florence stove occupying space in the kitchen. Dating back to the 1880s, they were manufactured at the American Oil Stove Co. in Gardner, later at the Central Oil and Gas Co., and by 1924 it became Florence Stove. At one time, it held Gardner’s second largest workforce, second only to furniture manufacturer Heywood-Wakefield Co. What people may not realize is that the stove company was not named Florence for a person but rather for the place where the wickless-type kerosene burner was invented and adapted into a cooking appliance. It was in the small town of Florence, Mass. – next door to Northampton – where William H. Wilder invented the kerosene burner in 1872. The most amazing thing about the invention was that Wilder was only 17-years old when he contracted with the Florence Machine Co., which at the time was manufacturing sewing machines, to build the ranges for him. Wilder was the only man from Gardner to be elected to the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C., but before that time he formed the American Oil Stove Co. in Gardner in 1884. Joining forces with Alvin M. Greenwood and Calvin H. Hill, the men began to develop some of Wilder’s inventions to initially manufacture Florence kerosene ranges at the plant on lower School Street. In 1890, Central Oil and Gas Co. took over the business and moved the operations back to a factory in Florence. A short time later, an economic depression dubbed “the Panic of 1893” nearly wiped out Wilder, leaving him on the brink of bankruptcy. He was able to reorganize the Gardner plant by 1896 and the company soon began working on gas appliances, such as hot plates and gas burners. In no time, the business began to flourish and the local facility expanded over 10 and one-half acres of land. A disastrous fire on April 19, 1899, destroyed the main factory on School Street. Since Wilder was well connected within the community, it didn’t take long for the locals to come to his aid. In less than a week’s time, a temporary structure was fashioned helping with the manufacture of stoves. After Wilder died in 1913, his son, Solon Wilder, became president of the Central Oil and Gas Stove Co. until his death at the age of 39 in 1922. It became organized in 1924 under Joseph P. Carney, who proposed the name the Florence Stove Co. Kerosene ranges were still a major part of the business, while the company also began developing cabinet-type room heaters, wickless kerosene burners and the first “look-in” windows for the over doors of kerosene ranges. In time, Florence Stove opened production plants throughout the country in such locations as Kankakee, Ill., Newark, Ohio, and Lewisburg, Tenn. During the Depression around 1933, Florence Stove was credited with introducing the first oil and gas dual-oven combination all-steel range. The following year, the company developed the first oil-burning space heaters, which connected to home chimneys. For many years, Florence Stove in Gardner manufactured gas ranges...

Antique Garden Furniture and Architectural Elements

Choosing the right antique or vintage building and garden elements can prove pivotal when you’re working to beautify any room in your home or just put the finishing touches on a garden or other outdoor area.

It takes time and effort to improve your outdoor space or merely to bring an air of tranquility to an indoor area set aside for private relaxation or gathering with friends. The good news is that 1stDibs can help.

To introduce a sense of timelessness to a back patio or interior common area, choose cast-stone statues or sculptural busts for a dose of drama or select ornate architectural elements such as corbels, plaques or panels made of marble or iron. Elsewhere, find a focal point in your living room and create a “feature wall” by bringing pops of color into a corner with handmade antique ceramic tiles.

It helps when design changes like these have a practical upside too.

Victorian cast-iron stair treads hearken back to a time when adding decorative details to your property was a priority. While lending an attractive appearance to an exterior staircase, these safeguards render the steps slip-resistant for those coming and going. And as one good stylistic choice usually leads to another, pairing your sophisticated treads with a coupling of 19th-century hand-forged andirons would be a thoughtful, durable touch for any courtyard or comfortable lounge space, be they intended for an indoor fireplace or a patio firepit.

Where the garden is concerned, any sophisticated garden ornaments you select should work with nature, not against it. Wrought-iron garden gates will simply refuse to be relegated to the background. Instead, they’ll draw attention to your painstakingly sculpted hedges and colorful flora. When paired with a sparse arrangement of other tasteful additions, such as a stone planter, garden stool or other welcoming pieces of outdoor seating, the effect can be transformative.

On 1stDibs, find a sprawling collection of antique garden furniture and architectural elements that meet every need. Our offerings include everything from sculptural bathroom fixtures to flooring ideas to pedestals and columns designed in a variety of styles and much more.
