Huge Kaneaki Fujimori Collection Art Glass Platter Kato Kogei Japan, 1985
Located in Melbourne, AU
Just wow! A huge, gorgeously colourful Kaneaki Fujimori platter. This will display equally well standing, hanging or flat (we prefer it flat because this emphasises the generous size). We love the shocking white of the background which makes the colours pop. We love the smooth gloss of the glass. We love the slightly off-kilter and ovoid shape. It’s a total winner! Kaneaki Fujimori for Kato Kogei 1980s - a classic piece of Japanese postmodern Art Glass. Signature etched to base and original sticker also attached. Red, Green, Yellow and Black are swirled through clear glass, over a milky-white background. Delicious and punchy. Not for the faint-hearted decorator. This piece is loud and assertive. Delightful and fun, with extravagant size and a glossy smooth finish to reflect light and attract the eye. There are some natural flaws which we’ve tried to illustrate in images. These include numerous small bubbles, mots and blemishes. The images are an example, with match-head for scale. Comes with a lucite stand to raise the plate a little higher off surfaces if desired. Kaneaki Fujimori is one of Japan’s preeminent artists and designers of the 20th century. Fujimori was born in Japan in 1935, graduating college in 1956. He majored in oil painting. He travelled to the US and worked in Chicago, Illinois, as a designer for a major ceramics firm. He returned to Japan in 1963, and became a freelance designer for various companies in Nagoya. At age 19, he had won the national art award (for painting) in Japan. Many other awards followed through the 1980s. At the time of the production of this work, he was the director of Kato Kogai, a ceramics and glassware company which was a major supplier to the international market during the 1980s. Reference to his work can be found in the book ‘1950s Then and Now’ by Richard Horn, a publication from the 1980s which compares original 1950s design with new 1980s design done in the 1950s style. He is most well known outside Japan for his lively 1980s ceramics...

Small Italian Beige and Burgundy Marble Lobed Basin or Vide Poche
Located in Dallas, TX
Hand-carved in Italy during the 1900’s, this small marble lobed basin would make a great vide-poche. A vide-poche (literally “empty pocket”) is a small storage bowl for everyday items, such as car keys, loose change, wallets, etc. A marble basin of this size might have originally been used in a Catholic church as a holy water vessel. The gadrooned lobes carved along the outside give the appearance of a stylized scalloped shell. On the back of the shell is an excavated block of marble, which is how the basin would have been affixed to a wall. The beautiful beige colored marble with burgundy inclusions and white veining has been carved with a quarter round molding along the rim. A versatile item, our small Italian marble shell basin...

English Traditional Scenic Equestrian Catchall Trinket Dishes, Set of 4
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
A set of four ceramic collectible trinket dishes with painted scenes. “The Cornfield” By John Constabl 1776-1837 Like Fen Lane, which hangs to the right, this study is thought to be one of the works Constable began outdoors in Suffolk in 1817, but did not finish. It too shows Fen Lane, but from further down. When Constable was looking for a subject to work up for the 1826 Royal Academy exhibition, he turned to this canvas and from it painted the picture now known as The Cornfield (now in the National Gallery). It was probably while preparing the finished picture that he lowered the trees at the right of this earlier sketch by overpainting them with sky. (History courtesy of the Tate Organization) The original is hanging in the National Gallery London “Valley Farm” By John Constabl 1776-1837 This work shows a view of Willy Lott's House at Flatford from the River Stour. The farmer lived continuously in the same house for over eighty years and for Constable it came to represent an important part of the Suffolk landscape, a nostalgic symbol of the 'natural' way of life. The building features prominently in earlier works by Constable, including The Mill Stream...

Waves No 370, a Unique orange & celadon Handblown Glass Bowl by Neil Wilkin
Located in London, GB
'Waves No 370' is a beautifully crafted, handblown glass bowl by the British artist, Neil Wilkin. 'Waves' is a collection of beautifully crafted, unique glass bowls and centrepieces by the British artist Neil Wilkin. Taking a painterly approach, Neil Wilkin merges his colours to create a larger palette of soft hues. Utilising both transparent and opaque glass adds to the soft aesthetic of each piece adding an ethereal effect. Since graduating in 1981, Neil Wilkin has used his skills to produce exquisite, luxury glass from his workshop. Clients from every sector include individuals, interior designers, property developers, architects etc. Companies include -Thomas Goode, The Grove, Asprey, Liberty, Cunard, Disney, Grosvenor Estate and Four Seasons. His specialist restoration skills earned him coveted commissions including the ‘blanks’ for the Royal Windsor Castle fire damaged chandeliers and speciality working with international artists to make their own artworks. Is his own words: ‘As a child I wanted to be a geologist. My father introduced me to materials and science by bringing home as many different elements as he could and I remember shiny metals, black carbon and vivid yellow sulphur. The geology beneath our feet shapes and colours our environment in every way. From the rusty iron of the red Australian outback, to the sunshine on the ground which drives our weather, not least the rain in the verdant Welsh hills where the folded rocks turn everything upside down, and we have a pool at the top of the hill. It was colour and heat that first pulled me towards the furnace at college. I had gone to work with my hands as a potter, and left obsessed with fire and glass making. I just enjoy making whether building a shed or a furnace or making things grow in the garden there are not enough hours in the day to do all the making I need to do. Since Rachael (Woodman, fellow glass artist) and I started our first workshop in Bath, 1984, my making skills have developed by realising the ideas of others, and in the 'melting pot' of many visiting artists I got my fix of glassmaking and colour. Over the last 10 years I have travelled and worked with different materials and methods, but I find myself more at home back in front of the furnace. When I blow glass the colours in glass behave like layers of rock. Hard and soft, absorbing and transmitting heat just as they do light...

Antique and Vintage Bowls and Baskets

As decorative objects in your space, antique, new and vintage bowls and baskets make for a versatile addition to any corner of your living room, dining room or the console table in your foyer or entryway. Whether they’re positioned as a focal point for the family dining table or an accent on the shelving in your home office, or perhaps you’re just endeavoring to add minimalist ceramics throughout your home, an alluring art-glass centerpiece bowl or antique rustic fisherman’s basket is an easy way to elevate high-trafficked areas of your apartment or house.

Aside from the obvious functionality that a decorative bowl or basket brings to your kitchen, displaying such items behind the glass doors of a vintage storage cabinet or on your open kitchen shelving allows you to add a touch of personality and flair to the space, particularly if you’re accustomed to serving cocktails while you cook or if the kitchen is a common area for gathering and unpacking the events of the day.

As your bookcase is so much more than a place to, well, store books, adding a decorative bowl or basket — a mid-century modern work or an Art Nouveau–-era piece designed by French art-glass makers Daum — to the space where you keep your art monographs and coveted first editions can draw attention to your treasured library.

For the tranquil California coastal-style interiors you’ve worked so hard to create, fill a hand-carved wooden bowl on your console table with glass fishing floats or seashells, while a tall woven vessel by your front door can be populated with leafy green plants.

For anywhere and everywhere in your home, find a wide variety of antique or modern decorative baskets and bowls on 1stDibs today.
