Cane and Chrome MR10 Cantilever Chairs by Mies Van Der Rohe, Knoll 1970s reissue

About the Item

The set we have here, are from the 1977 reissue by Knoll which was in conjunction with MOMA’s exhibition Mies in New York City. 4 available The MR10 has become an iconic chair often used to illustrate the exemplary times from which it originates. Mies van der Rohe embraced the advances of industrial material production and elegantly exploited its unique characteristics. The MR series of chairs, though iconic, were not the first to employ tubular steel or even a cantilever in chair design. Marcel Breuer was the first to use tubular steel in his designs, first of all for the Bauhaus canteen at Dessau followed by the skeletal B3 / Wassily armchair. Controversially Mart Stam is said to have brought the idea of a cantilevered tubular steel chair to a meeting at the Bauhaus Werkbund in 1926 and Mies van der Rohe was so taken by the idea that he immediately jumped straight into developing his own version of the concept. First produced in 1927 by Berliner Metallgewrbe, the MR-10 was showcased at the Die Mode der Dame exhibition in Berlin and installed at Mies’s model apartments in Stuttgart. The cane version of the chair came in 1928 after the original leather-slung chairs of the previous year. They were included in the exposition at the Barcelona World's Fair of 1929 where the famous pavilion was installed. Thonet took over production in the early 1930’s and the MR chairs were the most expensive in the catalogue. The cane has been fully replaced on 2 out of the 4 chairs. the other 2 have some minor breaks and imperfections. • White Stackable Selene Chairs by Vico Magistretti for Artemide, Pair
    By Vico Magistretti
    Located in Edinburgh, Scotland
Vico Magistretti’s Selene was one of the first commercially produced chairs pressed from a single sheet of plastic. The Selene was first conceived by Magistretti in 1961 but it took several years working alongside the technicians and model makers at Artemide to produce the first production model in 1969. It was the S shaped cross section that solved the issue with lateral strength of the legs for Magistretti. “ It cannot be drawn. To draw it I’d have to have drawn at least a hundred cross sections” The Artemide chair was made from a single sheet of 3mm thick Reglar, a new glass reinforced polyester (GRW). It was first shown in white at the 1968 Triennale di Milano. Production of the Selene started in 1969 with white, red and black models shortly followed in orange in 1970. In 1984 came a new inspired pallet of yellow, light blue and pink for the aesthetically radical Los Angeles Olympics. Artemide’s production of the chair ceased in the 1990s then Heller reissued nylon and polycarbonate (colour dependant) injection moulded versions in 2002. The 1960s saw an intense period of exploration in product design with many embracing the recent advances of Industrial plastics. Verner Panton, Joe Colombo, Helmut Batzner and Sergio Mazza were amongst those who had chairs utilising modern plastics in production by the late 60s. Helmut Batzner’s chair...

By Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
    Located in London, GB
Complete set of four chrome cantilever MR10 chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in brown leather. This set of chairs is an early 1960s example of his famous design produced by Knoll International. The MR10 chair was first designed in the 1920s, and this set of four features the chrome springs on the backs and seats. Later the design was improved, with a shortening of the springs and a reversion to an elastic corset cord. The chairs still bear the oval sticker marks on the back of the bottom of the seats. MR10 chairs are really comfortable, and are a real design Classic, as seen in many films and other media. Our MR10 chairs recently have been used to decorate the interior of a restaurant in London, which was featured in Architectural Digest, Dezeen, Elle Decoration, and many other publications (as shown in the images, which are property of Child Studio...
