Early Alvar Aalto Spring Chair Model 31 in Pink and Bent Wood, Artek 1930s

About the Item

One of the most iconic and finest furniture works from Alvar Aalto, the model 31 chair (later model 42) also known as spring chair, `Pikku Paimio` or Small Paimio in english. It is regarded as an iconic masterpiece of design. This model was originally created in the 1930s for the Paimion Parantola Tuberculosis Sanatorium, and helped pave the way for Alvar Aalto´s international breakthrough with his functionalist furniture design. This chair is in good condition and with a beautiful patina. It is one of the finest and sturdiest of this model chair that we have had over the years. Not only beautiful to look at, and comfortable to sit in, but also a fine collector´s item for Aalto lovers. Although the chair is from the 1930s, the paint is not. This chair was painted in blue colour before the previous owner had it fixed into it's current condition. It also seems that the chair also had a plaque under the seat similar to those used by Finmar in the 1930s. There is a slight bent with one of the legs, nothing serious and can hardly be noticed, but we have to mention it. Refer to pictures please. Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is a world famous architect and designer. He was well known for designing his own line of furniture and lighting for the numerous buildings that he designed worldwide. His work includes architecture, furniture, textiles, glassware, sculptures and paintings. He never regarded himself as an artist, seeing painting and sculpture as branches of a tree that stem from architecture. Aalto's career from the 1920s-1970s is reflected in the styles of his work, ranging from Classicism to Modernism and to an organic style from the 1940s onwards. Aalto and his wife Aino were famous for not only designing the buildings, but the interior surfaces, furniture, lamps and even the glassware for those buildings. Aalto's furniture designs are Scandinavian Modernism at its best, especially his technical innovations on the bent plywood furniture, which in turn had a great impact on Mid-Century Modernist furniture. Aalto's works are highly sought after and some fetch record prices in auctions and the design world. Of course his works are also widely collected and can be found in numerous private collections and famous museums.

Model 31 Armchair Alvar Aalto, Finland, 1930s
By Alvar Aalto
Located in London, GB
A model 31 armchair designed by one of Finland's most prestigious Modernist designers and architects, Alvar Aalto. The model 31 was designed by Aalto during the 1930s whilst he was working alongside his wife and partner, Aino Aalto, on the Paimio Sanitorium. Aalto won the commission for the tuberculosis hospital in 1929, and over 4 years built a gesamtkunstwerk, "total work of art", dedicated to physical and mental wellness in every capacity possible. Aalto described the sanatorium itself as a "medical instrument", prioritising ventilation and heliotherapy (sun exposure), with furniture functioning a core part of this finely tuned instrument. The low seat and gently reclining form of the model 31 is indicative of the environment of restfullness which Aino and Aalto sought to construct at Paimio. Much like the eponymous "Paimio Chair", the most recognised design from the project, the model 31 shares the scroll-like expression created by the continuous seat and back. However, unlike the "Paimio Chair" the model 31 has a cantilevered construction created by the sweeping curves of the laminated birch frame, inspired by the original "Freischwinger" by Mart Stam from 1926. This particular armchair was once owned by British artist and designer, Max Clendinning, and his partner Ralph Adron...
