About the Item

Set of 2 early Alvar Aalto stools in bentwood for Artek, Finland 1950s. The stools have a nice matched patina. Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was a Finnish architect, designer, and urban planner who is widely regarded as one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Aalto's work was characterized by a modernist style that emphasized functionality and simplicity, while also incorporating elements of traditional Finnish design and craftsmanship. Aalto was also a prolific furniture designer, creating iconic pieces such as the Paimio Chair, the Savoy Vase, and the Alvar Aalto stool. In addition to his work as an architect and designer, Aalto was also involved in urban planning and environmental design. He believed in creating human-scale cities that emphasized the well-being of their inhabitants, and he worked to promote sustainable design and the use of natural materials. Aalto's legacy continues to influence contemporary design and architecture, and his work has been celebrated with numerous awards and honors, including the AIA Gold Medal, the Royal Gold Medal, and the Pritzker Prize.
