About the Item

A fine pair art nouveau Doulton Lambeth art pottery handled ewers decorated with floral and scroll designs possibly by renowned artist John Broad and dating from the early 20th century. The elegantly shaped stoneware ewers stand raised on a narrow round unglazed pedestal foot and are of round bulbous shape with narrow pinched neck and round flared top with a shaped pouring spout. A loop handle raises from the top edge and rests on the upper body of the ewer. The ewers are decorated with a tube lined scroll and floral border around the upper and lower body with the section in-between finely incised with a repeat swirl pattern decorated with a natural salt glazed finish with mottled blue glazes applied to the upper and lower sections of the ewers with mottled green glazes to the inner spouts. A brown glazed finish is applied around the foot rim and the raised borders are picked out in light blue, yellow and white. Both ewers have impressed makers marks, and both have matching numbers 8290. One ewer has an incised JB monogram which we believe might be for John Broad while the other has an unidentified artist mark RM. A stunning pair of ewers which look fabulous when displayed. Offered in good condition with usual signs of wear associated to age and use. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market
