Chinoiserie Furniture

CHINOISERIE STYLE

Emerging in the 17th century, chinoiserie appropriated the aesthetics and imagery of popular East Asian design for European-made versions. Reflecting the exoticization of China, Japan and other countries in this era, the word directly translates from French to “Chinese-esque,” which reveals its shortcomings as a style of furniture and decor that often stereotypically and reductively mimics Asian culture rather than showcasing and paying tribute to its artistic traditions.

The enthusiastically decorative chinoiserie style was propelled by influential tastemakers including French King Louis XIV, whose Trianon de Porcelaine in 1670 was inspired by Chinese architecture. Expanded trade between the East and West led to a demand for porcelain, lacquer objects, silk and other goods, which further informed the fanciful furniture being crafted in Europe.

Artisans working in the chinoiserie style used materials and elements like pagoda shapes, bamboo, lacquer surfaces, bird and flower motifs and other interpretations of Asian design on pieces that were frequently set against vibrant wallcoverings. This whimsical approach yielded chinoiserie furniture that boasted dramatic flourishes drawing on the natural world and reflected the dominance of Rococo during the 18th century.

As chinoiserie was shaped by approximations of Asian design by European creators, it had regional variations, such as Chinese Chippendale in England where cabinets, chairs and tea tables had wooden fretwork designs and “japanned” surfaces intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia. In North America, furniture makers in Boston and New York integrated chinoiserie-painted scenes into Queen Anne furniture.

Antique chinoiserie furniture has continued to be fashionable, from its popularity with decorators of the Hollywood Regency era — James Mont, Tommi Parzinger, William Haines and Samuel Marx favored the style — to contemporary interior designers, although it brings with it a complex history.

Paired Chinese Vases Cloisonne, 1960s
Located in Bastogne, BE
Cloisonne is a technique for creating cloisonné enamel on metal objects. The name of the technique appeared in France and comes from the word "cloisonné" (cloisonne), which translates as "separated by a partition." The process of making cloisonne enamels is very laborious. To begin with, a metal base is prepared, which is ground. Then gold and silver wire or thin plates are soldered onto it, and the resulting recesses are filled with special colored vitreous enamel and fired in a kiln. After the product has cooled, it is polished to give shine. Gorgeous black vases with floral print made in the Cloisone technique in the first half of the 20th century. They will not leave anyone indifferent. Handmade antique vases will serve as an excellent gift for a connoisseur of art. Antique Couple...

Antique Indigo Chinese Peking Carpet with Traditional Qing Dynasty Style
Located in Dallas, TX
77439 Rare Antique Chinese Peking Rug, 11'10 x 18'09.Woven at the intersection of imperial artistry and contemplative serenity, this exquisite hand-knotted wool antique Chinese Peking rug stands as a paragon of Eastern refinement. Originating in the early 20th century, it embodies a rarefied synthesis of philosophical symbolism and luxurious craftsmanship. At its tranquil center lies a softly rounded medallion, where stylized florals, leafy arabesques, and a signature butterfly—emblem of transformation and ephemeral beauty—converge in poetic harmony. This exclusive medallion, suspended within a whispering field of open space, evokes the aesthetics of Chinese landscape painting, where the power of negative space invites stillness, introspection, and elevated taste. Surrounding this exquisite work of art is a lyrical constellation of traditional and iconic Chinese symbols, each rendered with masterful restraint. Floating birds and clustered ducks suggest fidelity and conjugal bliss, while flowering sprays and ruyi-shaped clouds drift across the woolen canvas, their auspicious forms bestowing heavenly favor. The inclusion of bamboo, a revered emblem of strength and integrity, pairs gracefully with the presence of vases—archetypes of peace, wisdom, and the cultivated life. Together, these enigmatic motifs unfold like an allegorical scroll, revealing a world where nature and the spirit exist in perfect balance. It is not merely a rug, but a visual philosophy woven for the enlightened collector. The exceptional border, a sublime composition in its own right, amplifies the rug’s story of continuous flow and cultivated abundance. Angular blossoms bloom rhythmically within a sea of stylized waves—symbols of the eternal Dao and the generative forces of life. Amid this tide of floral movement, delicate cartouches hold miniature vessels and planters, offering a quiet ode to the scholar’s garden, where order and beauty serve the mind as much as the senses. Each element is hand-knotted with patience and precision, the celestial palette of ivory, soft blues, faded rose, and subtle caramel browns forming a chromatic symphony that whispers rather than shouts—an expression of luxury meant for the discerning few. To acquire this antique Chinese Peking rug is to possess a woven meditation on harmony, resilience, and the sublime. As rare as it is refined, it speaks to an elite sensibility—one attuned not merely to wealth, but to meaning, history, and cultural stewardship. In a world increasingly enamored with the ephemeral, this precious masterpiece offers permanence rooted in symbolism and craftsmanship. It is a legacy piece, a curated fragment of Chinese aesthetic philosophy that transforms any room into a sanctuary of elegance and elevated thought. This is not just décor; it is a cultural heirloom, imbued with the power to enchant, enlighten, and endure. Rendered in variegated shades of royal blue, true blue, indigo...
