About the Item

George Nelson for Herman Miller, modular wall unit model 'CSS', walnut, aluminium, glass, United States, 1959 Herman Miller introduced George Nelson’s Comprehensive Storage System (CSS) in 1959 and produced it until 1973. The unit's key aspects are its space efficiency and modularity; The CSS was designed to maximize storage within a given space, while a variety of interchangeable components can be arranged and rearranged according to the user’s needs. The system consists of ... wall-mounted uprights with modular units that include shelves and various storage compartments. The clean, minimalist design of the CSS is in line with the Modernist aesthetic principles of the mid-20th century, emphasizing simplicity, functionality, and the honest use of materials. The CSS is conceived as a highly adaptable, modular storage solution suitable for both residential and office environments. George Nelson (1908-1986) was a multifaceted professional, encompassing roles as an architect, writer, lecturer, and designer. He emerged as a pioneering figure in the adoption of industrial design in the United States. Nelson critically examined and challenged the foundational principles of the furniture industry. Despite initial hesitation, he assumed the position of designer and director at Herman Miller in 1944. During his tenure at Herman Miller, Nelson eschewed the dominant market-driven business model that characterized the furniture sector. Instead, he advocated for the production of furniture that met his rigorous standards of design integrity, positing that commercial success would naturally ensue from genuine quality. In his inaugural year at Herman Miller, Nelson generated an impressive 77 designs. He further posited that industrial design served as a confluence of all artistic disciplines. His design ethos is epitomized by the use of open shapes, clean lines, and understated forms. Please note that the piece is in good, used condition, exhibiting signs of wear consistent with its age and usage.
