About the Item

A truly refined example of midcentury Italian ceramic design, this Raymor-imported bud vase features a sculptural pillow-form body with a narrow, accentuated neck—perfectly scaled for a single stem or as a standalone decorative object. On either side, a pair of framed abstract compositions offer a compelling balance of geometry and expressive brushwork, echoing the energy and experimentation of Italian postwar art. Imported by Raymor, the influential American design company headed by Irving Richards, this piece is part of a legacy that helped define modern taste in the United States. From the 1940s through the 1970s, Raymor built a global design bridge, curating objects from European—particularly Italian—makers and introducing American consumers to avant-garde, yet accessible modern design. Their carefully selected offerings appeared everywhere from high-end department stores to museum exhibitions. This vase also reflects the vitality of Italian ceramics in the postwar period, a time when artists and designers were reimagining craft through the lens of modernism. Influenced by architectural theory, the international art scene, and design publications like Domus, Italian ceramicists explored new shapes, glazes, and iconographies. The result was a body of work that was both deeply rooted in tradition and boldly forward-looking—objects like this that blended utility with sculptural presence. Perfect in a curated bookshelf arrangement, atop a modernist sideboard, or in a minimalist display, this bud vase captures the soul of midcentury Italian modernism in a compact, powerful form. A rare and beautifully preserved example from the golden age of Raymor’s international design narrative.
