Hans J. Wegner Flag Halyard Chair "Model Ge-225" for GETAMA, Denmark 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
When this iconic model was released in 1950, the unusual combination of rope, white-varnished steel and sheepskin had never been seen before in the furniture industry. It was a way for Hans Wegner to demonstrate his ability to design innovative, practical and comfortable furniture with every possible material. Unveiled in Copenhagen in 1950 at an exhibition at the Designmuseum Danmark, the design received mixed reviews. Kaare Klint famously likened it to something from a gynaecologist’s office. But from the jump, fashion people fawned. It was splashed across magazines, models posing on its tightly wound string seat. The Flaglinestol or Flag Halyard string-wrapped lounge chair quickly became a 21st-century icon. The story goes that in 1949 Wegner was at the beach, digging himself into the sand when he found the perfect lean-back position for seaside repose, which inspired him to make it in something more sturdy. This gave birth to this chair with its famous steel frame wrapped in rope commonly used for flagpoles. The ergonomic, spaceship-like form still looks innovative despite being over 70 years old. The bottom frame is made of a white-varnished steel structure with beechwood leg caps. The legs are splayed with the front ones connected by a stretcher, establishing the firm base for the body. The top-frame is made of chrome-plated steel that serves as the frame for the stretched halyard. Halyard rope, or flagpole rope, is traditionally used to raise and lower a flag on most external halyard flagpoles. The unusual combination of materials is continued by the cognac leather head pillow secured to the back. The chair is cosied up with sheepskin that - along with the headrest - softens the industrial shape of the steel. This iconic Wegner model was already presented at The Arts & Crafts Spring Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in 1950. For several decades it was manufactured by Danish brand Getama in small quantities. In the late ’80s it went out of production altogether. PP Møbler...

Kay Fisker “Canton” Woven Wicker Lounge Chair for Robert Wengler, Denmark 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
While Kay Fisker is considered a leading exponent of Danish Functionalism, his present design shows why he was also a great influence on the Danish housing culture. This model was famously brought to Denmark from China by Fisker and there manufactured by Robert Wengler. Having trained architects and designers such as Finn Juhl, Kay Fisker designed his furniture pieces with the greatest architectural precision and quality. This “Canton” is a one-of-a-kind design, with an immediately recognizable frame and wickerwork. The masterfully woven cane gives this chair an airy look, complimented by the loose, upholstered seat cushion that adds comfort and cosiness to complement the frame. From every angle, this chair is visually arresting; from the front to the sides and back, the curves and geometric lines provide plenty of visual interest. This chair has a distinct designer edge, with clear signs of a skilled architect. The straight lines are mainly in service of the structural stability, while the and the lower panel in the front are the creation of an equally skilled designer. The back is especially creative, as it flows down to form the armrests and then further down to the legs, creating balance between the curved and straight lines. Fisker, like many of his Danish contemporaries was highly skilled both as an architect and as a furniture designer, and the “Canton” is perhaps the best evidence of that. The manufacturer, Robert Wengler was a German craftsman who specialized in wicker furniture, and was appointed as a wicker maker to the Danish Crown in 1914. He was a Pioneer in working with rattan in the early 20th century and became the most skilful wicker-maker in Denmark. This chair is marked by his brand, R. Wengler. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some discoloration and marks of restoration on the cane. Dimensions: 33.46 in W x 37.59 in D x 38.18 in H; Seat height 18.5 in 85 cm W x 95.5 cm D x 97 cm H; Seat height 47 cm About the Designer: Kay Otto Fisker (born 14 February 1893 in Frederiksberg, died 21 June 1965) was a Danish architect and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was an exponent of a nationally shaped version of international functionalism. Fisker graduated from school in 1909 and attended the Academy of Fine Arts' School of Architecture from 1909 to 1920, when he graduated as an architect. During his studies he was employed at Anton Rosen's architect's office from 1912, in Stockholm with Sigurd Lewerentz and Gunnar Asplund in 1916 and with Hack Kampmann in Copenhagen from 1918. In 1915, in collaboration with Aage Rafn...

Scandinavian Easy Chairs in Sheepskin with Ottomans, Scandinavia, Ca 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This pair of easy chairs exudes quality and personality from all angles. The basic Scandinavian furniture design principles are all present, with a functional, simple base at the core that is free of unnecessary ornamentation, aided by high-quality materials and execution. Additionally, the bodies covered in soft and stylish sheepskin provide plenty of visual pleasure. With organic forms and harmonious proportions, these easy chairs are excellent examples of the great Scandinavian design from the era. Designed in the design phase that we know today as mid-century modern, this pair has a classic shape, paired with modern design. The generous seats and backs are welcoming, with the latter curving in such an angle that the sitter is gently “hugged”. The large, curved backrests feature tufted buttons that sink into the lush fabric accentuating its texture. The backs follow the curve of the equally generous seats, creating a harmonious look. The backside of the design is quite striking, as it is created from a single piece stemming from the base. The sheepskin used...

Guglielmo Ulrich Italian Modern Lounge Chairs, Italy, 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
The Italian architect, painter and furniture designer, Guglielmo Ulrich, descended from a noble family with Danish origins. He quickly became a very influential figure in modern Italian design and his models are real delicacies today. As this pair of 1950s lounge chairs show, Ulrich’s work is elegant and rich in detail. Although his work does not quite conform with the strict norms of simplicity of the time, it fits the prevalent aesthetics of Modernism. In the case of these chairs, the fully upholstered bodies show the general mid-century modern characteristics with an ergonomic and functional design. The seats are slightly raised, and the backs tilted, creating an angle that supports the sitter and the lounging experience. The wooden arms transcending to form the back legs however, truly stand out. The sharp curvature of the armrests and front legs define the look and create an interesting effect, as if the upholstered seats and backs were connected to them without joinery. The carved, dark wood and soft upholstery make them even more pronounced. There are more, subtler features to these chairs, including the wider armrests and the curved backrests, both in service of comfortable lounging. Thanks to the quality of his furnishings, that Ulrich designed and made personally, he became the trusted architects of many upper-class Milanese families. He participates in the furnishing of the most prestigious Italian ships: Cristoforo Colombo, Raffaello, etc. “A nobleman of yesteryear, with sudden jokes and twists, such as a pipe with an egg in his mouth and a very concrete sense of doing” is how he was often described. This pair of chairs is much like this description with a playful, elegant design completed by quality materials and craftsmanship. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair has been reupholstered recently in a premium fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Dimensions: 24.4 in W x 31.69 in D x 31.49 in H; Seat height 14.17 in; Arm height 23.42 in 62 cm W x 80.5 cm D x 80 cm H; Seat height 36 cm; Arm height 59.5 cm About the designer: Guglielmo Ulrich (born 1904, Milan–died 1977...
