About the Item

Alvar Aalto chair 611 in birch and leather hide by Finnish manufacturer: Huonekalu-Ja Rakennustyötedas Oy. Dated in pencil 20th June 1950, along with cabinet maker's signature. A variant leather seated chair like this one is in the collection of the Sainsbury Centre in Norwich. This was one of Aalto's (1898-1976) first designs (1929). The chair was also in close cooperation with the manufacturer Otto Korhonen (1884-1935). Korhonen founded the manufacturing company Hounekalutehdas Korhonen Oy in Turku 1910. From the late 1920’s, Korhonen worked together with Alvar Aalto on the creation of laminated wood furniture for the Paimio Sanatorium. The chair has the original patina, with the birch being waxed, showing marks and loss to the finish in places. The leather has some signs of use as expected, with scuffs, marks and minor losses. The top of the left hand side front leg has some hairlines, these are solid. It looks like this has been glued at some point in the past. The chair as a whole is sturdy and very usable. Two pins remain where the import Finmar Ltd celluloid label would have been attached. The pencil date and signature is a nice touch. Additional dimensions information: The seat height is 45cm. Delivery included to mainland England, Wales and Southern Scotland.

A superb Glasgow School Arts And Crafts oak armchair. After a design by George Walton for Liberty & Co. Circa 1895. The chair is almost identical to the George Walton design, but has a variant shaped top to the back. Literature: Daryl Bennett, 'Liberty Furniture 1875-1915'.4 Art Furniture, Page 131, plate 4.91. Sketch illustration of George Walton design. Please see photographs. The seating retains the original webbing and filling and has been padded and re-covered with brown leather and copperised studs. The studs are set how they were originally on the chair. Please refer to the last photograph showing the frame before re-upholstery. They have been slightly aged. The oak has the original patina, which has been waxed. There are some marks around the frame with an indentation to note to the top of one arm. The edges to the legs are knocked with use. The chair has a flattened curved arm with an elongated tapering back. The Abingwood design was considered some of the most distinctive of Walton's designs, strongly influenced by C R Mackintosh...
