Rare French Antique Bronze Sculpture “Lion Assis no.2” after Antoine-Louis Barye
By Antoine-Louis Barye
Located in Shippensburg, PA
ANTOINE-LOUIS BARYE French, 1796-1875 "Lion Assis no. 2" Patinated bronze Signed in cast "BARYE" Item # 109YHP24E Initially modeled by Barye in 1846 as a commission by Louis-Phillipe for the Tuilleries Gardens at a cost of 10,000 francs, the life-size sculpture sat near to Barye's Lion au Serpent until it was later moved in 1867 to the grand entrance to Pavilion de Flore and a pair was crafted for it using a mechanical technique, a gesture which incensed Barye, as he preferred to sculpt a mate to oppose Lion Assis but the government refused on the basis of the high cost. There are similarities between Lion Assis and Barye's Lion of the July Column, both beasts with notable similarity in the multiple layers of their manes and the quiet repose and powerful presence of the motionless Lion Assis is a natural development over his violent clashing group of Lion au Serpent from thirteen years prior. Version no. 1 was first offered in Barye's 1847 catalogue as no. 99 and due to the popularity of the sculpture it was cast in four different editions with varying dimensions. Lion Assis no. 2 was originally set over two base types: the more rare naturalistic base seen in the present model and the more common molded base (which incidentally also gives that variation some additional height). It was cast posthumously by Auguste Delafontaine, Hector Brame, Colin, Barbedienne and Graech-Marly. The same model and the original plaster and wax are held in the permanent collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (acc. no. 2007.70 & 71). The present model is an early posthumous cast with a richly textured surface and exquisite detail finished in an overall dark brown patina with hints of reddish undertones; the surface is silky and translucent. Artist Listings & Bibliography: *Barye: Catalogue raisonné des sculptures, Polleti & Richarme, 2000, p. 182, cat. A57, ill. 143 *The Founders and Editors of the Barye Bronzes, Reinis, 2007, see p. 85-88 for discussion of Delafontaine and their role in casting Lion Assis (fig. 50), see p. 79-80 (fig. 25) for discussion of Ancienne Maison Colin...

A delightful late 19th century animalier bronze group of a family of resting deer including alert Stag and resting Doe & Faun. The subject modelled with wonderful intuition and skill. The surface has a rich green patination and excellent hand chased detail. Raised on a stepped bronze base, signed Barye and inscribed F Barbedienne Fondeur. Additional information Height: 22 cm Width: 25 cm Depth: 14 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition Foundry: Barbedienne Circa: 1870 Materials: Bronze Book Ref BARYE Catalogue Raisonne des Sculptures by Michel Poletti – Alain Richarme Page no. 301 Description Antoine Louis Barye “The Michelangelo of the Menagerie” These are the words of Théophile Gautier in praise of Barye’s genius. Throughout his life Barye endeavoured to capture the fundamental nature of the animal kingdom in all its diversity, wild or tame, exotic or familiar, cruel or gentle, bringing to life the roaring, trembling, living beasts. The son of a goldsmith, apprenticed to a steel engraver at a young age, Barye found himself making moulds for ornaments, acquiring knowledge that he would later build on to produce his exquisitely chased bronzes. When he was called up at seventeen, he joined the army’s topographic brigade where he used clay to model raised relief maps...

“Putto on Doe” Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture by Charles Korschann
By Charles Korschann
Located in Shippensburg, PA
CHARLES KORSCHANN Czech, 1872-1943 Putto Riding a Doe Medium-brown patinated bronze over an original marble base Signed "CH. KORRSCHANN." and sealed with foundry cachet for Louchet Item # 301LCJ14L A very fine lifetime casting of Charles Korschann's Putto Riding a Doe, the model is steeped in the elements of the Art Nouveau with a distinct celebration of the naturalistic. The putto grasps a simple harp in his hand while a loose garment bound in a belt encircling his waist billows in the unseen wind. The doe looks on with disinterest, unconcerned about its surroundings and almost at one with its rider. It is a carefully composed idealization of the natural world and the potential for harmony between man and beast. The casting is exquisite, typical of work from Louchet, and is finished in a medium-brown translucent patina. Charles Korschann Born in Brno, Monrovia in 1872 as Charles Korschmann, later dropping the "m" to appear less Germanic, he studied at the fine arts academies of Vienna, Berlin and Paris before finally establishing himself in Paris in 1894. He spent his entire career working in Paris, exhibiting at the 1900 Exposition Universelle where he was awarded a Bronze Medal and from 1894 through 1905 at the Société des Artistes Français. His work is very distinctive and immediately recognizable, a most important trait as an artist and a particular accomplishment in light of the output of his contemporaries. He was to sculpture what Alphonse Mucha was to graphics, both men originating from the same province in Czechoslovakia and having similar influences in Paris. It is rather fitting that he would execute a bust of Alphonse Mucha for the Museum of Brno in honor of his accomplishments. Artist Listings...

By Charles Korschann
Located in London, GB
A very beautiful late 19th Century French Art Nouveau bronze vase decorated with two gilt bronze female figures sitting upon a tree stump. The surface of the vase with excellent detail and very fine colour, signed Korschann and with foundry mark for Louchet Paris Additional information Height: 15 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition Circa: 1900 Materials: Bronze Foundry: Louchet Paris About Charles Korschann Biography Charles Korschann (1872-1943). Born in Brno in Moravia, he attended the Fine Arts Academies in Vienna and Berlin. Although he frequently returned to Moravia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire but a constituent part of Czecho-Slovakia after the First World War, he spent most of his life after 1894 in Paris. He designed many small mostly Art Nouveau subjects including vases, inkwells, clocks, lamps, wall sconces, and jardinières among those with some utility, often with full figures of elegant women, nearly always with hieratic expressions or Symbolist poses. He exhibited at the Salons of the Société des Artistes Français from 1894 to 1905, and was awarded a Bronze Medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. He worked with gilt and patinated bronze, bronze with polychrome glazed and unglazed ceramics...

Imposing 19th Century Bronze Torchere, by Coutan
Located in Brighton, Sussex
This very fine patinated bronze figural torchere modeled as a classically clad female musician holding a mandolin and a marble torch. This symbolic representation of Music, falls within Coutan’s allegorical work. We have a number of marble pedestals this Torchere would stand on. Inscribed on base: Coutan, Thiébaut Frères, Fondeurs. Jules-Félix Coutan (22 September 1848 – 23 February 1939) is considered to be one of the most gifted French sculptors and designers of the 19th and early 20th centuries Coutan studied under the renowned Pierre-Jules Cavelier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1872; after his return to Paris he executed the fountain group France Bearing the Torch of Civilization for the Exposition Universelle (1889), one of the two prominent sculptural commissions for the Exposition grounds.[1] Later he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1900, where he expressed his disdain for the researches of Rodin— fumiste—[2] and the Impressionist sculptors who followed him. Coutan was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905.[3] Coutan is best known in the United States for the sculptural group above the entrance to Grand Central Terminal in New York City. For Grand Central Terminal, Coutan was contracted to provide a quarter-size scale plaster model of the three-figure allegorical Transportation group, which he developed from 1911 through 1914. The carving was performed by the William Bradley & Son of Long Island City.[4] Among Coutan's students were Hippolyte Lefèbvre, Raymond...
