Period: Early 19th Century
Late 19th Century Animalier Sculpture entitled "Terrier" by Alfred Dubucand
Located in London, GB
A wonderful late 19th Century Animalier bronze study of a standing terrier with its head raised and ears pricked in an alert position with excellent rich brown autumnal patina and fine hand chased surface detail, signed Dubucand ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Height: 11 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition Circa: 1880 Materials: Bronze Book reference: Animals in Bronze by Christopher Payne SKU: 9206 ABOUT Dubucand Terrier Alfred Dubucand (25 November 1828 – 1894) Dubucand was born in Paris and was a French animalier sculptor of the 19th century. His works were often entered into the annual Salon art exhibition in Paris where he contributed works over the course of his career. He was one of the prize pupils of Antoine-Louis Barye. Dubucand made his debut at the 1867 Salon with a wax model of a dead pheasant, a rather inauspicious start when considering the higher quality sculptures he would submit later in his career. He modelled mainly animal groups, producing a number of deer, dog, and horse sculptures. His better casts feature a warm, mid-brown patination, sometimes coming in even lighter shades bordering on a very light yellow, being nearly the colour of the bronze metal itself. He frequently experimented with chemical patinas, learning the patination process from his teacher and mentor Barye who stretched the boundary with his now famous dark green patinas. Dubucand paid strict attention to the anatomical detail of his subjects, often being so concise that he actually showed the veins in the legs of his deer and elk...

This is set on a turned socle and square plinth which in turn is raised on a curved simulated marble pedestal, with two recumbent lions above superb quality borders of classical motifs and flowerhead arabesques. The reverse states ‘Wellington L. Gahagan Fecit & Pub’d June 12. 1811’. Height: 22in (56 cm) Width: 25in (63 cm) Depth: 11in (28cm) Provenance: Major Hon Denis Gomer Berry and Lady Pamela Wellesley Berry Richard Gomer Berry, 3rd Viscount Kemsley Lawrence Gahagan (1735-1820) was born in Dublin to a family of talented stone masons and sculptors. Early Meissen Rococo Group 'Love and Indulgence' by J.C. Schönheit, Ca 1840
Located in Vienna, AT
Exceptional Meissen porcelain genre group: Young mother seated on a magnificent Louis XVI-style armchair, her left foot set down on a low stool, a boy lying on his stomach on her left thigh, his white shirt slipped up to reveal his bare buttocks, which the mother has probably just struck with the cane in her left hand, to her right a girl in a dress and hat decorated with feathers, clasping her mother's arm so that she can no longer strike the boy. The group is based on an oval pedestal with gold heightened frieze decoration on the sides. Particularly elaborate, detailed design and staffage. This model was based on drawings by Johann Eleazar Zeissig, known as 'Schenau' (1737-1806). Designed by JOHANN CARL SCHÖNHEIT (1730 - 1805) in 1788 started working as an apprentice in the Meissen factory in 1741 and has been in a responsible position since 1768. For more than 20 years, Schönheit was an employee of both J.J. Kändler as well as from M.V. Acier, who entered the Meissen factory in 1762. After Kändler's death in 1775, Schönheit was head of the model department until 1794. Design of the model in 1788 Manufactory: Meissen Germany Dating: made around 1840 Material: white porcelain, glossy finish Technique: handmade porcelain, finest hand painting Dimensions: height: 25,5 cm / 10.03 in width: 18,0 cm / 7.08 in depth: 16,0 cm / 6.29 in Marks: Blue Meissen crossed sword mark Model number: I 66 / former's number 35 / painter Da.. Austrian Cold-Painted Art Deco Bronze Entitled "Shy Maiden" by Josef Adolph
By Joseph Adolph
Located in London, GB
A fabulous cold painted Art Deco bronze figure of a naked beauty in a revealing pose with very fine colour and excellent detail, raised on an onyx base and signed Adolph Additional information Height: 27 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition Circa: 1930 Materials: cold painted bronze & onyx SKU: 7692 ABOUT Josef Adolph Josef Adolph ~ Austrian, created many small figural models in the Art Deco period around 1910-1939. Typical for Adolph and at the same time characteristic of the Art Deco era, was the depiction of the concept of modern life - in particular, that of the “modern woman” in rhythmic, sensual and aerodynamic poses taken from the new forms of dance, for which there was a lot of enthusiasm at that time. The Art Deco Period: although Art Deco derives its name from the great 1925 Paris Exhibition, ‘L’Exposition Internatlionale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes’, the term is now generally applied to the typical artistic productions of the 1920’s and 1930’s. It might best be characterised as an attempt to unite arts with industry, embracing the machine age and repudiating the old antithesis of ‘Fine’ and ‘Industrial’ art. The sources of the Art Deco movement include Egyptian and Mayan Art, Cubisim, Fauvism and Expressionism, heavily influencing the chief force underlying all Art Deco...
