Located in Lisse, NL
Large size and great looking, open design, hexagonal hallway lantern. This rare and stylish Arts and Crafts lantern is all handcrafted in the earliest years of the 1900s. What makes this sizable antique extra special is the open design with the six stylized, diamond shaped and perfectly beveled glass panels. The outside is a hexagonal design, but the 'base' and 'top' of this pendant are open and decorated with flowing bronze elements that take this wonderful work of lighting art to the next level. This classy and timeless pendant with its marvelous patina can be used and enjoyed in all sorts of rooms and interiors, but to us this is the ideal entry hall or landing or stairwell pendant...

Arts & Crafts Chandelier with a Great Owl Sculpture & Perfect Alabaster Shades
Located in Lisse, NL
Unique, antique, stunning and all handcrafted 6 light chandelier. Some chances you only get once in your lifetime and that is exactly what we thought when we first saw this marvelous Arts and Crafts era pendant. The six hand carved arms are like stems of flowers growing out of the base of this chandelier and the perfect (both design and condition-wise) alabaster shades are like stylized blooming flowers. Just like the six mint arms, the monumental and mint circular 'base' too is all hand-crafted and hand carved out of soilid oak and with a stunning row of large oak beads between the top and bottom section. Together with the equally unique and also handcrafted, original 'rope-chains' they are just some of the elements that make this antique extraordinary and truly a joy to own and to look at. However, to us, it is the remarkable and mint condition, hand carved owl sculpture in the middle of this chandelier that takes it to the next level. This beautiful and meaningful bird is the international symbol for wisdom and learning and in this case it is sitting perfectly upright with its 'river pearl eyes' always alert and present. If your vocation has anything to do with gaining or spreading knowledge and if you understand and appreciate the symbolic meaning of this owl chandelier...

And you can see more objects to the style for sale. Style: Arts and Crafts The Arts and Crats movement emerged in the last decades from twentieth century, like a reaction againts the first industrial style that was developed in England. The one called Victorian Style. It is said that those who came to visit the Universal Fair in 1851, arrived to the Crystal Palace from London, and also amazed by the technical advances, were surprised by the bad taste of all that was massive manufacture. So the idea of industrial progress began to mingle with the intuition that a reaction was needed to return the objects of daily life a certain aesthetic dimension, to accompany thenatural functions for which they were manufactured. This reaction was named Art and Crafts, because it pretend to raise social dignity and aesthetics of design and applied arts of all, integrating them into a harmonious and beautiful architectural environment. From the action of Art & Crafts point of view, it experienced a major boost in 1861, when William Morris founded the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner Company, commonly known as the Morris Company. In 1890 Morris founded the Kelmscott Press...

Antique, Vintage and Contemporary Chandeliers and Pendant Lights

Chandeliers — simple in form, inspired by candelabras and originally made of wood or iron — first made an appearance in early churches. For those wealthy enough to afford them for their homes in the medieval period, a chandelier's suspended lights likely exuded imminent danger, as lit candles served as the light source for fixtures of the era. Things have thankfully changed since then, and antique and vintage chandeliers and pendant lights are popular in many interiors today.

While gas lighting during the late 18th century represented an upgrade for chandeliers — and gas lamps would long inspire Danish architect and pioneering modernist lighting designer Poul Henningsen — it would eventually be replaced with the familiar electric lighting of today.

The key difference between a pendant light and a chandelier is that a pendant incorporates only a single bulb into its design. Don’t mistake this for simplicity, however. An Art Deco–styled homage to Sputnik from Murano glass artisans Giovanni Dalla Fina (note: there is more than one lighting fixture that shares its name with the iconic mid-century-era satellite — see Gino Sarfatti’s design too), with handcrafted decorative elements supported by a chrome frame, is just one stunning example of the elaborate engineering that can be incorporated into every component of a chandelier.

Chandeliers have evolved over time, but their classic elegance has remained unchanged. Not only will the right chandelier prove impressive in a given room, but it can also offer a certain sense of practicality. These fixtures can easily illuminate an entire space, while their elevated position prevents them from creating glare or straining one’s eyes. Certain materials, like glass, can complement naturally lit settings without stealing the show. Brass, on the other hand, can introduce an alluring, warm glow. While LEDs have earned a bad reputation for their perceived harsh bluish lights and a loss of brightness over their life span, the right design choices can help harness their lighting potential and create the perfect mood. A careful approach to lighting can transform your room into a peaceful and cozy nook, ideal for napping, reading or working.

For midsize spaces, a wall light or sconce can pull the room together and get the lighting job done. Perforated steel rings underneath five bands of handspun aluminum support a rich diffusion of light within Alvar Aalto's Beehive pendant light, but if you’re looking to brighten a more modest room, perhaps a minimalist solution is what you’re after. The mid-century modern furniture designer Charlotte Perriand devised her CP-1 wall lamps in the 1960s, in which a repositioning of sheet-metal plates can redirect light as needed.

The versatility and variability of these lighting staples mean that, when it comes to finding something like the perfect chandelier, you’ll never be left hanging. From the whimsical — like the work of Beau & Bien’s Sylvie Maréchal, frequently inspired by her dreams — to the classic beauty of Paul Ferrante's fixtures, there is a style for every room. With designs for pendant lights and chandeliers across eras, colors and materials, you’ll never run out of options to explore on 1stDibs.
