Art Nouveau Nude Decorated Lidded Porcelain Jar, Limoges, French, Circa 1905
Located in Incline Village, NV
Uniquely decorated porcelain Limoges jar with a wide winged span nude woman and a duck flying out of her hair, perhaps beckoning her to join in the flight. Her legs and feet end as one "a la mermaid". She is quite beautiful and is holding a bouquet of flowers in front of her. The same image appears on the other side. She is hand painted with brown hair, skin tones, with white and black detail to the "butterfly like" double wings. The duck is painted brown and black. Two gold leaf bands circumvents the vessel at the bottom and two thirds up. A blue band above the gold band at the base completes the hand painted decoration of the exterior. The interior of the jar is painted a light colored lime green. The underneath is clearly marked "P L Limoges...

Late 18th Century Dagoty French Porcelain Plate Cobalt Blue Children Playing
Located in Katonah, NY
We are pleased to offer this extraordinary Dagoty porcelain plate showing children playing. The happy children are joined by their dog in a scene painted in grisaille. On this plate, the border of deep cobalt blue is lavishly gilded in a dramatic geometric pattern. As we see here, burnished gilt was another hallmark of Dagoty porcelains. The formal border juxtaposes the informal scene of the children at play with the geometric design. This type of contrast is typically French, and only the French made porcelains with this particular type of sophisticated contrast. Romanticism had a strong influence on the Dagoty porcelains of the last decade of the 18th century. Anecdotal scenes, indoor scenes, and scenes showing children's games replaced neoclassical subjects. The new themes were more human and had a much less rigid atmosphere. Condition: Excellent Diameter: 8 inches Price: $420 Background: The Paris retail shop was on the Boulevard Montmartre. The Dagoty factory made hard paste porcelain. The factory was in the Rue de Chevreuse, Paris, leased for nine years in 1800 by brothers Pierre-Louis (1771-1840) and Etienne-Jean-Baptiste Dagoty (1772-1800). Pierre-Louis became sole owner in 1804, and in 1807 the lease was renewed for a further nine years. The factory was under the protection of the Empress Josephine and supplied porcelain for Versailles. In 1816, Dagoty went into partnership with Edouard Honoré...

Six Piece "Mason's Ironstone" Toiletry Set, English, circa 1835
Located in Incline Village, NV
Outstanding and rare early 19th century Mason's Ironstone (6) piece set consisting of toilet necessities as follows: Large oversized highly decorated pitcher and bowl for storing water and wash basin Pair of chamber pots for evening needs Similarly decorated toothbrush holder, large enough for multiple users Soap dish with removable strainer dish The fact that this rare ensemble has survived intact with no damage for nearly two hundred years is remarkable. It would have been an item owned and cherished by the aristocracy. and enjoyed as an art form because of it's high quality manufacture, in addition to the elaborate and detailed decoration. Also of note is the 8 sided octagonal form of each of the six items (see images). Please observe the elaborate serpent or snake formed handles to the large pitcher and both of the chamber pots (see images). Also worth mentioning is the attention the interior of the bowl receives, with as much decoration applied as the exterior (see image). The interior upper perimeters of all of the items receive the same amount of attention. The pitcher and bowl combination is larger than most that were manufactured during that period, (16" diameter) made possible by the strength of the ironstone. The Mason's mark underneath the items indicates a 1830s manufacture, with the "Mason's Patent Ironstone China" above and beneath the crown in blue. The ironstone process was patented by Charles Mason...

‘The Bridegrooms Health, The Betrothal’, a Rare and Large KPM Plaque, circa 1890
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
‘The Bridegrooms Health, The Betrothal’. A rare and large KPM plaque after the painting by Otto Erdmann in a finely carved giltwood Frame. German, circa 1890. Signed to the lower right hand corner with the initials ‘TK’ for Thomas Koenig. The reverse with impressed ‘KPM’ mark beneath a sceptre to the lower right and the centre inscribed with the registered mark of the Munich porcelain painter Th. Koenig, in the form of an armorial crest with a putti supporting a banner inscribed ‘Munchen’, an artists palette and a shield bearing the initials ‘TK’. It is further inscribed with the size code ‘30. E’ . Thomas Koenig, was a renowned porcelain artist with a studio in Munich, active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The original oil painting this plaque is based on is entitled ‘The Betrothal’ or ‘Bound for Life’ and was painted in 1883, by the German painter Otto Erdmann (1834-1905). Otto Wilhelm Eduard Erdmann (born Leipzig 1834 – died Duusseldorf 1905) was a German Realist painter, heavily influenced by Impressionism and famous for his fine interior scenes with figures from the eighteenth century. Works by Erdmann are displayed in the museum of Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Leipzig. Founded in Berlin in 1750 ‘KPM’ or 'Koenigliche Porzellan-Manufaktur' acquired its name and Royal patronage when the Prussian king, Frederick the Great, purchased the manufactory in 1760. Its distinguished trademark from then on became the royal blue sceptre, which is stamped (painted prior to 1837) on every piece. All painted pieces produced by KPM are signed by the painter. The complicated and exacting process of painting on porcelain became very popular in the mid to late nineteenth century...

Large Pair of Magenta Ground Vienna Porcelain Exhibition Vases, circa 1900
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
An important and extremely large pair of Magenta Ground Vienna Porcelain Exhibition vases. Austrian, circa 1900. Each vase with blue underglazed ‘Beehive’ mark to interior of neck. Each vase is finely painted with classical scenes to the front and allegorical scenes to the back on a rich magenta ground with gilt foliate decoration. The vases are mounted by extraordinary gilt handles headed by winged female masks to the sides and grotesque masks to the shoulders. The spreading necks decorated with Greek key decoration are surmounted by domed covers and the vases are raised on baluster form supports put down on drum bases finely painted with panels stylised arabesque. The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1718 only eight years after Johann Friedrich Bottger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus had succeeded in unearthing the secret of Porcelain Manufacture for August the Strong, Elector of Saxony. On May 25, 1718, Emperor Karl VI signed a "special privilege" awarding Claudius Innocentius du Paquier the exclusive right to produce porcelain in the Austrian crown lands. Production being almost exclusively for the imperial household and the court nobility. During the rococo era, Empress Maria Theresia placed the company under imperial ownership and it was during this period that the manufactory began to produce the famous rococo genre scenes after Watteau. Under the management of Conrad Sorgel von Sorgenthal, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory achieved an international reputation for its neo-classical style. After the wars with France brought the manufactory to the brink of ruin, the Vienna Congress at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century gave porcelain from Vienna a renewed upswing. Many important personalities of the time, including Czar Alexander I of Russia...
