Fredrik Kayser, Kamin sofa in sheepskin and teak, Norway 1950s

About the Item

Designed in 1946 by Norwegian designers Adolf Relling & Fredrik Kayser, this “Kaminstol” (or "Fireplace chair/sofa") is a distinct early Norwegian modern design. Besides the unique look, this sofa's manufacturer is also noteworthy as many of the Norwegian classic furniture pieces from the 1950s and 60s first saw the light of day at the factory Arnestad bruk. The fireplace sofa as an expression refers to all kinds of seating placed in front of a fireplace, connected by a single shared characteristic: their comfort. With this piece, comfort refers to both the ergonomic and visual aspect. The frame in solid teak timber is crafted to perfection, showcasing the exciting angles and forms predominantly on the armrests. The sofa omits a cosy and welcoming appearance which is a result of the smoothed edges of the arms and legs. Both Relling and Kayser were of great importance for the functionalist furniture style in combination with traditional quality in terms of craftsmanship. The backrest is supported by the tapered legs that transcend into the wide back. For optimal relaxation, the armrests are widened in the middle with a concave angle to support the sitter’s arms. The elegant lambswool upholstery goes very well with the Ash frame's texture and colour, accentuating the elegant design. With a tremendous sense of proportion, this sculpted sofa is very comfortable and fulfil its task to provide warmth and comfort, not to mention; last for a lifetime. Kayser and Relling both became some of Norway’s most respected designers during the heyday of Scandinavian Design thanks to their sense of integrating form and function. This chair was manufactured by Møbelfabrikken Arnestad bruk AS, established in Vollen in 1941. Condition: In excellent restored vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some minor marks and scratches on the wood. The chair have been reupholstered recently in premium lambswool. Shipping: This sofa will be packed and shipped with the greatest care to make sure you will receive the item in pristine condition.

    By Peter Opsvik

Cylindra chairs and stool in pine designed by Peter Opsvik. Although barrel manufacturing enjoys a long tradition in Norway, barrels for storing herrings have been made obsolete by plastic containers and freezers. In 1984, a small company that manufactures barrels asked Peter Opsvik to look at the possibility of developing furniture using their know-how as barrel manufacturers. Opsvik chose to abandon the barrel form, and proposed gluing staves into straight cylinders of various dimensions, and these wooden cylinders made it possible for him to express form more freely than he had been able to with earlier...
