George Nelson for Herman Miller Living Room Set

About the Item

George Nelson for Herman Miller living room set, United States, 1960s. This fine living room set consisting of two sofas and a side table is designed by the renowned American furniture designer George Nelson. This sleek design is characterized by a solid construction based on sharp lines and geometric shapes that are noticeable in the body of the seats and the frame, underlining the clear structured design. The metal legs elevate the seat up in a graceful way, creating an open and more transparent look to the whole unit. George Nelson (1908-1986) was an architect, writer, lecturer and designer who was one of the first to pick up Industrial Design in the United States. Nelson fundamentally questioned the basis of furniture business. After initial reluctance Nelson came to work as a designer and director at Herman Miller in 1944. Here, Nelson rejected the purely market-oriented type of business model that was predominant in the furniture sector and plead only to make furniture of which he was completely convinced: the rest would follow. In his first year at Miller, he produced 77 designs. Nelson believed furthermore that the industrial designer brought together all the arts. His designs are recognized by open shapes, clean lines and modest forms. The dimensions listed are of the large sofa. Small sofa dimensions : Height 69 cm Depth 76 cm Width 190 cm Seat Height: 38 cm.

George Nelson Set of Two Armchairs in Red Fabric by Herman Miller 1960s
By Herman Miller, George Nelson
Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
Set of two armchairs with structure in wood and padded fabric (dark red shade) and legs in chromed metal. Designed by George Nelson and manufactured by Herman Miller during the 1960s. Literature: Rivista dell’arredamento, n. 53, may 1959, p.33. George Nelson, born 1908 in Hartford, Connecticut (USA), studied architecture at Yale University. A fellowship enabled him to study at the American Academy in Rome from 1932 to 1934. In Europe, he became acquainted with the major architectural works and leading protagonists of modernism. In 1935, Nelson joined the editorial staff of the 'Architectural Forum', where he was employed until 1944. A programmatic article on residential building and furniture design, published by Nelson in a 1944 issue of the journal, attracted the attention of D.J. DePree, head of the furniture company Herman Miller, Inc. A short time later, George Nelson took on the position of Design Director at Herman Miller. Remaining there until 1972, he became a key figure of American design; in addition to creating furnishings for the home and office, Nelson also convinced the likes of Charles & Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Girard to work for Herman Miller. In 1957, Vitra founder Willi Fehlbaum signed his first licence agreement with Herman Miller to produce furniture for the European market. During the ensuing decades of the collaboration with Vitra, a close friendship evolved between George Nelson and Rolf Fehlbaum, who later said about Nelson: 'No other prominent designer spoke as intelligently or wrote as coherently about design'. Nelson expressed his thoughts on design topics in numerous articles and eleven books; his seminal treatise 'How to See' was recently reissued in a new edition by Phaidon. Along with his position as Design Director at Herman Miller, Nelson opened his own design office in 1947, George Nelson Associates, Inc., working together with such outstanding employees as Irving Harper, Ernest Farmer...
