An exceptional, fine and impressive, rare antique German silver quart tankard; an addition to our range of collectable 17th century silverware This exceptional antique German silver tankard has a plain tapering cylindrical form onto a circular shaped domed foot. The surface of this antique tankard is embellished with impressive partial gilt chased scrolling decoration accented with central fruit and floral sprays in addition to undulating leaf designs, all on a matte background. The upper rim of this lady's tankard is encompassed with an applied moulded border. This rare silver tankard retains the original domed cover encircled with further chased scrolling ornamentation, reflecting that of the body and features a cast figural thumbpiece. A beautiful example of a period Louis XVI chaudron, or cauldron, the copper has been decorated with a metalworking technique known as repousse, where low relief motifs are hammered from the reverse side. This intriguing sterling silver cup features the shell of a coconut mounted into exquisite silver. A sublime example of elegant Georgian design, the cup features delicate scalloped edging as its singular motif. It is extraordinary to find such a beautiful example of this lost art, exhibiting a rare combination of classical beauty and exotic charm. The use of rare and exotic materials such as the coconut became popular across Europe during the Middle Ages, when it was believed that these unique materials from distant lands possessed mystical powers. It was held that they could detect, and even deter, the effects of poison and as such were employed as drinking vessels, often mounted with ornate embellishments of silver. As more trade routes opened up during the 16th century, materials such as the coconut became more widely available, though still only afforded to the wealthy minority in Europe and England. And, while they eventually lost their appeal for their magical powers, coconuts proved an ideal material for cups and pots and retained their popularity as such. A rare George III Neo Classical urn Pocket Nutmeg Grater made in Birmingham circa 1795 by Samuel Pemberton. The Nutmeg Grater is realistically modelled as a Neo Classical urn and is decorated with reeded bands and a band of fine beading on the domed, pull-off, cover. Once the cover is removed the silver rimmed steel grater is shown, which is also removable. The Grater is in excellent condition and is marked in the cover with SP for Samuel Pemberton of Birmingham. This antique Georgian sterling silver sweetmeat basket has an oval navette form onto a collet foot. The body of this sterling silver basket is embellished with a band of pierced decorated vertical pales accented with four foliate motifs. The basket is further ornamented with two bands of pierced evolute scrolling decoration with a scallop and circular motif decorated border.
