Marvelously hand-crafted chest from the late 1600s or early 1700s.
One of the things that make antiques so appealing & attractive is the fact that most pieces were handmade in recognizable styles, with proven techniques AND with natural materials that could and would stand the test of time. The longer back in time we go, the more that seems to be the case. This amazing chest from circa 1680-1720 is clearly made in the Gothic Style with Gothic church window-like carvings. With Gothic style chests of this age being very rare, we were (and still are) very enthousiastic about finding it. Put together and strengthened with hand-forged, wrought iron brackets, nails AND with very large dovetails, the master carpenter provided the techniques that would guarantee the owner a chest that would last him (or her) a lifetime. As it turned out, his workmanship, in this case, created a chest that has already served some 15 generations. This heavy quality chest is made of solid elm and wrought iron only and the centuries of usage and natural aging have given this Gothic antique a patina that is simply heavenly. Unique and large size, antique corpus of Christ on a blackened oak cross.
If you are looking for a large crucifix with a not too overwhelming corpus of Christ for your house of prayer or for your home(chapel) then this unique ecclesiastical antique from the late 1800s could be the one. According to the former owner, this ancient bronze-color painted and sizable corpus and cross came from a monastery in Germany. The details in the anatomy of this Christ sculpture are very well carved and they clearly reveil the work of a seasoned carver / sculptor. We were also immediately impressed by the coloring, because the patina on this corpus from a little distance very much resembles the patina of antique bronze sculptures that you can find in every major market square here in Europe. We also particularly appreciate the details in the face and the position of the head of Christ. Both the angle in which He bowes His head and the details in His face are very realistic and they leave a lasting impression. We believe the artist has perfectly captured the moment in which Jesus bowed His head as He died on the cross. The ebonized oak cross is original to this corpus, but we think it was ebonized later in time, because it makes this unique and stunning sculpture stand out better. This solid oak cross has metal-strengthened openings in the back (both atop and at the bottom) via which this crucifix is safe and easy to mount. Because of the quality, the rarity, the large size, the beauty and the deeper meaning we are convinced that this antique crucifix too will find a new home soon. Whether it be in a private home, monastery or in a church, this work of religious art from the late 1800's will never fail to impress. Thanks to the pair of metal hooks on the back, safely mounting this ecclesiastical antique tight to your wall will be very easy to do.

A stunning, four-light eagle pendant for the collectors of only the rarest Black Forest antiques.
If you are a serious and lifelong collector of Black Forest antiques or even if you are the curator of a museum owning rare Black Forest pieces then the chance of you owning a large Black Forest chandelier like this still is very small. This, over three feet wide, eagle chandelier is the kind of Black Forest antique that you normally only find in books. For us to have been given the opportunity to purchase it from a German family of (former) nobles was an honor. The older lady we purchased it from had known it all her life, but she was moving to a much smaller home and she had no family members interested in antiques.
This majestic eagle with both claws is holding a perfectly hand carved branch and from each of the four side branches grows a hand crafted, blackened metal, flower lampshade. The large size of this eagle, his perfect body posture, his excellent and warm patina and the great details really make this well balanced sculpture a marvelous antique to own, to use and to look at. The way in which this fierce predator is sticking out its neck and scanning the area with its piercing eyes is something that only a true master carver is capable of creating. To us, this unique and sculptural Black Forest chandelier is the perfect center piece for a hunting lodge or for a Black Forest collector's 'treasure trove' or 'inner sanctum'. This incredibly well carved bust of Jesus is impressive both for its quality and its large size. With His head bowed down like in His final hours on the cross this design is obviously perfect for displaying on a tall stand. In this case a tall and ebonized wooden pedestal was used and thanks to the contrasting colors of this bust and its pedestal they are like a match made in heaven. The master sculptor / artist could not have done a better job in hand carving the exhausted yet serene facial expression of Christ. The large size of this bust combined with the rare sandstone material makes this work of religious art look extra ancient. Because of its size this archetype of Christianity can also be seen and worshipped from further away. Unfortunately we cannot read the name of the skilled artisan who signed this unique sculpture. Thanks to its amazing quality, its excellent condition, its deeper meaning and its powerful presence this work of religious art will never fail to impress, no matter where you decide to have it on display. For it to have come our way felt like a blessing and to be able to offer it to the 1stdibs community in this amazing condition is an honour for us.
