Beachcomber Counter Stool in Walnut
By Greg Mitchell
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Light and strong, the Beachcomber Counter Stool evokes the sight of an old wooden single hull; it's lean, sturdy mast together with the rigging worthy of the high seas. Constructed of hand shaped legs and stretchers, each piece is carefully fit and pinned with hardwood pegs and wedges to last for generations, much like the sea craft that inspire them. For every bar stool, we start with scrupulously chosen lumber; each board must consist of straight grain and have absolutely no defects. This is not just for aesthetics, the clear grain gives the stool its strength. The boards are then milled to dimension and shaped by hand using a combination of machines and time honored hand tools. They are then given a polish by taking thin shavings with well sharpened planes and spokeshaves; rarely is sandpaper used in our shop. Once assembled, the Beachcomber bar stool...

This is the process at the core of the Tab.u Collection, stools and tables with absolutely distinctive lines. The low Tab.u stool, the firstborn in the family, is a really versatile object. It is perfect in any environment and for all uses: around the table for an unexpected guest, in the bathroom to rest objects or towels, in the living room when there is no more room on the sofa or in the bedroom instead of the usual bedside table. Its elder brother, Big Tab.u is a traditional tall bar stool. It is stunning around a counter or a kitchen island, both at home or in the most glamorous clubs. The family is complete with the addition of the Tab.u Mirror and the Tab.u Lamp...

Mike Hexagonal Stool or Side Table in Reclaimed Oak with Butterfly Wingnuts
Located in Fiesole, Florence
Mike was born out of a geometrical game of combining rhombi. 12 wooden elements with rhombus-shaped tops are assembled with handmade brass butterfly wing bolts to form a stool or side table. Two, three or even more pieces, with their hexagonal top and star-shaped base, can be united to form a coffee table or bench. Handmade by master craftsmen in Tuscany, Italy. The 12 elements are screwed together instead of glued so the rhombi are perceived as individual parts. The oakwood is reclaimed from old Italian wine barrels...

Clear Acrylic 'Stooble' (Stool x End Table), Multipurpose Sub-Surface Terrarium
Located in Brooklyn, NY
'The Stooble' is cross between a stool and a side table that is both functionally and aesthetically flexible. Like the other members of our 'Bond Series', the completely transparent acrylic Stooble is defined by the trough nestled underneath its surface. The trough enables you to curate your own sub-seat terrarium, or to display your own accents, oddities, and other objects of intrigue. Its transparent nature allows the piece to house accents that compliment its surrounding environment while also creating a sense of space. This aesthetic flexibility allows the table to synergize perfectly with almost any design project. To accommodate the more practical sitter who would prefer to use the piece's surface as a seat, we added an angled acrylic panel beneath the trough to serve as a conveniently-placed footrest. The 'Bond Series' is a line of acrylic furniture...

The Original Swing-Out Seat with Unfinished Alder
Located in Oakville, CT
Redolent of the cafeteria tables found in early-20th-century schools and factories, The Get Back Original Swing-Out Seat is our hallmark product—proudly sand cast and made in America with premium ductile iron. This versatile heritage piece lies at the heart of the industrial-modern aesthetic of American furniture. Build these distinctive wall-mounted stools into your vision for a man-cave bar or kitchen-island. Designers have found they are the perfect alternative-seating solution for their commercial projects like beer gardens, communal-dining restaurants, and coffeehouse cafes. The 12” diameter alder wood seat is left raw for you to finish to your taste, or ipe is available and recommended for outdoor installations. The cast-iron assembly is painted satin black. Our rule of thumb for spacing is “one seat every two feet.” Stress tested in excess of 1,000 pounds. Seat depth measures 12 1/2" when pushed in, 26" when swung out. Width including seat and bracket measures 24". Height from bottom of mounting plate to top of seat measures 10 3/4". Spec sheet and Base plate mounting scan available upon request. Antique, New and Vintage Stools

Stools are versatile and a necessary addition to any living room, kitchen area or elsewhere in your home. A sofa or reliable lounge chair might nab all the credit, comfort-wise, but don’t discount the roles that good antique, new and vintage stools can play.

“Stools are jewels and statements in a space, and they can also be investment pieces,” says New York City designer Amy Lau, who adds that these seats provide an excellent choice for setting an interior’s general tone.

Stools, which are among the oldest forms of wooden furnishings, may also serve as decorative pieces, even if we’re talking about a stool that is far less sculptural than the gracefully curving molded plywood shells that make up Sōri Yanagi’s provocative Butterfly stool

Fawn Galli, a New York interior designer, uses her stools in the same way you would use a throw pillow. “I normally buy several styles and move them around the home where needed,” she says.

Stools are smaller pieces of seating as compared to armchairs or dining chairs and can add depth as well as functionality to a space that you’ve set aside for entertaining. For a splash of color, consider the Stool 60, a pioneering work of bentwood by Finnish architect and furniture maker Alvar Aalto. It’s manufactured by Artek and comes in a variety of colored seats and finishes.

Barstools that date back to the 1970s are now more ubiquitous in kitchens. Vintage barstools have seen renewed interest, be they a meld of chrome and leather or transparent plastic, such as the Lucite and stainless-steel counter stool variety from Indiana-born furniture designer Charles Hollis Jones, who is renowned for his acrylic works. A cluster of barstools — perhaps a set of four brushed-aluminum counter stools by Emeco or Tubby Tube stools by Faye Toogood — can encourage merriment in the kitchen. If you’ve got the room for family and friends to congregate and enjoy cocktails where the cooking is done, consider matching your stools with a tall table.

Whether you need counter stools, drafting stools or another kind, explore an extensive range of antique, new and vintage stools on 1stDibs.
