Unique Birger Kaipiainen Ceramic Plate in Luster Blues & Red with Beeds, Arabia
Located in Helsinki, FI
Birger Kaipiainen (1915-1988) was the master of decorative ceramics at the Arabia factory in Finland. He was well known for his ornamental dishes that were rich, colourful and with themes from the fantasy world and fairytales, which actually fought against the idealism of the minimalistic movements in 1950s. Kaipiainen introduced ceramic beads to his art in the 60s' and the surface of the object became more important for Kaipianen´s art. This beautiful unique ceramic plate...

Georgian Davenport Very Large Plate ironstone in Stork Pattern No 24, Circa 1815
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a finely hand painted large and rare early Stone China (Ironstone) plate / stand or platter which dates to the George 111 period, circa 1815. Made by the DAVENPORT factory of Longport, Staffordshire Potteries, England. The plate is very well potted with a slightly raised central circular section. This plate is beautifully hand painted in a pattern called "Stork", which is pattern number 24 and one of Davenport's very few Chinoiserie patterns. This bold pattern features polychrome enamels with a stork, chrysanthemum and peony in an oriental garden. There are under-glaze blue transfers in under-glaze cobalt blue, with orange, pink, and brown over-glaze enamels. The pattern is embellished with excellent hand gilding. This pattern is a match to the Ralph & James Clews pattern called " Crane in Chinese Garden". A photo of the Clews plate in this pattern is on page 142 of Griselda Lewis' "A Collector's History of English Pottery". The mark on the base of the Plate or Platter is Godden's 1183, a blue printed DAVENPORT STONE CHINA...

Ken Edwards Set of 4 Vintage Sun Face Coasters Tonala Mexico Art Pottery, Set 1
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Set of 4 vintage coasters is hand painted with Sun Face decor; each face is unique, with its own expression. Minimal color palette enhances the subtle variations between the pieces. We have 2 sets of coasters at the time of the listing; the decision was made to list them separately (set 1 and set 2) due to uniqueness of the facial art. The coasters are clearly signed by the artist on the bottom. Ken Edwards was born in the USA, educated in the Arts in Kansas City, Missouri and studied his art in Japan. In the 1960's Ken Edwards migrated to the crafts village of Tonala, in Central Mexico, where he and Jorge...

Georgian Coalport Porcelain Coffee Can Hand Gilded Pattern, English circa 1807
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a good quality coffee can that we attribute to the Coalport Porcelain works, Shropshire, England, made during the John Rose period of the George 111rd years, circa 1805-1810. The coffee can is nominally parallel, tapering slightly to the base, with a simple loop handle with one lower kink and pointed attachments. It has a shallow foot recess with obtuse corner and is unmarked to the base. The pattern is beautifully hand painted in an all gold gilt floral upper border pattern with further gilding on the body above the base rim, around the upper rim and to the outer handle. We date this piece to the late George third...

Set of Five Georgian Mason's Ironstone Desert Plates Basket Japan Ptn, Ca 1818
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a good set of five early desert plates, all in the Basket Japan pattern, made by Mason's Ironstone, Lane Delph, England and dating to circa 1815-1820. The plates are well potted with a circular shape, a moulded rim and sit on a low foot. The pattern is hand painted with typical bold enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange and salmon, all in varying shades, over an under-glaze transfer printed outline. Antique and Vintage Ceramics for Sale: Shop Figurines, Vases and Scandinavian Pottery on 1stDibs

Whether you’re adding an eye-catching mid-century modern glazed stoneware bowl to your dining table or grouping a collection of decorative plates by color for the shelving in your living room, decorating and entertaining with antique and vintage ceramics is a great way to introduce provocative pops of colors and textures to a space or family meals.

Ceramics, which includes pottery such as earthenware and stoneware, has had meaningful functional value in civilizations all over the world for thousands of years. When people began to populate permanent settlements during the Neolithic era, which saw the rapid growth of agriculture and farming, clay-based ceramics were fired in underground kilns and played a greater role as important containers for dry goods, water, art objects and more.

Today, if an Art Deco floor vase, adorned in bright polychrome glazed colors with flowers and geometric patterns, isn’t your speed, maybe minimalist ceramics can help you design a room that’s both timeless and of the moment. Mixing and matching can invite conversation and bring spirited contrasts to your outdoor dining area. The natural-world details enameled on an Art Nouveau vase might pair well with the sleek simplicity of a modern serving bowl, for example.

In your kitchen, your cabinets are likely filled with ceramic dinner plates. You’re probably serving daily meals on stoneware dishes or durable sets of porcelain or bone china, while decorative ceramic dishes may be on display in your dining room. Perhaps you’ve anchored a group of smaller pottery pieces on your mantelpiece with some taller vases and vessels, or a console table in your living room is home to an earthenware bowl with a decorative seasonal collection of leaves, greenery and acorns.

Regardless of your tastes, however, it’s possible that ceramics are already in use all over your home and outdoor space. If not, why? Whatever your needs may be, find a wide range of antique and vintage ceramics on 1stDibs.
