This antique chair-and-a-half from France, often referred to as a marquise (a wide fauteuils chair), showcases all the Louis XVI decorative vocabulary with tightly carved scrolled knuckles, beautiful accent trims, and acanthus leaf accents. Flower head medallions are carved at the knees, above the four round and fluted legs, each tapering gently towards their feet. The backrest, padded manchette armrests, and seat are all upholstered in a cream fabric (note that there is some small staining). It is standard with a boxed pullover seat. Makers Paper Lable is underneath, The Karges Furniture Co. Inc and made in the Mid-20th Century. In good vintage condition, Firm and sturdy, we recommend having it newly upholstered. About the Designer Edwin F. Karges Sr. Edwin F. Karges, Sr., born in 1896 in Evansville, Indiana, was the son of 2nd generation immigrant Albert F. Karges, founder of the Karges Furniture Co., Inc. Though his father wished him to become a businessman like himself, Edwin (or "Mr. K" to all who loved him), followed his own unique, artistic path. After graduating the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and a brief service in the post-WWI Navy, he returned to the company to help as he was able. With little inclination to the business end of things, Edwin found his joy and calling in the design of the furniture. Enamored of European design, Edwin began to guide the company toward more French, English and Italian influences in their products. Over the span of the next 65 years, this amazing talent came to fruition in the thousands of beautiful designs from the company. Influenced by his wife Evaline, one of the first women to open an interior design firm in the city and a Pioneer in her own right, and his daughter, Joan, who lived in Italy after WWII, his prolific body of work guided the company away from more American products...

Interesting and graceful oak bench; the legs, conical and elegantly fluted, are joined at the base by a well-designed and harmonious X-shaped element; the well-solid frame is carved with simple, linear, and refined motifs; the upper oval part serves as the seat is enriched with fine "Vienna straw" work. The bench was made between 1880 and 1885 in an artisan workshop near Paris certainly by a very skilled master cabinetmaker because this kind of workmanship requires a lot of experience and skill. The process of seat construction using equidistant holes and a woven plant material (drawn guinea cane) was known since Egyptian times (a stool was found in the tomb of the architect Kha dating from 1600° B.C.), but it was from the mid-19th century that it became popular worldwide. It was the Austro-Hungarian cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (father of bentwood) who in 1842 created chair No. 4 with this technique for the Daum café on Vienna's Kohlmarkt, but success came in 1859 when the Gebruder Thonet company of Michael's sons presented chair No. 14 made of curved solid wood with a straw seat...
