French Musical Automation Picture Clock

This incredible work of art blends the beauty of a painting with the mechanical complexities of both a cylinder music box and an automaton. A clock is integrated within the arched giltwood and gesso frame, and, when activated, this painting quite literally comes alive. As the cylinder mechanism within plays its lovely tune, every character in the farrier's shop becomes animated – from the group of farrier's toiling away at the forge and anvil forming the horseshoes, to the wagging of the charming terrier's tale.
This musical automaton picture clock is attributed to Xavier Tharin of Paris who was the preeminent creator of these fantastical "moving pictures", especially this particular scene. His process mixed oil painting and hand-colored lithograph images that were layered starting from the back and into the middle and foreground to craft the complex series of movements throughout the painting.
A look inside this particular work reveals the complex mechanism (with the three gongs, pendulum and cylinder components immediately visible) which run the timepiece, the cylinder musical component, plus the multitude of moving elements in the painting -- a truly incredible feat considering the technical prowess to create just one of these devices. The story of a remarkable 19th century anatomical model created just four years after Darwin unleashed a political storm with his theories on human evolution.
The publication of Charles Darwin’s controversial On the Origin of Species in 1859 caused debates to rage about human evolution, debates which witnessed the politicisation of a creature whose existence had only recently been confirmed by modern science. On one side of the argument was the Darwinian camp; on the other were those opposed to Darwin’s theory, such as Richard Owen, the famed Director of the Natural History Museum and a man who, interestingly, coined the word ‘dinosaur’.
Tales of the creature in question had endured for centuries, but up until 1847 it remained a myth, an unknown. This all changed thanks to the missionary Thomas Savage and the anatomist Jeffries Wyman who wrote a paper for the journal of the Boston Society of Natural History in which they described a new species: Troglodytes gorilla. This important antique carved statue of Christ nailed on the cross was crafted in Lyon, France, circa 1850. Found in a private chapel in the Rhone Valley, the large antique cross features a detailed hand carved sculpture of Jesus nailed on a wooden cross with forged iron nails over his hands and feet. The painted sculpture is well-proportioned, and has realistic details throughout the body, face, and hair. The pediment has the Latin inscription INRI (in John 19:19), which in English translates to "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews", and John 19:20 states that this was written in three languages, Hebrew, Latin, and Greek during the crucifixion of Jesus. The title "King of the Jews" is only used in the New Testament by gentiles, namely by the Magi, Pontius Pilate, and the Roman soldiers. In contrast, the Jewish leaders use the designation "King of Israel". Although the phrase "King of the Jews" is used in most English translations, it has also been translated "King of the Judeans". This extremely detailed map not only depicts the mountainous regions of the southeastern U.S., but also includes names of regions, rivers, and towns.
Based on the first state of Arrowsmith’s 4-sheet map of the United States, this map is completely engraved by Tardieu in Paris and showcases high quality engravings. This detailed map of the recently independent United States includes one of the largest and earliest examples of the Ellicott plan of Washington DC.
