John Samuel Hunt, English pair of sterling silver multi-lobed covered vegetable dishes from 1850 (Victorian era) adorned with curvilinear natural motifs. They measure 12'' by 12'' by 4 3/4'' in height, weigh 97 troy ounces, and bear hallmarks as shown. The exquisite design of these pieces is such that the so-called button at the top of the covered dishes is removable. This means that these covered dishes can easily become two bowls (four in total), each beautifully adorned with natural motifs, each measuring by 12'' by 11'' by 1 1/2'' in height.
Hunt & Roskell, a firm of manufacturing and retail jewelers and silversmiths, was founded by Paul Storr in 1819, trading as Storr & Co. (1819-22), Storr & Mortimer (1822-38), Mortimer & Hunt (1838-43) and then Hunt & Roskell (1843-97). John Samuel Hunt, who had assisted Storr from the start, continued as a partner until his death in 1865, when he was succeeded by his son.
Paul Storr (1770-1844) is considered the greatest English silversmith of the Regency era, and his beautifully ornate silver reflected the rapidly changing world in which he lived. Storr's reputation rests on his mastery of the grandiose neo-Classical style developed in the Regency period. He quickly became the most prominent silversmith of the nineteenth century, producing much of the silver purchased by King George III and King George IV. This large antique Victorian sterling silver meat skewer/letter opener has a tapered form.
The surface of this skewer is embellished with a contemporary engraved initial ‘R’ below the plain circular ring loop finger piece.
The reverse surface is plain and unembellished apart from the featured hallmarks.
This fine example of antique silversmith was crafted by the renowned London female silversmith Mary Chawner.
The original use of this item was purely as a meat skewer. Due to its form, this piece may certainly be used as an effective letter opener.

Robert and William Wilson, silver platter or tray, from the mid-19th century, with a gadrooned rim and exquisitely engraved foliate motifs. It measures 17 1/2'' in length by 13 1/4'' in width by 7/8'' in height, weighs 49.8 troy ounces and bears hallmarks as shown. The dedication to Hon. N.B. Browne at the center can be related to Nathaniel Borradaile Browne, (1819-1875), a Philadelphia lawyer, businessman, and public servant. He served in both the federal and the Pennsylvania state governments, worked on the Philadelphia Centennial in Fairmount Park, and became the first president of Fidelity Trust Company. He was an Ivy League alum of the prestigious University of Pennsylvania.
Robert & William Wilson were American silversmiths in Philadelphia, active in partnership from roughly 1825–1846, then continuing as a mark until 1877. It was succeeded by William Wilson & Son.
