18th Century French Walnut Louis XV Style Fauteuil with Original Petit Point
Located in Louisville, KY
This mid 18th century French Louis XV walnut fauteuil with seemingly gloriously original upholstery portrays an exquisite petit-point that shows beautiful aging and a few minor areas that are reparable. The chair frame encompassing the padded back, arms, and serpentine-fronted seat apron are of rich walnut and are intricately hand carved revealing a floral crest in the center the top frame, flanked with stunningly done leaves that wrap the upper corners and continue down to the arms leading into the front seat apron with recessed gadroons along the way ultimately revealing a floral motif that continues on the crowns of the hipped cabriole legs that finish with a single scroll on pad bottoms. The overall wood of this chair is quite spectacular in that it seems to have the original rubbed finish which reveals the raw beauty of the wood and the patina flows beautifully into the wonderfully aged petit-point covering. This piece was part of a collection of a prominent Louisville family and spent a portion of its life in a stunning music conservatory as a piece of historic art beautifully positioned next to an antique baby grand piano.

Directoire Mahogany Bergère Attributed to Georges Jacob
Located in Kittery Point, ME
A Directoire Mahogany Bergère Attributed to Georges Jacob, its curved back and padded armrests with finely carved baluster-shaped supports raised on turned front legs and sabre back legs. With a spurious Jacob stamp to back rail. The term "Directoire" refers to a historical period following the French Revolution (1789) and preceding the First Empire when Napoleon reigned, but also to a style of furniture and decoration covering a longer period from 1789 to 1804. It is characterized by the production of furniture with simplified forms and ornaments, inspired by antique decorations. The profound social and political upheavals that marked this period had a direct impact on the production of Directoire furniture. The stripping down of furniture pieces, which had begun in the 1780s under the influence of Greek art, was accentuated during this period. The abolition of guilds by the revolutionaries also forced manufacturers in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine to simplify shapes and materials. Elegant and graceful, the furniture is generally small-scale. They retain the Louis XVI structure. The Directoire style adopts clean shapes, straight lines, simple curves, flat surfaces and right angles. Lines accentuate geometric shapes inspired by Antiquity. A typical trait is the pronounced rolled-over back, similar to a scroll illustrated in our bergere, evocative of the klismos chair. Only the more luxurious pieces of furniture use mahogany, an exotic and expensive wood. Despite his humble origins, Georges Jacob rose to become one of the most renowned menuisiers of his day. Unlike many artisans who joined their fathers or brothers in the middle-class family trade of furniture making, Jacob was from a peasant family and moved to Paris at sixteen to begin his career. He apprenticed in a joinery workshop and eventually became a master in 1765. He developed a reputation for producing inventive designs for chairs, beds, and screens carved with such motifs as twisted ribbons, guilloches, beading, and fluting. Jacob's reputation grew quickly, eventually spreading outside France; the future King George IV of England, Gustavus III of Sweden, and several German princes...

Vintage, New and Antique Bergère Chairs

Vintage, new and antique bergère chairs add a touch of history to any leisure space. This beautifully upholstered seating furniture spans centuries of style, design and fashion.

A bergère armchair exudes comfort. The best-known versions have cushioned armrests and an upholstered back (or, at the very least, a cushion for the backrest). The seat is usually home to a sumptuous loose cushion, and the exposed wooden frame, molded or decoratively carved, is quite wide and sits low to the ground. In your living room, alongside your mahogany side tables and plush sofa, this chair will embody class, exceptional design and precise craftsmanship.

Bergère armchairs are among the chairs you should know. They originated in France and date back to the late 17th and early 18th centuries. There are at least three types of bergère chairs: bergère à la reine, which features high armrests, a straight back and sides that slope down to the arms; a shorter bergère cabriolet; and the bergère marquise, which is usually smaller with a low and curved back.

Louis XV bergère chairs were deeper and broader than other chairs of the period, while versions that were made during the Louis XVI period — which is characterized by furniture designed in reaction to the florid stylings of the previous era — see the particular style of chair developed further, with the area between the elbow rests and the seat being upholstered with fabric. Over time, the bergère chair took on dramatically different forms, while maintaining the same basic features. Mid-century modern bergère chairs have a sleeker design with simple yet elegant features. Whatever your overall chosen furniture style, a bergère chair introduces a comfortable yet commanding presence to any space.
