Antique Silver Plated Entree Dish Asprey London 19th Century
By Charles & George Asprey
Located in London, GB
This is an exquisite and rare antique English silver plated entree dish by the world renowned retailser Asprey, of London circa 1870 in date. The entree dish features a square shaped body with elegant fluted decoration to the dish, lid and handle.   In excellent condition, this wonderful entree dish is  ready to grace your dining table.  Condition: In excellent condition. As an antique items, the piece shows signs of use commensurate with age, these minor condition issues are mentioned for accuracy and, as seen in the accompanying photographs, it displays beautifully. Dimensions in cm: Height 16 cm x Width 26 cm x Depth 26 cm Dimensions in inches: Height 6 inches x Width 10 inches x Depth 10 inches Asprey was established in England in  1781 and founded as a silk printing business by William Asprey, it soon became a luxury emporium. In 1841, William Asprey's elder son Charles went into partnership with a stationer located on London's Bond Street. In 1847 the family broke with this partner and moved into 167 New Bond Street, the premises Asprey occupies today. From its central London location Asprey advertised 'articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.' An early speciality was dressing cases. Asprey crafted traditional cases and designs, mostly in leather, suitable for the new style of travel ushered in by railways. The main competitors at the time were H.J. Cave & Sons. Asprey was recognised for its expertise when it won a gold medal for its dressing cases at the International Exhibition of 1862 but lost out to its rivals, H.J. Cave & Sons in 1867. The company consolidated its position through acquisitions. In 1859 Asprey absorbed Edwards, an award winning maker of dressing cases and holder of a Royal Warrant. The company also purchased the Alfred Club at 22 Albemarle Street, which backed on to the New Bond Street store and meant that Asprey now had entrances on two of London's most fashionable streets. In 1862, Asprey was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria. The Prince of Wales, later to be crowned Edward VII, granted another Royal Warrant. In 1953, for the coronation of Elizabeth II, Asprey paid homage with the Asprey Coronation Year Gold Collection, which featured a dessert, coffee and liqueur service in 18-carat gold and weighed almost 27 pounds. In April 1953, it went on show in the New Bond Street store and subsequently toured the United States. As the business grew, the company acquired manufacturing facilities and hired silversmiths, goldsmiths, jewellers and watchmakers including Ernest Betjeman, the father of the distinguished poet John Betjeman, one of the most highly regarded craftsman and designers of his day. In the twenties, commissions poured in from around the world, from American millionaire J. Pierpont Morgan to potentates such as the Maharaja of Patiala, who commissioned a huge teak travelling trunk for each of his wives in which each trunk was fitted with solid silver washing and bathing utensils with waterspouts of ornate tiger head and lined with blue velvet. Asprey cigarette cases...

Copeland Set of 8 plates, Reticulated, Sublime Flowers by Greatbatch, 1848
By Copeland
Located in London, GB
This is a stunning set of 8 reticulated plates made by Copeland in 1848. Each plate is decorated with a unique sublimely painted flower arrangement by the artist Greatbatch. We have a second set of 8 of these plates available, as well as a few separate ones; please see separate listings. The Copeland factory was the third iteration of the famous Spode factory, after the "Copeland & Garrett" period which transitioned into the "Copeland" period in about 1833. The Spode/Copeland factory was one of the most prominent potteries right from the start of English porcelain production in the late 1700s to the demise of the industry in the 1960s and ultimate closure in the early 21st Century. In fact it was the founder Josiah Spode who was responsible for the recipe for bone china that made English china production so successful in the two centuries to come. Throughout all the changes, their items have always remained of exceptionally high quality and many of the designs have become iconic. These plates were potted in fine white bone china, the rims meticulously reticulated in the "Gothic" shape. Reticulation was very time consuming and difficult, and just this detail would have made these plates expensive. The sublimely painted flower arrangements in the centre were done by Greatbatch, one of the well-known floral artists working for Copeland. Greatbatch was active between 1845 and 1860, and worked together with his brother R. Greatbatch, who was a talented gilder. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. These plates would have belonged to a sublimely expensive dessert service. They are all stamped with the small blue Copeland mark with interlocking C's, and painted in red with the pattern number 7913, dating it at the year 1848. Documentation: A plate of this service is shown on page 80 of Steven Smith's "Spode & Copeland: Over Two Hundred Years of Fine China and Porcelain...

Set of Four Gaudy Dutch 'War Bonnet ' Pattern Plates
By Staffordshire
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Four Gaudy Dutch 'War Bonnet' Pattern Plates 8.25 inches in diameter The 'War Bonnet' pattern was produced between 1810 and 1850 in England, primarily in the Staffordshire region. These plates were made for the American market, where they gained popularity among the Pennsylvania Dutch. The term 'War Bonnet' likely refers to the central design motif, which resembles a Native American war bonnet, reflecting early American cultural influences. A "war bonnet" refers to a traditional headdress worn by some Native American tribes, most notably the Plains Indians such as the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Crow. These headdresses are often made of feathers (typically eagle feathers), beads, and other decorative elements, and they carry deep cultural, spiritual, and symbolic significance. The significance of the War Bonnet Symbol of Honor: War bonnets were worn by respected leaders, warriors, and elders who had earned them through acts of bravery, leadership, or service to their community. Spiritual Importance: The feathers, especially eagle feathers, are considered sacred and represent a connection to the spiritual world. Ceremonial Use: War bonnets were used in various ceremonies, dances, and important cultural events rather than for everyday wear. Status and Achievement: Each feather in a war bonnet was typically earned for a specific act of courage or accomplishment. The 'War Bonnet' pattern features a central design resembling a feathered headdress or floral basket, surrounded by vibrant floral elements. Color Palette: Common colors include cobalt blue, iron red, and green, with occasional yellow highlights. These colors were applied using overglaze enamels. Like other Gaudy Dutch patterns...

English Pearlware Coffee Pot, Blue Transferware, Fallow Deer in Snow, 1800-1820
Located in London, GB
This is a superb coffee pot made in England between 1800 and 1825. The pot is made of pearlware and has a very charming blue transfer printed pattern of fallow deer in a snowy landscape with farm buildings. This transfer print looks like an early 19thC print; as we couldn't identify the maker it was impossible to date it exactly. A charming detail is that the rim of the cover and the footrim, which are printed with a row of houses, both are printed up side down; this was probably done by children, who often did the smaller transfer prints because their little fingers could handle the thin strips of paper better than adults. The coffeepot is unmarked. There is an old shop label on the underside stating it is "English, probably Spode" - however, although this pot is certainly English, it is certainly not Spode. CONDITION REPORT The coffee pot is in good antique and usable condition without any damage to the pot or the spout; there are just some chips off the lower rim of the cover, which are not visible when in position and are inconsequential for using the pot. As is normal for antique pearlware...
