Large English Chippendale Gainsborough Armchair, mid-18th Century
By Wright & Elwick
Located in Richmond, London
A very fine George III period Gainsborough armchair of superb quality and large scale, attributable to Wright and Elwick. English, circa 1760. Why we like it We love the imposing scale of this iconic design from the mid-18th century, superbly handcrafted and beautifully reupholstered in a luxurious Claremont silk damask. Provenance With a pre-1903 label underneath reading GEO TROLLOPE & SONS / BELGRAVE SQUARE, / LONDON, S.W.  Attribution This armchair relates to 'French Chair' designs in the George II picturesque manner illustrated in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, London, 1754. The pattern relates closely to a suite of five library armchairs from Swinton in Yorkshire and now attributed to the Yorkshire cabinet-makers, Wright and Elwick, who were known to have worked for William Danby at Swinton in around 1775, and who were both subscribers to the first edition of the Director. The suite was sold by the Earl of Swinton and the Hon. Nicholas Cunliffe-Lister, from Swinton House, Masham, Yorkshire, in Christie's house sale, 20-21 October 1975, lot 17.  Wright and Elwick Established in 1747 by Richard Wright and Edward Elwick, this prolific partnership '[had] the honour to serve most of the Nobility & Gentry in the West and North Rideing' (G. Beard and C. Gilbert, eds., Dictionary of English Furniture-Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp. 1006-1008). Certainly, records indicate that they received patronage from such distinguished clients as Sir Rowland Winn at Nostell Priory, the Duke of Norfolk at Worksop Manor, Viscount Irwin at Temple Newsam House, John Spencer at Cannon Hall and most notably, the Marquess of Rockingham at Wentworth Woodhouse.  A pair of virtually identical armchairs is in the collestion of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. An identical armchair was sold Christie's, London, Ronald Phillips Ltd - Making Room, 2 July 2014, Lot 69. The design also corresponds to a chair in the collection at Southill, Bedfordshire (P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, London, rev. ed., 1954, vol. I, p. 277, fig. 160). A pair of armchairs of this form was sold Christie’s New York, 19 October 2000, lot 100 ($182,000); a single chair of virtually identical form was sold Christie's London, 15 April 1999, lot 65; a further related pair was sold Sotheby's London, 5 July 1997, lot 58. George Trollope & Sons - Retailers The  firm, established in 1820 as 'paper hangers...

George 111 Mahogany Chippendale Dining Chair Reupholstered, Circa 1760
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a superb hardwood walnut or mahogany, Chippendale back, side or dining chair which we date to the mid 18th century, George 111rd period, circa 1760. The chair has a very well carved "Chippendale" back splat consisting of vertical interconnected ribbons with good detail. The top rail has a serpentine crest with central crisply carved detail with an acorn motif and well formed & carved ears with rosettes. The pegged and jointed legs are square with an inside chamfer back and front and the front legs are flute molded to match the side rails, with dovetailed "H" cross-stretchers. It has a drop-in seat which has been newly upholstered and webbed but could easily be upholstered in a fabric of choice. The proportion of this chair is excellent with very good width and a good rake to the backs and rear legs. The hardwood has developed a beautiful mellow colour and patina with age and polishing over the years. Overall a fine quality, English Georgian dining chair.

Circa 1750, English Georgian ii Period Mahogany Armchair with Modern Fabric
Located in Chicago, IL
Circa 1750 English Georgian II period mahogany armchair. The George II period was most noted for its intricate chairs. Like the other Georgian periods, this one was named after the monarch during the time. Under George II, mahogany became the predominant wood used for fine furniture. Many of the styles were symmetrical and had architectural curves, inspired by the Gothic. These works were very expensive and only the rich could afford and buy them. This specific armchair has a frame entirely carved from mahogany, which was a strong and durable wood that was also naturally water resistant and offers natural resistance against pests. The back of the chair has a splat design. Splats were an important element of eighteenth-century English chairs, offering support. It originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs...

18th Century, Pair of Italian Rococò Carved Giltwood Benches
Located in IT
18th Century, pair of Italian Rococo carved giltwood benches. This elegant pair of two-seater benches was built in the second half of the 18th century in Rome, Italy. The structure, in richly carved and gilded wood, has the characteristics of the Baroque period. The band under the seat has a mixed profile and is carved with rocaille motifs and rich floral decoration in relief in the central part. The four legs, curved and moved, have on the uprights the same carvings and in the terminal part of the foot emerges a scroll. The rear uprights, carved with curled end, are higher than the seat, in order to slender the image of the benches vertically. The seat is lined with velvet from a later period. These benches can be exhibited in pairs or individually in entrances or corridors, in living rooms and studios or in a room at the foot of the bed. They can also be placed below large paintings. Very decorative, bright and graceful, they are suitable both in contexts characterized by antique and modern furniture.

18th Century English George III Period Mahogany Armchair with Modern Fabric
Located in Chicago, IL
This is a finely carved 1760 English George III armchair. The George III period was named after the English monarch of the time. It was popular among the elite and mercantile class of people, due to its excellent material and intricate carvings. Due to the multiple King Georges, each George developed its own look. The George III period is also referred to as the Chippendale style. This period was often characterized by drawing on both the Rococo and Gothic styles. Pieces sported curves, arches, Chinese influences, and cabriole legs. This chair has been entirely carved out of mahogany; a premiere wood choice known for its durability, longevity, and rich coloring. The back has an elegant splat, a principal element of eighteenth-century English chairs. Splats are the center support for a chair’s open back and originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs...
