About

CH24 - wishbone chairs by Hans J Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1949 - iconic Danish design - two beech Y-chairs, soap-treated and fitted with new woven paper cord seats. In excellent vintage condition! The CH24 or wishbone chair is by far the most sold chair in the history of Carl Hansen & Søn, and also one of the most copied chairs of the modern era - a steam-bent solid hardwood frame with an extremely appealing organic shape and handwoven paper cord seating. This richly detailed chair demands perfect craftsmanship and an intimate knowledge of wood joinery. The steam-bent back legs curve into the armrest and are tapered to join the backrest, the characteristic 'Y' or 'Wishbone' which in turn joins the armrest with the seating. Seating is comprised of woven paper cord, made from virgin paper twisted and braided in sets of three strings, and woven in what is known as the "Envelope pattern". Inspired by portraits of Danish merchants, posing in Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs, Hans J. Wegner designed a small number of chairs, called 'China Chairs', characterized by the combined top rails / backrests and armrest fusing into a single piece. The last of these 'China chairs' is the wishbone chair, designed in 1949. It was the first chair designed for mass production (without compromising either quality or the detailed craftsmanship!) and it was the first chair Wegner designed for Danish furniture maker Carl Hansen & Søn. The chair was put into production by 1950, offered in oak and beech or as lacquered in various colors, and has been produced continuously ever since. Only few modifications has been made over the years, like adding 2 cm (0.7") to the legs to accommodate the rising average height or adding new colors to the lacquered range. Hans J Wegner has set the golden standard for Danish Furniture design in many of his designs, however the wishbone chair or CH24 commands it's very own place in Modern design history - a simple, light and appealing shape with a very strong, confident expression. It captures the essence of 1950s modern Danish design - and is still the most popular Wegner chair in the Carl Hansen & Søn product range. This pair of light, sculptural vintage wishbone chairs will fit anywhere in the home, as dining chairs, as accent chairs or just two exceptional examples of Danish furniture design at it's best! Condition: Both chairs are vintage beech versions, gently restored (deep cleaned and sanded) and finished with three soap-treatments. Fitted with new woven paper cord seats (by professional weaver!) - sourced from single owner. Both chairs are in excellent vintage condition with very few signs of usage and age. Worn Carl Hansen & Søn / Danish Furniture makers mark labels underneath one chair. Please see the photos!

About the Designer

Hans J. Wegner

Best known for his chairs and seating pieces — though a master of many furniture types like sofas and tablesHans Wegner was a prolific designer whose elegant, often ebullient, forms and devotion to the finest methods in joinery made "Danish Modern" a popular byword for stylish, well-made furniture in the mid-20th century.

Wegner considered himself a carpenter first and a furniture designer second. Like his peers Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, Wegner believed that striking aesthetics in furniture were based on a foundation of practicality: a chair must be comfortable and sturdy before it is chic.

In keeping with that tenet, several of Wegner’s best chair designs, seen in dealer listings below, have their roots in traditional seating forms. The Peacock chair (designed in 1947) is a throne-like adaptation of the Windsor chair; pieces from the China chair series (begun in 1944) as well as the 1949 Wishbone chair, with its distinctive Y-shaped back splat, are derived from 17th-century Ming seating pieces, as is the upholstered Ox chair (1960). Wegner’s comfy Papa Bear chair (1951) is an almost surreally re-scaled English wingback chair.

Wegner’s most representative piece, the Round chair (1949), gained a footnote in political history when it was used on the TV stage of the first Kennedy-Nixon debate of 1960. That chair, along with Wegner’s more bravura designs, for example the 1963 Shell chair, with its curved surfboard-shaped seat, bring a quietly sculptural presence to a room. Wegner was a designer who revered his primary material — wood — and it shows. His wood gathers patina and character with age; every Hans Wegner piece testifies to the life it has led.
