Pair of Arne Dahlén Lounge Chairs in Green Bouclé and Teak, Sweden, 1960s
Located in The Hague, NL
This rare pair of lounge chairs was designed by Arne Dahlén in the early 1960s. The model was called 'Eva' and was manufactured by his company, Dahléns Company in the Swedish town Dalum. The company was solely devoted to the production of chairs. The soft geometric angles give this chair a modern and sculptural appearance. The hexagonal shape of the seat shell makes this an interesting design from all angles.. The four tapered legs are in veneered teakwood, with brass feet. The legs marked at the top with the original manufacturer's label. The chairs have been reconditioned and newly upholstered in a moss green bouclé Manuel Canovas fabric...

2 Jerry Johnson Landes PVC Outdoor Idyllwild Lounge Chairs Green Mesh Upholstery
Located in Topeka, KS
Fun and bright pair of white PVC Idyllwild outdoor lounge chairs with Kelly green mesh upholstery and sling designed by Jerry Johnson for Landes Manufacturing Co. They are in good vintage condition. There are signs of yellowing and some scratches to the PVC due to age and outside use. The mesh upholstery has been cleaned but does still show some signs of age including fading. I like them as is but you may prefer to recover. They are priced accordingly. Please see photos. We are selling them as a pair, circa 1960s-1970s. This pair of outdoor lounge chairs is just too cool!! They are called the Idyllwild chair and designed by Jerry Johnson for Landes Manufacturing Co. circa 1968. Johnson was also involved in creating the “new” material called polyvinyl chloride, or PVC plastic which he formed into tubes and slats to produce not only the Idyllwild chair but several other bent tubular-frame designs. This pair has a Kelly-green mesh sling as well as back and seat cushions. They are adorned with white contrasting buttons. I’m going to quote an excerpt from the book California Design by Jo Lauria and Suzanne Baizerman that best describes these chairs: Johnson’s Idyllwild chair and lounge chair and ottoman revealed the versatility of the material and its rich design possibilities. The Idyllwild chair, made of interlocking PVC tubes rolled down at the edges, presented a casual and whimsical form, while the flowing, curved geometries of the tubular-framed lounge chair and ottoman gave a move elegant and elevated presence to outdoor furnishings. Each expressed a boldness that was highly regarded by the exhibition jury. These super cool outdoor chairs will be absolutely perfect on your patio, deck or porch. We are totally in love...

Antique and Vintage Lounge Chairs for Sale: Wassily Chairs, Eames Chairs and Other Celebrated Seats

While this specific seating is known to all for its comfort and familiar form, the history of how your favorite antique or vintage lounge chair came to be is slightly more ambiguous.

Although there are rare armchairs dating back as far as the 17th century, some believe that the origins of the first official “lounge chair” are tied to Hungarian modernist designer-architect Marcel Breuer. Sure, Breuer wasn’t exactly reinventing the wheel when he introduced the Wassily lounge chair in 1925, but his seat was indeed revolutionary for its integration of bent tubular steel.

Officially, a lounge chair is simply defined as a “comfortable armchair,” which allows for the shape and material of the furnishings to be extremely diverse. Whether or not chaise longues make the cut for this category is a matter of frequent debate.

The Eames lounge chair, on the other hand, has come to define somewhat of a universal perception of what a lounge chair can be. Introduced in 1956, the Eames lounger (and its partner in cozy, the ottoman) quickly became staples in television shows, prestigious office buildings and sumptuous living rooms. Venerable American mid-century modern designers Charles and Ray Eames intended for it to be the peak of luxury, which they knew meant taking furniture to the next level of style and comfort. Their chair inspired many modern interpretations of the lounge — as well as numerous copies.

On 1stDibs, find a broad range of unique lounge chairs that includes everything from antique Victorian-era seating to vintage mid-century modern lounge chairs by craftspersons such as Hans Wegner to contemporary choices from today’s innovative designers.
