Wedgwood Framed Prince of Wales Black Basalt Portrait

About the Item

A stunning and very finely produced antique Georgian framed black basalt portrait bust titled Prince of Wales by Wedgwood and dating from around 1780. The framed bust of oval shape is mounted in a period brass frame with swivel hanging loop and portrays a side profile of the prince in deep relief and with incredible detail and definition. The bust is cast in black basalt and is impressed FR. PR. OF WALES to the back along with an impressed WEDGWOOD mark. An original period example in very good condition with wear associated with age and use. Provenance: From the private collection of a Cambridge Academic, acquired from the UK Art Market

A finely made English Georgian later silver mounted black basalt teapot decorated with classical winged cherub designs to either side and dating from around 1810. The teapot has a decagon shaped body with a large raised loop pouring handle with thumb rest and with a straight angled spout mounted with a silver end. The teapot has a raised castellated rim molded in low relief with leaf patterning repeated to the panels forming the body of the teapot with either side with a low relief winged cherub design one with an arrow and pedestal and the other leaning against a tree. An important homage to love, this large black basalt figure is an impressive example of Wedgwood's artistry and imagination. Cupid, the ancient Roman god of love, is standing amongst billowing clouds with a pair of doves at his feet. Gazing towards earth with one hand shielding his eyes, the other hand holds an arrow.
