Dresden porcelain - A King's Obsession
In the early 1700s, King Augustus II, prince elector of Saxony, held goldsmith Johann Bottger prisoner and commissioned him to create gold. Bottger instead discovered the method of creating porcelain, a favored and valuable item in the king's eyes.
The king announced to Europe in 1710 that he would open a porcelain manufactory in Dresden. He instead opened one at nearby Albrechtsburg castle. Espionage was rampant, and the king guarded his porcelain secret, even though it meant imprisoning workers within the castle walls.
By 1720, the secret was leaked and porcelain producers popped up in Vienna and Venice. Dresden porcelain adopted Saxon crossed swords in under-glaze blue as its distinguishing mark.
In 1736, the porcelain manufactory produced the "Swan Service...

Rare 18th C. Meissen Sleigh w/ Court Jesters Fröhlich & Schmiedel, After Kändler
By Meissen Porcelain, J.J. Kändler
Located in New York, NY
A Rare 18th-Century Meissen Porcelain Horse-Drawn Sleigh Group Featuring the Court Jesters Joseph Fröhlich and Gottfried Schmiedel, After a Model by Johann Joachim Kändler. This finely modeled and painted Meissen porcelain group, created circa 1750, captures a dynamic and theatrical sleigh ride featuring the court jesters Fröhlich and Schmiedel. The composition is anchored by a galloping white horse adorned with a blue cloth draped over its back, trimmed with gilt tassels. The harness, with delicate chains, connects the horse to an elaborately detailed sleigh with scrolling gilt accents and openwork elements. The sleigh glides over a textured, snow-covered base, sculpted to mimic the uneven terrain.
At the center of this lively scene, Fröhlich, dressed in vibrant carnival attire with a green hat and yellow cape, stands on the runners of the sleigh, leaning forward to embrace and steal a kiss from Countess Friesen. However, the "Countess" is, in fact, Schmiedel in disguise, adding to the humor of the piece. Schmiedel wears a floral-patterned gown with intricate hand-painted blooms in shades of purple, yellow, and red, complemented by a white apron and a red bonnet. The finely painted facial features capture the moment's theatricality, as Schmiedel grips the reins while seemingly playing along with the jest. In front of them, a small monkey with wings sits perched at the sleigh’s edge, holding a dish with two burning hearts, reinforcing the amorous and playful nature of the composition.
The back of the base bears the Meissen underglaze blue crossed swords mark, confirming its origin at the renowned German porcelain manufacturer. The model was first created by Johann Joachim Kändler in 1741, during his tenure as Meissen’s chief modeler. Kändler’s ability to animate porcelain figures with expressive gestures and dynamic movement is evident in this work, reflecting the theatrical influences of the period.
Meissen, established in the early 1700s under the patronage of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, was the first European porcelain manufacturer to successfully produce hard-paste porcelain. The factory became synonymous with innovation, refinement, and technical excellence, with Kändler playing a key role in developing its sculptural traditions. Meissen’s 18th...

Meissen Porcelain Rare Rose Broth Cups Service and Embossed Decorations 12 Cups
By Meissen Porcelain
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects.
Rare porcelain soup service by Meissen in Biedermeier style; the set consists of 12 cups with two handles and saucer; the various pieces are made of fine white hard porcelain hand-painted with the decoration "Pink Roses" enriched on all items with sumptuous decorations in relief not painted. Unlike the simple and quite common "Pink Roses", this model is very rare, prestigious, and sought after, therefore even more expensive; in fact, the objects with this relief decoration, much more particular and detailed than others, were fired three times, while those with only the "Pink Roses" decoration only twice. Moreover, the execution of this ornamental motif with delicate and graceful flowers was entrusted only to the most experienced and skilled painters, those in possession of the prestigious diploma obtained at the "School of Drawing of Meissen" established since 1764. Through the years, Meissen has perfected its hard-paste products with high-temperature firing during its glazing. Meissen's porcelain patterns have been copied by many other manufacturers around the world such as Royal Copenhagen, Dresden, Herend, and many others, but Meissen's porcelain glaze maintains its quality over time and is superior to all (plates will not scratch with prolonged use of cutlery!).
