Mid-Century Modern Toys and Dolls

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by legendary manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

Collection '10' Banthrico and Metal Banks Western/Americana Theme. Ca. 1950's-70
By Banthrico Inc.
Located in Incline Village, NV
Banthrico, Incorporated (and similar companies) manufactured coin savings banks for banking institutions who used them as premiums to those who opened up a savings account. In the case of young children they were given to them to encourage thrift and savings. These (10) banks are a representation of that era 1950 to early 1970's, encompassing patriotic and western themes. They were always made of white metal, and typically plated; usually in a copper finish. 1) "John F. Kennedy" Bust Bank". First National Bank in Alton" (Illinois) by Banthrico circa 1963, 5 1/8" high Completely original. Beautiful example (key lock coin trap intact). Referenced #31 "Coin Banks by Banthrico" by Jim Redwine 2) "Charlie Russell...

Submarine on Base "Hunley" Still Bank, American, circa 1950
By Banthrico Inc.
Located in Incline Village, NV
This is one of the more rare and sought after still banks. Submarine on Base "Confederate Hunley" Still Bank depicts and commemorates, as stated on the facing name plate, "Sank Federal Gunboat Housatonic Feb. 17, 1864". Unfortunately, the 40 foot long "Hunley" also sank in the same battle killing it's entire crew. Only recently was it located at the bottom of Charleston harbor and raised in the year 2000. The reverse facing plate says " Citizens & Southern National Bank of South Carolina"; a bank which was established in 1887 but has since merged. Manufactured by Banthrico Inc. in Chicago, circa 1950s, this particular example is quite extraordinary in that, it is in mint condition; has the original banthrico key; comes with the original shipping box; and most significantly, it still has the elusive plunger which is missing almost all of the time. The reason being is because the plunger fits loosley in the small hole provided for it at the back of the submarine. There are no repairs of any kind. Olive colored paint is completely intact. Coins are deposited and removed via a locking coin trap underneath the base (see image). It is as if purchased from the store or acquired from the bank when opening an account. A great opportunity, to acquire for your collection, a totally complete, best condition example of this difficult to find still bank. Collectors of nautical memorabelia would also appreciate this item. Dimensions: 10" long (with plunger attached) x 2 1/4" wide x 2 3/8" high. Fits in 8 1/4" long box with plunger detached for shipping. The bank is noted as #501 page 121 in the extensive Banthrico reference book "Coin Banks" by James L. Redwine written in 2001. I am a leading specialist in the field of antique coin...
