Very elegant rectangular box, created in America during the art deco period back in the 1930-1940. This elegant desk box was crafted by the Poole Silver Co. with sharp lines in solid sterling silver with high polished finish. Mount in four elaborated geometric sabots and fitted in the interior with linings of natural cedar wood and a secure lid with nine barrels hinge.
Weight: 373.55 Grams, (239.46 Dwt).
Measurements: 165 mm by 89 mm x 43 mm (6.5 x 3.5 x 1.70 Inches).
Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark, the mark for the assay of the silver, the model number and signed, "STERLING BY POOLE 78".
Poole Silver Co.
The Poole Silver Company was formed in 1892 by George Poole and Edward Roche in Taunton as Poole, Roche & Co., then established as a corporation on May 21, 1895. They was in the beginning manufacturer of plated silverware and manufacturer of silver products made with electroplating techniques. In 1900 it operated in a small two-room factory at 106 Whittington Street, and later moved to 320 Whittington Street. From 1946 the firm began to produce sterling silver flatware, hollowware, and cutlery. Later, Poole bought the full control and managed the company until his death. Poole was succeed by his three sons until 1946, when they retired and sold the company to a group headed by Sidney A. Kane. This superb elegant round box is closely to mint condition, is very rare and was carefully crafted at the Louis Kuppenheim workshop in solid .935/.999 silver, with gilt interiors and a mirror. Exceptional workmanship as you expect of the workshop of Louis Kuppenheim, with remarkable enameled patterns of peacocks feathers on both faces. Embellished around with white enamel frames and the borders with incised and carved panels with flowers.

Louis Kuppenheim Company
The company was grounded in 1854 by Louis Kuppenheim (1824-1889) and Heinrich Witzenmann, specialized in silver and gold and enameled artefacts. On the World Exhibition in 1900 the firm received a gold medal for a letter opener. In that same year the company opened a branch in the Rue Richelieu 67 in Paris. In these years some designs by Hans Christiansen were executed, amongst them very delicately enameled silver cigarette cases. The enamels on the several silver and gold pieces was of very high standard, and sometimes even gems like rubies were applied. Very famous were the ladies silver vanity cases with cute animals like cats and monkeys...

Antique, vintage and new decorative boxes will safely store items while adding a splash of color or texture to a corner in any room. They have had a range of purposes over the years — from trinkets to serving as useful receptacles, such as snuff boxes, jewelry boxes and more. Boxes have also been designed in a range of forms and styles.
Box making is a craft dating back thousands of years. Early boxes as decorative objects were regularly designed and decorated both inside and out, ranging from minimal looks to more flashy styles. Decorative boxes have been constructed from different materials, with wood and metal being the most common. Silk, paper and velvet frequently enhanced these boxes’ interiors.
