About the Item

Introducing a rare, expansive set of rare early Model CH 23 dining chairs by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn built in Denmark in the late 1950's. The CH 23 dining chair, like many of Hans J. Wegner’s other iconic designs, is clean and simple in it's distinctive shape. Featuring newly upholstered seats in a fabulous caramel-colored, genuine Italian leather hide that perfectly offsets the solid oak frames (which have been hand-sanded and left naturally unfinished) this fully restored set offers a modern take on the classic, seminal chair design. The CH23 dining chair was one of the first chairs Hans J. Wegner designed exclusively for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950. The pieces he created at this time were not only unique but also set new standards for modern furniture design with their artistic expression and ergonomic form. Although the CH23 chair may appear uncomplicated at first glance, it incorporates many fine, sophisticated details, among them the elegant cruciform cover caps in the backrest, a double-woven seat, and arched rear legs that ensure optimal stability. (Credit: Carl Hansen & Søn) Among all furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) is considered one of the most creative, innovative, and prolific especially amongst his Scandinavian counterparts. Wegner was part of the spectacular generation that created what is today referred to as the Golden Age of modern Danish design. Wegner began his apprenticeship with Danish master cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg when he was just 14 years old. Later on, he moved to Copenhagen and attended the School of Arts and Crafts from 1936 to 1938 before setting out as a furniture designer. The core of Wegner’s legacy is his focus on showing the inner soul of furniture pieces through a simple and functional exterior. Wegner’s background as a cabinetmaker gave him a deep understanding of how to integrate exacting joinery techniques with exquisite form. His aesthetic was also based on a deep respect for wood and its characteristics, and a vast curiosity about other natural materials that enabled him to bring an organic, natural softness to formalistic minimalism which are on full display in this truly iconic CH 23 chair set. Carl Hansen opened his furniture workshop in Odense, Denmark in 1908 and soon became renowned for the exceptional quality of his work. In it's early days, the company produced bespoke furniture including everything from dining room sets to bedroom suites. As the company grew and times changed, however, it gradually began to produce smaller series of its most popular pieces. This combination of craftsmanship and rational series production soon became the firm’s hallmark and continues to set it apart to this very day. With it's fresh, hand-sewn leather upholstery, restored mix solid oak and teak frames and new straps and batting this paradigmatic Model CH 23 chair set is ready for a literal lifetime more of use. Perfect for both designers and collectors alike searching for an authentic, vintage and Danish-made set of CH-23's. With this set the devil is in the details and given it's authentic leather hide, hand-stitched seams and hand-sanded unfinished wood this set is the very epitome of "one-of-a-kind" so when it's gone, it's gone forever. Make it yours today and add a piece of design history to your collection that is as comfortable as it is unique and visually captivating.

If this style of cording does not suit your taste, please message us prior to checkout to discuss your re-cording or reupholstery options. This set of chairs is a perfect blend of form and function, making it a sophisticated addition to any dining area. Niels Otto Moller was a Danish furniture designer, known for his modern and functional designs. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and went on to work for various furniture manufacturers, including J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, where he designed the Model 80 Dining Chairs. J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik was a Danish furniture manufacturer, founded in 1944 by Jorgen Langkilde Moller. The company was known for producing high-quality furniture in the Danish Modern style, using materials such as teak and oak. The company was in operation until the late 1970s. We currently only have these six Model 77 chairs in stock and when they sell they're gone forever.
